30 Days Engineering Prince - Bill Jackson on "She's Always In My Hair" & "The Glamorous Life"

At Sunset Sound in the early 1980s, longtime Prince engineer Peggy "Mac" McCreary was ill, so in stepped runner and asst. engineer at the time Bill Jackson. Being thrown into a room with no one else with the greatest artist ever was more than nerve wracking. Bill sits back down in studio 3 with famed photographer Mathieu Bitton & Roundtable host Drew Dempsey after 40 years to discuss the unforgettable work he did with Prince including "She's Always In My Hair", "The Glamorous Life" and Much More.

Great interview. Could it be that mr. Jackson was interviewed for the Duane Tudahl PR era book? Some of the stories sound familiar, like that of the harp lady.
.
Nice to hear about P scaring Stevie Nicks in the toilet (-:
.
Not so nice to hear that the Toto guys made fun of him. Typical behaviour of the white rock elite (think of rrhof concert for Harrison)...

It's funny how the Sunset Sound guy asks re: Glamorous Life if ____ had anything to do with it/was she there when it was recorded etc. but they kinda blur out the name.

.

.

In the comments they say it's Apollonia and the subtitles say "ero" so maybe he said Patty/Apollonia Kotero, which is funny cuz she was in another Sunset video claming she wrote Glam Life (yeah right!!!) and now he's throwing shade at her! (which she deserves!) smile

Just imagine, all of a sudden someone calls Bill up and says and says Prince is on his way to the studio. It was actually Bill's day off (a sunday). So he's called at 8 o'clock, rushing over to the studio, having only one mic set up, the usual thing for Prince alone.

In walks Prince with a 15 piece band rushing things to jam, and Sheila walks in and puts up her drums and etc and they all start jamming. Bill didn't had much time to grab mics and do al the set ups.

Prince even didn't mind, and just said 'recording'.

They start jamming, including Wendy Lisa Sheila Jonathan Mevoin David Coleman... etc.

A +20 min jam ended up becomming the basics for 'Around The World In A day'... waw.

Bill luckily put in a cassette, and recorded it, still has it a home he said.

-

And the fact that Bill is one of the only people behind the console who ever had the chance to see Prince recording his vocals in the studio, holding his lyrics in his hands ...

Super waw.

But what an asshole Prince appeared to be... i mean just 'one word' communicaton?

I would beat the shit out of him. So unbelievably impolite. Little purple prick. lol

Great to hear all these stories.

Thanxxx so much.

Also love the story of how he freaked the shit out of Stevie Nicks on the toilet.

LOL

Also Mathieu Bitton is a great story teller too... he should do a coupel on his own.

(Need to find out more about this guy...)
