Regarding the Prince's ego component of this discussion, let's for the sake of argument assume the reports are accurate about Prince's egotistical actions in this episode. Try to imagine yourself as Prince in this situation: You've been worshipped by millions around the world for years, stunningly demonstrated your immense talents on numerous instruments in front of untold thousands, recorded many of the finest pieces of music of the 20th century, women throw themselves at you at any opportunity, and yes you still have some of the natural arrogance of youth as many of us had.

.

Think of how even one compliment can go to your head - it's hard to fathom how all this didn't profoundly warp Prince's very human brain far more than it actually did. There's no way, even with the greatest restraint in the world, that wouldn't impact you. And when I hear from head-screwed-on bandmates like Morris Hayes that Prince in his latter years was able to let go of much of that rock god ego, I find that very impressive.

.

It's silly to ever judge someone about a situation when you weren't there and can never know the whole story but if Prince was ever less egotistical than the total ego pricks that most of us would have been in his position, he deserves great credit for that. From all the stories I've read, it seems that on many occasions he was indeed far less egotistical than many of us would have been and indeed often displayed humility and generosity toward others.

.

Then again, I never met Prince, I never knew him, so being at all sure in making any kind of conclusion is foolish. I just continue to immensely enjoy the vast ocean of gifts he left behind.

I'm wondering if this has to do so much with ego. Prince admired Kate Bush, and it is likely that he worked on this particular song with best intentions and from the particular artistic perspective that guided him during that period. We all know that in the late 80s and early 90s, his music got more based on loops, beds of ambient synths and a heavy production style. His contributions to this Kate Bush song fit into that style. Whether or not you like his input, I think it is fair to realize that for every artist, not every effort leads to a masterpiece. We should respect artistic choices, even if the end result is not what we want to hear.

And regarding the mentioned dissonances in the "New Version", a quick listen gives me the chords: Fm, Db, Bbm, Gdim, over a bass that repeats the notes Eb, F, Ab and Bb (correct me if my ears fooled me). Nothing really out of the box, unless people are offended by the bassline starting on Eb, not on F, and the diminished chord. Moreover, the same chords and bass line can be found in the final version, although the bass is mixed in less loud (which makes the presumed "disharmonicity" a bit less obvious). Yes, some slash chords and harmony that are not typical "pop", but hey, Prince is involved...

I'm not a Kate Bush fan. Sure I enjoyed one or two of her hits in the early eighties, but that's it. Why Should I love You - as it appeared on The Red Shoes in 1993 - never really appealed to me because I didn't think it sounded much like Prince. But this new Ghost Mix - be it Prince's dub on Bush's demo or a remix of Prince's dub by Sylvia Massy - sounds much more like Prince to me and so I like it better than the released version. biggrin
