A lot of those elements are in "New Power Generation." Tevin's oopey doop or whatever, Robin's "Awwww right!" etc. It's sort of genius that Prince took different elements and made other songs from them. I've always thought "New Power Generation" and "Gett Off" were the two best EPs with this practice. "Cream" is the close third.

I thought about this thread last night. I believe that "love 2 the left of me, love 2 the right" is merely a riff on Morris and Jerome saying "Sexiness to the left of me..." "Sexiness to the right!" in the movie. It's all meta unto itself. Someone already noted that this is probably where it comes from, and I believe that's the most logical answer.

Sometimes a lyric is just a lyric. Not every single word Prince wrote is 100% real life inspiration. Often the inspiration is just the music itself, and finding words that fit the music. And honestly, the song is almost something Morris should've sung in the movie instead of something like "Love Machine," since he had Robin and wanted Aura.
