I've been listening to Rave continuously and am so shocked at any fans of Emancipatiin who don't jam to this (these) albums. I think these songs are better produced and more fully developed, and although it's more concise the album is still sprawling for a single disc.

The whole era is his most underloved and is colloquially known as 'the plastic era'. This obscures an era that is every bit the equal of his early 90s material imo and in some cases better I would argue.

The only album I like less than Emancipation is Rave. It's overproduced. It's also crassily trying to be commericial, which is bad enough, but it utterly fails to even achieve that goal. What's worse, Prince deserpately trying to make a radio hit, or Prince having no clue what was considered radio friendly at that time?

A song like Raspberry Beret is similarly designed, so I don't really hear anything about Rave that is much different, and it's certainly no more or less commercial than any of his other work, save for The Rainbow Children and his instrumental work. It's an album of some of his most personal songs.

You need the full maxi single for the true experience. The pure single mix track 1 of 1999: the new master uses samples in leiu of the new Chaka/Larry Graham overdubs.

Rave, TGRES, SFSP, Baby Knows, ILUBIDTUA, Strange But True are all brilliant songs.

They are all basically remakes of previous songs (even the title track which is just a remake of Kiss), but they're still great!
