How do you define young?

Under 50
Under 40 *I fit here*
Under 30 *I look like I fit here, just*
Under 20 *I wish*

Depends on your definition of young. I'm 31. Do I qualify as being young?

I was thinking 20's and younger but you are still young at 31 (3121) heehee. 31 is alot younger than me at 61 and Prince would be 63 right now. razz smile

Did you have a moment/song that converted you? I'm curious as to how that might happen to a younger person, not too long ago.

So cool to see young Prince fans. I believe most P fans started in the 80s and are around 45-50 today. I am 47 (although I only became a fan in 93).

.
I always hated to see Prince as an ´80s artist´ only, so it´s cool to see his music is reaching younger generations

The first Prince song I was into was Sexy MF when someone showed it to me, around 2011. Loved it. I then heard "Breakfast Can Wait" when it came out and loved it as well, so decided to check out his repertoire on Spotify. This was before his music was pulled from streaming services a year or so later. Songs that initially grabbed me were Crazy You, DMSR and I Would Die 4 U. T

38 here too nod became a fan at 17. Found this place during the black & purple years and been a lurker for years before I started posting.

Virtually all of my Prince-friends I know online, it makes me happy to see young & upcoming Prince fans, in addition to the fresh elements of surprise they’ll find from the music, they’ll also find a tight family for themselves from this community if they wanted to make friends smile

Heard "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on K-Tel's SoundWaves album. I sorta stayed in his orbit, but 1999 really put it over the top for me in bigger ways. (The Canadian version didn't have Prince on it.)

We had some music channel in germany that played some retro charts and they played purple rain. The whole song, with the whole guitar solo and I was hooked. I know purple rain is that cliché song but it was the first song I heard of him. Followed by kiss on one of my moms CDs.

2003 ish, was a member of a Nirvana forum where everyone hated Nirvana and just posted about stuff they felt was miles superior in the non-Nirvana section. (This is why it's silly when people whine no other fan site is as critical about their artist like the org--there are many. MANY, websites where the fanbase actively dislikes the main artist on the URL, people here actually ultimately do seem to love and respect Prince).

anyywayy, amidst all the post-rock like Slint or whatever there'd be one or two people really repping the Prince hard. They'd get kinda clowned on, but it was intriguing, they'd have well-composed arguments about how he was the G.O.A.T. Laughed a little with the crowd at first at the idea, because Prince is like Madonna where you can picture the imagery without necessarily knowing the tracks, (and 80s was definitely outofvogue in 2003, btw) but was definitely intrigued.

Had a buddy keep telling me, "Purple Rain, man". Generally, I avoid the "biggest" releases with legacy artists for whatever reason, so I found another buddy who was like, oh, I got the track for you.

"Alexa de Paris" was the first Prince track I was sent. I was completely underwhelmed. Like.... WTF, this is what people are going on about? I mean it's an okay song, but, c''mon, as someone's Intro to Prince?? "Alexa de Paris"? Homeboy went too far in the other direction.

So now it's like "Yeah, Prince is overrated" to the Purple Rain buddy, he's like "'Alexa de Paris'? WTF. Purple Rain, idiot."

Realized it was an LP rec, not a track rec, so, put on Purple Rain....

Amazing story ^^^ lol

Mine was in 2000, I saw “Rave” in the used section - I guess whoever sold it back was a Prince snob wink - and I for one, couldn’t be more glad. My reasoning for being intrigued was shallow, I couldn’t believe how gorgeous of a man he looked in the cover. Now mind you, I used to do a purchase sweeping from the used section because I believed (and still) that there are totals gems in there, I certainly have found amazing unexpected surprises there, the other reason was because I was broke and needed to economize.

Ironically, I instantly fell in love with “Rave” so you can imagine my shock later when I joined the community only to out find out many Prince fans loathed the album. But to my 17 years old mind, it felt like I walked into a different musical parallel world altogether, the album had whimsical & quirky moments, sometimes vulnerable, sometimes funny and yes mysterious at times too. My frame of reference regarding American music at the time, was limited to American 90s R&B music, mostly female r&b artists, so this album was completely left field than anything I purchased in 2000. In hindsight, was the best purchase from that year? Not at all, but the intrigue from that album opened the floodgate for what became later a journey in Prince’s music which not only inspired me, but broadened my horizon when it came to exploring many other styles, genres & artists.

My ex boyfriend is a huge Prince fan. We got together around the time Musicology came out which was around my 14th birthday. He was already a big Prince fan at that time but because Musicology was the first big Prince CD to come out since he became a fan, he was understandably very excited about it. So he'd play it all the time. That was my first real experience with Prince outside of the likes of Purple Rain, Kiss and 1999. Although I was never too into it to be honest.

A couple of years later, when 3121 came out, I started to become more interested in Prince. I used to listen to that album a lot. Planet Earth and the LotusFlower albums kind of passed me by though. I broke up with my boyfriend around that time too but we were still friends (and still are friends now) and we went to Denmark together to see Prince and others perform. My job at the time got us into a VIP party where we got to meet Prince and the band and several other artists who were on tour with him. Unfortunately, our meeting with Prince was very short. It was an extremely short conversation and I'm not even sure if he could understand my accent but it was a great experience.

That concert on Denmark, and another one in Dublin that same year completed my transition from being a very casual fan to wanting to seek out everything he'd ever done. Luckily for me, my ex had thousands of songs so he gave me every single Prince, Time, NPG and associated artist's album plus a load of unreleased material. From there I worked backwards from 20Ten all the way back to For You. Experiencing an artist's discography in reverse order gives you a unique perspective, I find. You're not blinded by nostalgia and you're able to appreciate each album for what it is.

Agreed fully. That experience was my discovery through his music as well. Coupled with the fact that Prince was somewhat obscure in my country, so his discography at the time albeit recent to the year 2000, wasn’t complete in the record store, the scarcity of his albums made the listening experience more potent and relying on online purchases at the time was few & far between because it was complicated razz which turned out to be good, because it gave a chance to stay with an album for a considerable amount of time until it marinated in my psyche, so to speak.

Well, I can assure you EmmaMcG, the year 1982 when I first heard '1999'... i just can tell you what i did to a 16 year old youngster on his way to school on a schoolbus, and someone having a transistor radio with her where that song was playing on... we both were instantly in love with the catchines of that song.

The it sook me a year later before i could get my hands on the single version of the album '1999' and was bloooooooown away.

With it came a new bunch of influences, new bands, genres, etc.Just up till 1982, I was heavily into the canadian rock band Rush (their ''Moving Picutres album'' still is in my top ten list of all time albums, because when something hits you when you're young...)

And then the big metieor that Pruple Rain caused in 1984... It even made me chang emy looks, shoes became high heel boots, black curly hair, trench coat etc... Rediculously in love.

Going to the disco every weekdn with similar friends. Freaks as we were, in the middle of the dance floor, wwaiting for aly Prince tune- rufusing to dance to other music. wink

Nostalgia can hit you hard, and yes it is a incurable.

But I do agree on discovering those few earlier albums after 1985... For You, Dirty Mind, etc.
