Like "Purple Rain."

And Courtin Time.
And Strollin.
And Calhoun Square.
And Adore.
And pretty much any song that isn't a club banger. I can definitely imagine any ballad in the style of You're My Love. That 80s country vibe. Some Forrester Sisters, Tanya Tucker, Reba vibe.

The release of Do Me Baby is a hint there would be no Controversy deluxe before a long, long time.
2022 : D&P
2023 (!): Parade
2024 : Purple Rain
2025 : Batman?
2026 : Graffiti Bridge?

There's still a small chance that D&P is released early 2022 (Feb/March) and Parade before Christmas. Not sure though...

No way.
They release "Do Me Baby" in January because they have that window of void.
I don't expect D&P before the second quarter of 2022.

Take a good note that Do me Baby was announced a good 3 months before the release. And that's just for half of a 45 rpm😂

Sigh.

The estaters have no vision, no strategy, no plan.

This isn't rocket science.

It's plain old straight marketing of historic content.

How hard can that be?

They miss even the simplest of anniversary dates, show lack of spine when evil remaster is presented, censor, do all sorts of irrelevent stuff but fail to deliver at a steady, predictable pace.

How was that guy at Iron Mountain coming along with his job there?

Don t agree, why is iT so difficult to give fans an update about developments at Iron mountain or how many people are working there, or to tell how much music there really is? Or is the vault just a myth?

they have no reason to answer any of those questions as it is about mystique

demistify everything and the image prince built over decades will crumble

hopefully one day you might learn about how it works at iron mountain but right now, in the grand scheme of things, the prince vault machine has only just got up and running in the last few years

Obviously the vault is not a myth.

There's a lot of people, lawyers, accountants, engineers, editors, artists, prodcuers, archivists and money involved here that doesn't make this stuff any easier. I've been very happy with the things they've put out so far. A bunch of hardcore fans asking "are we there yet? are we there yet?" from the back seat isn't something they need to deal with constantly IMO. Probably, they themselves don't always KNOW their next move, how much music exists in a usable format or quality and I doubt there's one person in charge of it all who can call definitve shots and sort it all out.

There's things I wish they would do but we all want something different and I think that, overall, the things they've put out have been pretty great. Even though I was personally pretty lukewarm on W2A, a lot of fans were clamoring for a new unreleased album and we got it. We asked for video and audio from live shows and we've gotten them. We wanted famous and/or unreleased vault tracks with clean(er) sound and we got a bunch of those.

Got a niftty little intimate piano and micorphone song-sketching/demo CD that was different. Orginals gave us songs he lent to other artists in thier orginal form and I found it quite interesting.

Would I like more? Sure! I have my own personal wish list but the estate doesn't exist solely to satisfy my desires, answer my questions and be on call 24/7/365 either so I deal with it.

Sorry you're frustrated though.

Exacty. smile

He took the spirit of raunchy and the idea of his demo-for-private-use-only-tape album 'Dirty Mind'

and even lifted it further from the production of the 'Prince' album.

He introduced his normal voice pitch, trew some religion in between the no-nonsense sex-talk,

He turned known funk into his trademark funk, as that tight willing unavoidable beat in the song title.

Had us youngsters all dragged into the idea that 'Sexuality' is all we would ever need.

He slowly builds up raw hot no-nonsense love in 'Do Me, Baby' to end in the cold at the end.

The full range of colours in the ultra poppy sing-a-long 'Private Joy', with it's fantastic edgy nearly out of tune guitar, leading into the light-punky 'Ronnie talk to Russia'.

He unashamed insisted that old bastard Ronnie should talk to Russia on a pre-1999-ish, politically soaked fun hoppin' tune, and having the damn thing explode into the funk splash ''Let's Work'', (I have the 12 inch version instead on my playlist - that guitar!).

Made us all believe that mastubating is fun and cool (Jack U Off).

-

Most important to me is his guitar sound. It started to take on all the strange sounds, a search for new sound use in nearly every song.

He let us feel that he treated that instrument as if it was the hottest chick in his hands, dragging around the place, use and abuse in the positive erotic sense of the word.

And not to mention the influence of new wave, cold wave etc... even a thin beginning of the Romantic Movement which seeped through here and there.

