In the summary of this topic :

1) Welcome 2 America is not dead yet, still charting in the US for the 11th consecutive week!
Will it reach the 100k mark?

2) We ll see Purple Rain becoming exceptionally huge, surely crossing the 200k mark, as predicted in the first post of the first topic ( part. 1)!
Some continuity here!

US Billboard The week of October 23, 2021

W2A is out of every charts in the world now, it seems, besides in the USA
.
Even from the top 200 Belgium ( Flanders) charts where it spent 10 consecutive weeks.

SOTT deluxe spent 10 non consecutive weeks in this charts, so W2A might come back next week.

For those who said W2A was " Such a huge flop", well it's clearly fucking Drake, Kanye West and even Lady Gaga over-hyped current releases. That's my Prince!

Also, released the same fucking day, Happier Than Ever from Billie Eilish, is only doing 3.5 times the numbers of W2A, despite millions of dollars spent in the promotion, music videos, singles, huge airplay, over hyping, etc.

Which is the most profitable to you, you think?

Streaming doesn't bring much money.
If you do one billion streams, all the parties involved get like 650.000 dollars to share between them.
Music videos cost millions, tv adds etc. Cost millions too. Not talking about the recording in itself.
W2A was already recorded, they just pulled out a CD-R and paid someone to master it.
It's not the same thing listening to music for free, amd actually buying an album, or an hyper-expensive SDE.

Welcome 2 America reenters the official swiss top 100 album chart at #91, after being out for 3 weeks!
Chartrun : 2-4-13-31-33-57-78-out (3 weeks) -91.

Which means it wasn't that far from the top 100 during all this time.

W2A exits again the official top 100 Swiss album charts.

With the Holiday season coming ( half of the album sales are from November/December only!), and without anymore promotion, it's over now.

Charting 8 weeks non consecutively, it's his best achievement for a studio album since Planet Earth, which peaked at #1 and ran for ten weeks in the charts.

Best selling albums in the US in 2021 so far, as of week 42

Rank Estimated 2021 Sales TITLE Artist Estimated Total Sales

19 144,000 PURPLE RAIN Prince 4,189,000
62 82,000 WELCOME 2 AMERICA Prince 82,000

??? 16,000 THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE Prince 2,955,000
??? 13,000 THE TRUTH Prince 13,000
??? ????? 4EVER Prince 246,000

Some analysis here :

1) 255,000 copies sold of the 4 best selling Prince albums this year.
With this 4 only, it has already beaten the total Prince sales of 2019 (250, 000) and is on his way to also beat the 2020 numbers (320, 000) by the end of the year.

2) 4EVER should be certified Gold by now, as it is a double album.Surely they must be in stores 5,000 copies left of that album. Without even talking about adding streaming.
Same thing for TVBOP, which should be recertified 3*Platinum for a long time : I m sure it benefitted from the few last years of music club sales.
With the Soundscan numbers proving their sales, it wouldn't cost more than a few dozens of bucks to certify them.

It just shows that WB doesn't care about RIAA awards anymore and are still from a long way to recertify Purple Rain.

Portugal official album charts are late, they usually publish two/three charts at the same time.
So, Welcome 2 America reentered the Portugal chart at #35 at week 40, then, exited again of the top 50 at week 41.

Chartrun : 2-6-5-19-16-19-out-21-out-35-out.

Which shows the album was never far from the top 50, and if a top 100 album existed in that country, it would have always been there.

That current chartrun gives W2A at #807 on the all time list in the Portugal charts.

W2A should do well in non-English speaking countries because the mediocre lyrics won't be understood very well.

Music videos, implying there are at least 2 of them.
For Happier than Ever, there is already 4 music videos. ( All of them directed by herself, maybe limiting the costs, or not if she s inexperienced)
Adding all that and the following videos will amount to millions of $.
You can see CGI on the video for Happier than Ever, underwater cameras, drones...

I agree the budget has considerably decreased compared to the hyper expensive 90's, but there are still expensive videos nowadays.

For her previous album, Eilish released a documentary whose cost were reportedly of 2 millions $, for instance.

Budgets are rarely reported, but Hurt, by Oliver Tree, and God's Plan by Drake cost each 1 million $ in 2018.
Saturnz Barz by Gorillaz cost 845k $ in 2017.

The lyrics is what sucked me into the album and made it very enjoyable amd interesting.
I completely disagree with the BLM, the cancel culture, religions, etc. but At least that's an interesting universe, Prince's and very strange views about things.
But at least, it's a sincere one and it's harmless.

But your opinion here is maybe shared by the marketing guys at Sony. That would explain why they didn't even bore to produce a lyric video for a few dozens of bucks!

