alternative version of Pheromone

I have a version of Pheromone that I'm pretty sure if fan-made, but I want to see what other people think.

It's shorter than the album version -- basically the same length as the test pressing version. In fact, the only difference between it and the test pressing version is that it starts off with a little funky keyboard (horn?) lick.

In an earlier thread (yes, Bart, I researched this before I asked the question) @TrivialPursuit explained that there was a version called "Pheromone Version 2" on a bootleg compilation called "The Versace & Other Experiences". (See: https://prince.org/msg/7/455511 .) That version starts with a horn too, but I don't think it's the one I have. That version is supposedly 5:14 and has other noticible differences, whereas the version I have is only 4:28 and as no differences other than the intro. (One thing that wasn't clear from @TrivialPursuit's post was whether those new mixes were authentic or fan-made. To answer that question he pointed to another thread, but the link he provided was wrong -- it takes you to a thread on ComputerWorld.)

I suspect the version I have is a fan-made Frankenstein where somone copied the keyboard/horn intro from Pheromone Version 2 and pasted it onto the beging of Pheromone test pressing version. Anyone have any other ideas what I might be listening to?

Just a thought... around 1993 or 1994, an early configuration of the Come album was broadcasted on a Dutch radio show called Dance Tracks. I taped all the tracks back then, must have the cassette somewhere. If I remember correctly, many of the tracks sounded much different from the final album versions. Maybe your Pheromone version is from that one?

Anyone else remember this broadcast? Probably, it was a move of Prince to show WB that he could bypass them by directly taking his music to radio...

Might it be the 1993 BET Video LP version?

Frank Zappa did the same thing during his feud with WB in 1977. He broadcast his L├Ąther album over the radio and told his listeners to tape it.

According to Princevault, the BET version was an instrumental. The version I have has vocals.

I love me some "Pheremone". One of the most listened to tracks on in the 90's for me. I even recorded a dry parody version as a cover song in 1994, that people, who had no idea where it came from, loved.

I remember going to Las Vegas in the mid 2000's with someone I was dating, and we watched the Crazy Horse Show, and I was surprised and loved the crazy edits and extensions of Pheremone played LOUD over a movie theater like system. Had no idea Pheremone was weaved into the show until I saw it.

Probably just an unofficial fan-made mix then.

Hi Lurker.

If we're thinking of the same track, what you have is a hybrid between the BET instrumental (the intro part) and the album version (body of the track).

I'm not sure who made it originally, but it's commonly found 'The Dawn' 3CD bootleg.

4:28 is indeed the version from Dolphin's The Dawn set.

Thanks @VaultCurator and LoveGalore. I added that info to the file's metadata.

Because he hates fan-made versions of songs with a passion and this thread illustrates the problem caused by those versions perfectly: after a while, you don't remember what they are. Or you start sharing them as if they were not fan-made versions.

Indeed. If it comes from The Dawn set as said above, it wouldn't be the first time that whole set is being confused for a genuine configuration on this very board.

I don't believe they are yet listed on Princevault (though they are mentioned on some pages), but 2 promo DAT's were sold to several European radio stations and premiered on 1994/03/03. One was studio material and one was the Beautiful Experience concert.

.

Both entries are listed on my website (link below).

.

4DF released both on bootlegs, though, unfortunately, their pristine sounding version of the concert has been slightly tinkered with to try and recreate the original concert (thus becoming yet another fanmade fake), and does not exactly reflect the original broadcast, which had already bootlegged before as such, but with either radio jingles on it or lower sound quality. Their release of the studio DAT is similar to the original AFAIK, though.

.

The day they decide to release that show, I sure hope the Estate won't make the mistake of confusing the original recording of the show with the slightly altered version that was on the promo DAT, and release the latter (which is an important historical document as is). This will be a good test of their expertise, whomever is at the helm the day it happens.

.

On a sidenote, one of the the 2 differences between both versions is that Tommy Barbarella's solo was cut off The Jam on the DAT (but strangely reinserted in the Beautiful Experience film, which is where 4DF got the part they copied and pasted on their release). I hope one day someone can ask Tommy is he was aware of that and if he has any idea why Prince decided to edit him off the audio version of the show, but not off the music video that was made out of the same performance.

That makes perfect sense. I perfer authentic content as well and usually want nothing to do with fan versions, but I can't help liking the addition of the funky lick at the begining of this fake.

Thanks for clarifying that. My musical knowledge is, admittedly, very limited and I don't have a very sophisticated ear. I appreciate any help I can get.
