Reading a thread recently where a poster quoted the lyric "turn a gay preacher to a sinner". Every lyric site I've looked at agrees that those are the lyrics. However, I've always heard the line as: "Turn a gay. Preacher to a sinner." As in, two separate things. Like, she's so hot she could turn a gay and she's so hot she could even turn a preacher into a sinner. Is there a consensus on how the line should be understood?

I'm hearing the lyrics as:

"She was pure, every ounce

I was sure when her titties bounce

In every way, she's a winner

Turn her gay, preach her to a sinner

The one you want your mama to meet

She's a Peach."

“To create something from nothing is one of the greatest feelings, and I would – I don’t know, I wish it upon everybody. It’s heaven.” – Prince

Yeah maybe it's Turner, gay Preacher to a sinner It's actually a reference to Kathleen Turner being a secret lesbian and a reference to her then recent role in Serial Mom.
We are definitely jumping down a rabbit hole here! Hang on, didn't she do the voice of Jessica Rabbit? Spooky 😱😱😱

The babies heart stuff could all make sense considering the time period, except he's definiely saying when, not with, there's no th sound in there. There's definitely an R sound after groove, so it can't be groove of. So the groove of a babies heart definitely isn't the lyric, but I finally got it

I got a new Peurto Rican score

And she's doing it on the floor

When the groove from my baby's hot

I'm givin' it all I got.

She's on the dance floor, in the groove and she's hot. It all makes sense and is all in context and ties up with all the sounds you can hear him singing. I believe this is 100%. Go listen to the album track, Brixton performance, Freedom concert, Cafe De paris or any other performance and this sits with all of them.

Nope.

Well it is. 🤷🏻‍♂️

*edit* According to Princevault.com, Jam Of The Year was recorded late 95/early 96, which would be before Mayte was even pregnant. For reference, Sex In The Summer was recorded summer '96.

Princevault is hardly conclusive here. They also state Sex in the Summer began as Conception with no information on when those backing tracks were recorded. Further, the only reason they say Summer there is because of when Kat and Rhonda joined.

It's pretty obvious that Prince had an instrumental called Conception that used the ultrasound. Jam of the Year's recording spanning to early 1996 means it's perfectly possible Conception came before JOTY. When do babies get their first ultrasound?

Edit: first ultrasound at 7-8 weeks pregnant. So she got pregnant in January, got the ultrasound in February, the song was recorded, then JOTY, both in "early 1996."

`

I agree that princevault isn't conclusive but it's the only indication we have for the recording date and does lead us away from the lyric referencing the groove of the baby's heart. If Mayte had conceived on exactly the 9th January, (which would be the date if she went full term to 16th October), then we're looking at 27th Feb as the earliest possible date for the ultrasound recording and probably later than that because most sources consider 8 weeks as the standard. As we head towards late Feb, early March, we're stretching the definition of early '96.

But considering he's singing when, not with and your suggested lyric, "WITH the groove of a baby's heart", has no cover for the R sound between groove and baby, it doesn't even matter anwyay because even if he's singing heart at the end, he isn't singing all of the other words.

That R sound is very key because that's the reason people hear, "When the groove rubber baby". So whatever words he's sinigng have to have that R sound in there somewhere.

I listened to it a lot accross various live recordings and, "When the groove from my baby's hot", fits all of them. And also fits the context of the song.

Stick some headphones on and give it a listen with that lyric in mind.

RIP sad

This thread could qualify as one of the most ridiculous discussions about Prince lyrics in the history of Prince.org.

And, based on its history, that's really saying something. Knock it off, you guys.

Nothing is funnier than keyboard outrage 😂🤣😂 comedy gold! Smile and stop taking the world so seriously.
I recall a gig in 1990 when Prince said 'If you take this shit seriously you're an even bigger fool than I am!'😎✌❤