Personally, I m trying to write lyrics over my music, amd it's very hard.
So, kudos for Prince for succeeding in writing lyrics for thousands of songs, renewing his topics for 40 years, when I m fighting to write three.

Despite a bunch of new important releases this week, Welcome 2 America is miraculously holding in the chArts! As we enter the hyper competitive period of the holiday season, I think the sales are very low that week. Especially when you compare with sales that summer. Surely the increasing prices of vinyl is to blame. We should really worry about it.

W2A entered the Billboard chart at #4 with 55k (including 50k pure sales).
That week the #4 is Elton John with only 29k ( including 17k sales), despite the fact he has currently a top 40, a duet with Dua Lipa.
His new album is filled with collaborations such as Nicki Minaj, Stevie Wonder, etc.
W2A was far from benefiting from that kind of hype and promotion.

Prince was also memtionned in the Billboard Magazine this week

Elton John is in the select group of acts with at least 20 top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, from March 24, 1956, when the list began publishing on a regular, weekly basis, through the new, Nov. 6, 2021, survey. Here's an updated leaderboard.

Most Billboard 200 Top 10s:
37, The Rolling Stones
34, Barbra Streisand
32, The Beatles
32, Frank Sinatra
27, Elvis Presley
23, Bob Dylan
22, Madonna
21, Elton John
21, Paul McCartney/Wings
21, Bruce Springsteen
21, George Strait
20, Prince

I would add that MPLS and Lotus Flower counted as only one album.

For a reminder, without any Nicki Minaj or Dua Lipa, Welcome 2 America sold 107,000 the first week.

The BLM movement and the crazyness around it, that goes well beyond the USAUSA, like the camcel culture movement, yes I completely disagree with it. Weird to be in favor of that.

It finally happened : Welcome 2 America left the Top current album sales charts, after 13 thrilling weeks of charting!

Since the Billboard 200 was until 2009 exactly what is the Top Current Album Sales Charts today ( a charts based solely on actual sales of less than 2 years old release), it's a great achievement for Prince.

Musicology aside ( since the album was sold with the concert tickets), I think Prince never did 13 weeks in a row in the top 100 of the BB200 since D&P!

Sony should have released at some point an audio cassette of W2A, It would have been a way to maintain it on the charts.
The Do Me Baby audio cassette sold 1981 copies in a few hours.

It will be hard to track the album sales by now.

Now, all lights will be on Purple Rain, which will be re-released in two days.
Should trigger an easy week at more than 10.000 copies.

Voyage has twenty different editions available (!) in stores, including 5,000 audio cassettes.
Like I said many times, it's a shame W2A didn't get released in this format too.
Disapointing US sales, but worldwide Voyage sold 759,000 copies worldwide including very few streaming numbers for equivalent sales, around 5%.

2) So, what's next for Welcome 2 America?
The grammy nominees list will be released next week, on the 23th of November.

To me there are chances it will get some at least minor nominations :

- Sony bought 600,000 YT views for the eponymous track in September, the time during when the Grammy's are selecting the albums contesting.
- It's the #18 best selling album released that year
- Albums'themes are properly attuned with the spirit of the times : BLM, cancel culture, complotism, technology taking control over humanity, etc.
- Prince is dead, and it's his first studio album since then.

3) Purple Rain should reach the top 20 of aLbum sales next week and the top 3 of vinyl, with the release of the Target exclusive remaster.

I expect about 10,000 copies sold( the preorders were fast sold out).

But it's strange nobody s talking about it on the org. Did someone buy it here?

RODSERLING

Best selling albums in the US in 2021 so far, as of week 45

Rank Estimated 2021 Sales TITLE Artist Estimated Total Sales
19 152,000 PURPLE RAIN Prince 4,197,000
64 85,000 WELCOME 2 AMERICA Prince 85,000
79 78,000 VOYAGE Abba 78,000

Hey, W2A is still above Abba's new album! Which had 20 different physical versions, including 5,000 copies sold in audio cassette.

Purple Rain has obviously crossed the 17 millions mark.
As of week 43, it "sold" Indeed 130,000 streaming equivalent sales, for a total of about 350,000 copies in that " Format" Since 2014.

Last certification was 13*Platinum in 1996. It sold 3.7 millions copies since then + 350,000 streaming equivalent sales.

I m not taking into account music club sales, because we don't have any data.
Did it sell nothinin MCs between 1996 and 2004?
It's very doubtful, since Thriller sold at least 800,000 copies between 1998 and 2000 alone in music clubs.
So 17 millions is a very minimal number.

It will be also fair to take into account the VHS/dvd/blu ray sales of the movie, since it contains the whole album. Why not? Certificationa take into account streaming after all.

We would be talking about more than 20 millions sales then... A fucking double Diamond certification.
