The old Prince definitely. This is the album with Anna Stesia on it which he pronouces it different back then. But very spiritual indeed. On the song No he talks about heaven and hell. Great song. it really gets you thinking. You should enjoy it. I hope you will.

Lovesexy is the beginning of the end.
Great album, but he did not progress artistically after Crystal Ball (SOTT).

Don't forget that the whole CD is one track. You can not advance from song to song. Your forced to listen to the whole thing at once.
Unless the one you are getting has been divided into tracks then you should be alright. "3 1 2 1"

Velvet Splash-
I disagree . . . I think that Lovesexy continued SOTT's creativity and spirituality. Lovesexy marks the height of Prince's spirituality on CD (official releases) even more so than The Rainbow Children. I think the name change era was the end . . .

I'm not talking at all about spirituality though, I'm talking about purely musical progression. I think that ended after the Black Album.

He was trying a whole new musical thing with lovesexy, trying to break his own "cool" pop mold with "Eye No, Positivity, Alphabet Street" He was jumping away from a predictable progression from Sign o The Times... and it was the first Prince album that really made me have to dig into the sound to get anything out of the songs...
I'd say he did a warp sideways into a different way of thinking musically... his first conservative step musically for me was Emancipation, this was designed for mass appeal (except for disc 3) VelvetSplash said: Se7en said: Velvet Splash-

Hate to be the lame numbskull on a website to say it BUT it's my absolute favourite album of all time by anyone ever. It has something to do with me being 14 years old at the time and being into music and Prince pulled this incredibly personal vision that had a completeness to it. It was like he was inventing a new language that I understood perfectly that was completely different to anything else I've ever heard. I love everything about that entire period...the videos (which alot of people hate), the look, his awesome band. It isn't for everyone but play it ten thousand times and then get the incredible live show from Dortmund in '88 that was released on video in two parts or the laserdisc (or pray that it gets released on dvd) and you have basically the reason why I'm typing a message on a Prince website. BTW it's great you have the taste to be discovering this music for the first time. Fewer and fewer people seem to be interested.
