gotta say, I'm with Bart on this one. I'd love for it to be true but it's just unrealistic at the estate & labels' current pace.

But people like Bart, and maybe you - I don't know, is that none of us are running an estate of a mega star. We are basing our opinions on our perception of things. We're not in the mix with decisions and plans.

Prince fans are spoiled (whatshisname's not a Prince fan at all, anyway). We think everything should come out as fast as Prince recorded it. Just remaster, plan the artwork, arrange manfacturing, distribution, the sale campaign, arrange for shipping, etc. in a week or two. Sorry not sorry - life doesn't work that way. This ain't an Etsy or eBay shop. Dis a bid'ness.

There is logic to not oversaturing a market - and the market today is incredibly different than it was even 20 years ago when NPGMC was around. Even whatshisname talks about how small a fanbase there is, yet he and folks like him think everyone should be able to purchase $400 sets every 2 or 3 months.

Well, bully for him for having that kind of job. Most don't. Most people have a spouse or S.O., children, mortgages, car payments, insurance, etc. The estate knows that. They also know it takes time to move merchandise from inception to delivery and beyond. They can't bombard people with stuff every 3 months.

SOTT was huge, and that's probably why it was the only release that year (unless Sony Legacy did something... I don't keep up w/ the purple vinyl stuff).

I mean, forget the supply line problems that have even plagued the George Michael estate (one of their big releases has been pushed to 2022 because of that). They should just make it happen, according to whatshisname. He may read the whole internet and consider himself an expert, but the fact is he isn't - none of us are. But basic business practices seem like a logical understanding. Maybe not, for some.

So whatever "pace" folks think the estate should release stuff is likely not well-informed. And that's not because people are stupid or anything. They're just ignorant of the inner workings of the estate.

Fans already bitch that things are a "money grab," so if they release 3 or 4 SDE's a year, fans would still bitch that it's a money grab.

It's not unreasonable to want it, it is unreasonable to expect it at an unreasonable pace.

Now we wait on whatshisname to come through and rebutt everything cuz he's read the internet and knows everything. lol lol

There's a huge gulf between "one new album a year" and "$400 sets every 2 or 3 months", and I think a lot of people here would agree that the latter is unreasonable, but I do think it's very reasonable to want more than just one single album per year.

As for the money grab thing... yeah, I'd say that releasing vinyl color variants of popular albums that have already been released in recent years is very much a cash grab. Totally different than releasing a SDE with lots of previously unreleased material.

I definitely get there's a diff in those things. Totally fair. They were extreme examples, but sometimes I feel like that's what a lot of Prince fans expect. Just a constant stream of releases. Also, we've had more than one thing a year, except 2020.

I can see why they are doing the vinyl thing, though - purple or not. Much of that stuff has never been reprinted on vinyl, or not printed at all. It is Legacy, after all. That's what that part of Sony does, handles the legacy part. They're systematically going through and putting everything on vinyl. There are a lot of vinyl folks out there, so there's a market. And maybe a lot of regular buyers who are into vinyl would want a vinyl copy of something. The average consumer is'nt going to give two shits about SOTT or Parade SDEs. Ya know?

Someone should do a list (again) of everything released new (including stuff that was never on vinyl before). Just for perspective.

Unless we hear a 'big' name being paid reasonable sums then the streaming thing will be a dud.

Prince was unabel to run websites for long.

Of course the Estate is not Prince but they'd have to convince us...

Oh year sure, the people who couldn't manage to release anything except a single album in 2021 are going to develop a streaming service, despite the Estate still being mired in various tax issues etc.

the tax issues seems to be settled or about to be,

Nope. Federal tax bill, sure, but that will still take months. Guess what? That's just one of the tax bills.

I never said this. In fact, I have repeatedly said the opposite. Hell, you got your panties in a twist here because I spoke the truth.

.

After SOTT SDE there were six+ months without a single peep. And then the announcement for W2A, four months in advance of its release, which basically meant W2A was going to be it for 2021. A single album. When there should be an SDE of a classic era album every year, plus another "new" release (but not an expensive SDE) every year. Two releases featuring new music each year isn't a lot. Instead we got W2A with an overpriced "SDE" version of it.

