Your favorite highlights from "Live at the Aladdin" dvd

This show has always had weird audio problems .Well at least my copy hqs.It will get real loud then low so last night I watched it with headphones

Fantastic show!!! No low points
I thought 3rdeyegirl was the best prince band but the NPG 2002 era might be just as good
Questions-are all these performances taken from the same show or is it similar to SOTT?
Also why the pictures of prince and his band during some performances? Is it because some video footage was lost?

Favorite moments for me are when he sings "U want me" and "push & pull" that guitar solo is great

The performance of sometimes it snows during the credits is also very good

neutral almost forgot!
What is up with the new dance prince introduced at this show called the
"Ozzy Oz-burn"
Any of you ever tried that dance?

Yes the Ozzy Oz-(burn)borne dance is based on the guy himself. Just how he moves about in general. It's a pisstake because that's how Ozzy walks in real life. Now it's come to light he has Parkinson's, any dancing impersonating his movements is no longer funny. Take note, orgers. neutral

"Whole Lotta Love" and "The Ride" are great.

"Got A Broken Heart Again" is also high grade.

I should clarify though, that I like the songs and the performances, I just don't like the video footage. It's shot and edited in a way that gives me a headache. But the music is cool.

I honestly don't get the editing, the freeze-pan-n-scan shit. He did some of the same with the Rave DVD. And where's the start of the show? Why does it come in with "Pop Life?"

It's just not very well done. I've seen fan-edited shows (of whoever) where people have compiled their audience footage and made it into one big concert video, and those feel 100x better than the Aladdin DVD.

I was at the taping and what we ended up getting was a watered down version of a classic show. His performance of Power Fantastic alone would of been the standout . Don’t get me wrong I love what we got but there was so much left on the cutting room floor. Hopefully one day we get a deluxe edition in some way, shape or form.

My take is that Prince sort of had this petulant idea that if you wanted to see the whole show, you had to be there. And I also just don't think he had the best taste when it came to documenting his live shows - even the PR Live release has some really suspicious artistic choices. ONA Live was also weird and his other one off live shows.

Someone I once knew said P looked bored through the entire concert and that she personally was bored by it, and we all know what that means, when a woman says she's 'bored'. cool

Yeah, I agree with both of you on this. Obviously Prince himself was 'happy' with the releases but as a fan it just felt very weird if you'd been to his shows.

I'm gonna expand on that a bit and take it another direction. While I don't know if he was bored, I do think he was nervous about what he was doing. How?

I think his then-recent trip into religion was something he wasn't fully sure about, in that he knew his stance on JW and all that was going to be greatly affect his audiences. And that maybe the music wasn't going to be enough to keep people happy. There were moments when he was barking about stauros this or Jehovah that where he looked absolutely uncertain about what he was saying, or whether people would accept it.

While he had Graham by him rooting him on, he knew he was still the star of the show (in general). He had to hold his audience. He also knew that The Rainbow Children was a largely controversial album among the fan base. Could he burp up all that dogma to an audience that just wanted to hear "Darling Nikki" or "Jack U Off" and keep them engaged with chanting "theocratic order, y'all!", and also dropping hints about a woman's place, or giving some lesson on Ashkenazi Jews? Ain't shit funky about any of that, and he knew it.

So was he bored? Maybe. Maybe he was already falling out of love with the JW stuff, maybe not. Maybe he was just trying to save face. Maybe he was trying out this lacquered, compressed sound he'd honed and was unsure about it.

Either way, I feel like Prince lacked some level of confidence during that time, and it showed. Especially on the Aladdin DVD. I was flat out bored watching it. It just drags.

Even with all of its shortcomings I still love this DVD.

One of the issues was that these shows were shot on early digital cameras and that the picture quality ended up being poor because of that choice. That could also explain some of the odd editing choices. And the grainy quality of the DVD. And let's not forget about the volume issues this DVD has, extremely unprofessional (and unpleasant).

So as a production technically this DVD is a disaster. But the band and most of the performances are great! Plus I managed to finally get my dad into liking Prince with this DVD, after he had destroyed my brothers 'evil' copy of Purple Rain in the 80's. There was no denying the musical prowess Prince had with this band.

The highlights for me are 1+1+1=3, Gotta Broken Heart Again, Strange Relationship, Whole Lotta Love, Family Name, The Everlasting Now.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

The washed-out visuals, the bad sound, and completely lame and unnecessary version of Whole Lotta Love are just a few of my favorite highlights.
