Y'all shut up. "The Arms of Orion" is a great song.

No, it isn't.

It is.

I used the chord progression as a bridge in a song I wrote in the mid-90s. It was a bit more upbeat, but the chord progression is solid, and fit the song.

That's not saying much.

No, it isn't. The first two songs on the Batman album are great, good old dance and rock and this hits you... The first time that Prince did something that was total kitsch. A brunch of clichés. The album never recovered. Not even Vicki Waiting or Partyman could save it. And on later albums we got songs like Graffiti Bridge and Diamonds and Pearls. I would even go so far as to say that Arms of Orion was the beginning of the end of Prince as an innovating, interesting and creative songwriter and started a long line of boring unoriginal ballads.
Yes, I'm overreacting of course, but it shows how much of a disappointment this song was. I was like, is this really Prince? The guy I love so much because he doesn't o commercial shit?

The trifecta of Arms Of Orion, Lemon Crush (Trying to catch up with New Jack Swing) and NPG pt I was enough to almost ruin the foundation he built up from at least 1980 and forward up to that point.

Diamonds and Pearls on the other hand! Come on maaaaan. That is truly Prince challenging himself and executives around him that maybe was saying "Ok Prince, do your most ambitious attempt to arrange a overtly commercial song that we could use in a Disney Movie or something similar"

And he did. And he never looked better in a Video and a video has never glowed as much as this one. Looks absolutely stunning and Expensive. Like it's something from a Italian luxury brand.

"Free" from 1999 is just as kitsch/cliche as Arms of Orion. Unlike Arms of Orion, Free cannot even be explained as being a thematically matching part of a film soundtrack.

Moonbeam levels was considered during a long time for 1999 album and was replaced in the last moment by Free......what a pity ......Moonbeam Levels is way better than free IMO !!

Love the verse, love the break after the chorus. Love the production. But the chorus itself is boyband material.

But didn't we all realize that wasn't the case? I think that used to be my thought, too, but someone sorta debunked it. I think they're both great songs. "Moonbeam Levels" has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it. It was one of the two reasons I bought Prince 4Ever when it came out.

They both have a gospel or anthemic flair to them, although "Free" is much more choir-centric in a way, uplifting. With "Moonbeam Levels," it's more about the chord progression or melody having that feel than the actual message of the song.

I do think it would've fit on 1999. It's a textured and layered song. It has that gritty feel that a lot of songs on the album have. Hell, it deserved a b-side spot, at the very least. It seems he liked the song for a long while, always trying to fit it on an album somewhere.

imo Venus De Milo is a great track, on a great album, with a great mix of tracks and styles, that doesnt have one bad song on it. Back at a time when Prince and The Revolution were knocking it out of the park. I'm an album guy. Not singles. And this one is a listener from start to finish, it grabs you and sucks you in.

Well said. I'm an album guy too and Venus De Milo fits perfectly as the closer of side one and the gateway to the glorious Mountains. So many styles on Parade and it flows oh so well. A perfect album imo.

One of my favourite all-time instrumentals too. Love it to pieces. Short, sweet, with a melancholic beauty. Learned to play it on the keyboard recently - not very well as it's not my instrument - but still an absolute joy and buzz to even get close to it. More than happy to have this played as the final piece of music at my funeral.

Parade in general is Prince on a whole different level. Not to say those songs are "better" or "worse" than others, but the Parade album (to me) stands alone in his catalog.

I love Venus De Milo. It's beautiful. Aside from the song itself, and how awesome it is, it also reminds me of how albums used to have a distinct album arrangement per side.

I hired a string trio for my wedding and sent them a cd of it to learn for when wifey walked down the vineyard aisle.

On the day, they played something else.

To be fair, the Parade album doesn't have anything particularly special about it. Some of these songs are from 77, 82, 83, etc. It's basically a hodge podge that has a clarinet and a fairlight all over it but that's it.

Ridiculous. One of the Greatest Albums of All Time. Brilliant Songs...some he played for his whole career...some played in posthumous tributes.

Yeah who cares when the songs were written. He put them together in perfect sequence with amazing, often very sudden, transitions. Does it work together? Like few albums ever have.

Nonsense. A few magazine quotes hyping a new album cannot deny the fact that he continued to play half of Parade throughout his life.