.

2022 we'll likely see a single SDE (likely D&P since it is not part of the Sony/Legacy reissues and since it was obviously planned for late 2021 but W2A's absurd late release prevented that) on top of the reissues in Feb. Other than that? Perhaps the odd overpriced 7" and who knows what superfluous overpriced and pointless RSD release.

But with prince it could be even more amazing as he has such an incredible wealth of vault material. Every concert, sound check, after show and jam session…mixed and remastered…

.

You lot are waaaay overestimating what's in the vault. Did Prince "tape" every show? Perhaps, but then likely not as a multi-track but simply as a "direct recording from the mixing desk" -- which means there isn't much magic to be done there WRT improving its audio. Did he keep all of those recordings? Again: possible, but not guaranteed. On what kind of medium were those shows taped? Simple cassettes (for the 1980s)? That would mean additional technological limitations.

.

All of this is even more true WRT rehearsals, soundchecks, etc. Whether aftershows were taped: who knows? I wouldn't be surprised if the only recording of the legendary Trojan Horse show is the one made by that club's owners that night.

.

Then there is the question: were all of these recordings kept? Were they properly stored? Were they documented properly?

.

A reminder: every tape that gets "pulled" in the Iron Mountain archive means a cost. Then they need to digitize it, clean it up master it, etc. Each of these things costs money. They'll need to invest a fuckton of money to simply have a sizeable amount of recordings available. That's a lot of risk for a service that might not make any money. Plus they need to be careful not to hinder future SDEs. Plus the first (and most profitable) half of the archive (everything pre-1996) is controlled by Warners, and I don't expect them to just be okay with all those recordings being sold without getting their part of the action.

I had a look at the posthumous releases on Princevault.com last night and (excluding the coloured vinyl stuff) there seems to be 11 album releases in only 5 years. 7 of those releases contain a lot of unreleased material. A LOT. Other than wishing the Anthology was also a physical release and hoping a streaming/download service was set up, I think the Estate has been quite generous in a very short space of time when you consider they HAVE to monetize this asset and considering the disarray Prince left his legacy in.

Some of us on here are just spoiled and greedy.

A Prince Netflix, for a reasonable subscription price, I would love it. I guess there would be different subscription prices. It could be something like that : - 10$ for the 2000-2010's live - 20$ for the 1990's concerts - 30$ for the 1980's concerts in low-rez - 50$ for the aftershows.

what a terribe, terrible, terrible idea that would be

Why?
That's how Netflix and streaming services work.

They're not going to give everything for the same subscription price.
So the more you pay, the more you have access to everything.

Hot off the presses, a quote I just read from that one French forum, that some sort of streaming/download/something platform is being prepared to deliver content, namely live videos of aftershows at this point in time, and will roll out some time in 2022.

Personally I think it'll probably be scrapped in favor of more colored LP releases if it even existed in the first place, but it would be nice. What do we think of this and what do we hope to see format wise? This has been discussed to death, but is it really happening? Probably not. Discuss.

Streaming services only succeed, though, if they have the actual content to justify the subscription price. To this day, I've heard people complain that Apple TV+ doesn't have enough content to justify $4.99 a month. The abundance of content on a service like HBOMax justifies the $14.99 a month.

There isn't enough content in the World of Prince to justify anything more than $4.99 a month, and even that would be a TOUGH sell.

Are you kidding?
This is not aimed at a big audience, but to Prince fans only.
5$ for such a niche market would be commercial suicide.

There are hundreds of Prince concert recorded, music videos that could be upgdaded in HD, and unreleased movies.
Enough to be entertained for thousand of hours, mostly in low-rez😂

Outtakes, alternate versions and configurations, mixes, rehearsals, unreleased album projects, aftershows, that would interest a diehard fan but likely not the general public.

If it leaned heavily on Prince's post-96 output I would be happy.
