Well, just because you're overly emotional about a song doesn't make it it his overall. I just makes it his best for you.

As a teenager, I was a big fan of his instrumentals or instrumental sections. "Alexa De Paris" and "Venus de Milo" were two favorites.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Come on man, it's a good instrumental. But in no shape or form a groundbreaking Prince composition. And as Trivialpursuit stated, I think Alexa De Paris is waaaaay stronger as an instrumental. :

But it's objectively a wrong statement. Come on now! It's a pretty piano piece, but not even close to a structural groundbreaking work in his discography.

I hope the long version gets released someday.

Could hope it will be on the Parade deluxe?

And I love Clare Fischers strings generally

I will say, being a piano player, I was low-key obsessed with it in 1986. Mostly because it really as something different from all his previous stuff. But we sorta saw glimpses of him on piano not just in concert, but when he played "Purple Rain" on piano in the movie, or his prowess on "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore," the beginning of "Condition of the Heart," or "God" (either version).

It also sorta showed how he could compose a song, even a short instrumental, and really make it into something unique and beautiful, not just something that's there for the sake of it. I mean, Prince - the biggest popstar in the land - was putting out an instrumental on an album, and a b-side?!?! I think it was a bold move.

BUt then again, he was cocky by that point and was trying so hard to distance himself from all things Purple Rain in some ways. (haircuts, clothes, musically, whatever)

His best song? Nope. It almost seems obtuse to add the "for me," because how does someone not hear a masterpiece like "Adore" or pop perfection like "Private Joy" and think "Venus de Milo" trumps all that?

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yep, Adore is always my pick. Context is key, context is everything. This shit was recorded 1986/1987 on analog equipment and it is by faaaaar the best produced song of that decade made all by himself (and while yes, he didn't play horns, he arranged those to perfection).

Fuck man, that song doesn't sound like 1987 at all, it sounds ethernal like no other piece of music during. Adore is the reason he could've retired on top, but he actually released my other favorite song Pink Cashmere a year after(!!!). Maaaaan I love Adore and Pink Cashmere. #1 songs in my top list, can't separate them from the top spot.

There used to be a version of Aguilera's "What A Girl Wants" that had that organic acoustic-guitar pop thing that "Pink Cashmere" does. They replaced it on the album later with a more radio-friendly remix. But it makes me think of the acoustic nature of "Pink Cashmere." Then, when those strings really come in and he solos over them. GOD YES.

If "Adore" were to ever have a near-worthy opponent, it would've been "Pink Cashmere." "Adore" still wins, but it's gonna have to work for it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I always thought "Venus De Milo" would've been a great prelude to a wedding ceremony, or maybe an outro when everyone walks out. If I get married, I fully plan to use it as the prelude to us walking down the aisle.

We had Venus playing on a loop whilst the guests were coming in, prior to our service.

A beautiful track. I think its like an interlude more than anything substantial, and still feels right on Parade's 1st side. Side 2 was pure Prince going at it.

I see the usual suspects are here to denounce the quality of a totally brilliant P song.

Adore and Pink Cashmere were recorded 1.5 years apart. And you can tell. Both brilliant songs, but for me Pink Cashmere has a production sheen that Adore doesn't. Adore kinda sounds a bit like it was recorded behind a door, like the rest of Sign album. Adore by 'a door'. razz

This shouldn't come as much surprise. You can tell Lovesexy album was recorded at Paisley Park. Likewise Pink Cashmere. The whole Sign 'o' the Times project was recorded before Paisley Park came online.

I hired a string trio for my wedding and sent them a cd of it to learn for when wifey walked down the vineyard aisle.

On the day, they played something else.

No, it isn't. The first two songs on the Batman album are great, good old dance and rock and this hits you... The first time that Prince did something that was total kitsch. A brunch of clichés. The album never recovered. Not even Vicki Waiting or Partyman could save it. And on later albums we got songs like Graffiti Bridge and Diamonds and Pearls. I would even go so far as to say that Arms of Orion was the beginning of the end of Prince as an innovating, interesting and creative songwriter and started a long line of boring unoriginal ballads.
Yes, I'm overreacting of course, but it shows how much of a disappointment this song was. I was like, is this really Prince? The guy I love so much because he doesn't o commercial shit?
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.