Ugh, love that album to death.

I could give it a ten-out-of-ten, only if the album was a bit longer.

I added 'Broken' and as an intro 'The Seonc Coming' to it,just to stretch the album a bit more to my likes.

(Yes i know, i left 'Tick Tick bang' and the demo 'Feel U Up' off. )

Great points.

He really did sorta define the MPLS sound on that album, not before necessarily. Not that the first three albums were bad.

The guitar did sound more defined, his use of the Linn was being carved out. Plus the new wave, punk, rockabilly, almost avante garde ("Sexuality," "Annie Christian"), and pure R&B pop fun - it all made a very diverse record.

I believe1999 is his most Minneapolis sounding record. You also had Vanity 6 and What Time Is It? rounding that out. But Controversy kicked down the door. 1999 just took a seat and got comfortable right next to ya woman! He walked right down your halls, and swiveled in your love seat! Wrote his name on ...you get the rest.

In short, Controversy is Prince looking for himself. And finding it.

By the way, masturbating was always fun and cool. It's just that Prince said what we already knew. haha

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

One thing I love about Controversy is that you can hear he is figuring things out, testing concepts and ideas and wordplay that maybe he wasn't 100% sure of yet but thought, fuck it.

It's the album where he first introduced his sense of humor. And his bravado was much more convincing with his chest voice than the nasal falsetto that rules Dirty Mind.

I agree with all this and you make good points here.

You can hear the growth, the progression and the refinement of what would become his signature sound developing here and it's all such a natural segue into 1999 where it all exploded and locked in for him. He was maturing.

Dirty Mind was great, showed off his tremendous songwriting skills and I love it but the arrangements were more sparse and it wasn't as experimental. The "layering" that he became so good at and his production skills started to exert themselves very strongly on Controversy.

I need to dust this disc off and give it a spin. It's been a minute since I listend to it.

Andre Cymone discusses Prince's "Controversy," released 40 years ago this month

Lots more behind the link. Here's the starter:

Catch up with Andre Cymone about Prince's "Controversy," as this month marks the 40th anniversary of the album's release, and a new funk record in the works from Cymone. Watch a video of the interview above, and check out a full transcript of the conversation below.

Interview Transcript

Edited for clarity and length.

Sean McPherson: You're tuned into Purple Current and The Current and I'm chatting with Andre Cymone. Now Andre is an essential part of the story of Minneapolis music and he continues to tour and release albums, and Andre's story is inextricably linked with the story of Prince and the Minneapolis sound. We're talking today partially because it's the 40th anniversary of the release of "Controversy," and also because I don't need an excuse to reach out to Andre Cymone, the man is a legend. Around the release of "Controversy," Andre had just left the touring group that Prince had put together. But it's a really fertile time to understand about theource EditorWord wrap relationship between these two Minneapolis icons. Andre, thank you so much for spending some time talking today.

ANDRE CYMONE: Thank you for having me. Thank you for reaching out.

I want to revisit that period 1980/1981, the album "Controversy," and when you think about the album, in retrospect, do you think about that album as an outsider who was sort of ready to move on and start your fruitful solo career? Or do you think about it as an insider who had played some of the songs live and been connected with the release--even though by the time it came out you were sort of out of Prince's camp?

Wow, that's a that's a loaded question.

I understand.

You know, I guess if I dial back in my brain, to that time period, I was writing a lot of music for myself at that time. I was doing a lot of--obviously me and Prince had been collaborating, it was first, second and third album, all that kind of stuff. We were very, very much, very involved in writing. And we always had been since our band back in the day, and all that kind of stuff. But this particular record, we definitely--obviously, I was definitely--you can hear it, if you know anything about my bass playing, and if you know anything about my history. My DNA, my bass DNA is all in it. But I will say, with this particular album, because it was midway through this album that I decided to basically take a powder. But midway through it, I was all in it, and looking forward to it, and all that other kind of stuff, and so it was a great time.

Here's the 43-minute audio on YouTube.

Been sleeping on this album for years. The title is better than I first guessed. Ronnie Talks To Russia is trash but that's it. Annie Christian is the truth.
