Make an Album of Prince's NonHits

Imagine an alternative universe where Warner Bros releases Prince's NITS (Not Hits) instead of The Hits in 1993 because they dig Prince's eclecticness and going against the grain and would rather honour that than make loads of cash. So they want to showcase songs that a mainstream audience would not have heard ie mostly album cuts.

What songs would you have put on that release and what track list would you choose?

Rules

-Any song on Hits 1 and 2 is ineligible
-any song that had a chance to shine as a single is frowned upon unless you really think they were overlooked
+the Bsides are defo fair game.
-You can't use alternate versions as this is a celebration of released music.
+But you can edit songs down or extend them.

My Nits would go like this and would aim to showcase one song per album roughly speaking:

NITS 1
1.Starfish and Coffee
2. Joy in Repetition
3. Vicki Waiting
4. Anna Stesia
5.StroLlin
6. Love 2 the 9s (Edited without the raps)
7. Sometimes it Snows in April
8.She's Always in my Hair
9. How Come You. Don't Call me
10.Darling Nicki
11. Gotta Broken Heart Again
11. Power Fantastic

NITS 2
1. Private Joy
2. Ballad of Dorothy Parker
3.Lady Cab Driver
3.Dance On
4.The Beautiful Ones
5. Thunder (Edited to shorten the keyboards at the tail end)
6. Scandalous
7. Condition of the Heart.
8. 17 Days
9. Erotic City
10. And God Created Woman
11. I Love U In Me
12. Still Would Stand All Time

Pretty Awesome and varied double LP set if you ask me wink

I thought this was for songs that were singles but didn't really chart. I guess it would mostly be relegated to much of the singles of the 2000s.

Yes, I think he means album cuts, not singles that didn't chart.

And his premise is that this was being released in 1993 in leui of The Hits, so it could only have songs prior to 1993 (nothing from the 2000s).

Interesting. I didn't know that. They were not singles per se, though.

No, Anthology was a (poorly sequenced, in my opinion) collection of tracks from Prince from AFTER he left Warner Bros, up to (but not including) when he joined them again to release Plectrum Electrum/Art Official Age...

The OP's idea is to gather sort of an alternate The Hits collection, made up of great tracks that were not hits/singles, and covering Prince's early years, up until he left Warners.

Well that's not entirely true. "She Love Me 4 Me" was a hit in Japan.

The Beautiful Ones
Computer Blue

Condition of the Heart
Venus De Milo

I Love U in Me
The Question of U
Joy in Repetition
Willing and Able

It had some limited irplay in France.
I heard about Japan and also Last December about big airplay, but I never saw proofs of that, and it clearly didn't benefit to the album sales. I don't remember if it ranked or not in Japan, surely at the bottom of the top.

I never found any traces of neither She Loves Me 4 me and Last December in Japan.

Sometimes fans on the internet claim that sone obscure track has been a hit in "exotic" Countries such as Japan, Russia, but that's BS.

I also heard about MJ 's Is It Scary being a airplay hit in South Africa, and that was BS too.

I just checked, in fact it charted for 12 weeks and peaked at #3 on the Tokyo International radio charts.
That's not a physical single chart at all, concerns only Tokyo, and ignores national production.

That's great by the way, but it absolutely didn't impact the sales of the album at all ( which sold 55.000 copies).

Everlasting Now also charted at #87 at the time in that Tokyo chart.

At last someone actually has a go!

Your sequencing puts some similar tracks together in pairs (1999 and Graffiti Bridge cuts especially but also MDM2N and AGCW)

I'd mix it up a bit more but I do like the Hot Thing to Bob George sequencing: there's something in the beat and bass lines that is complementary...but in my alternate universe WB wasn't in the business of pissing Prince off in 1993 so would not have included any Black Album cuts. ...the one omission on my list is When 2 R In Love, which is the only way to get around this 😉.

I'm just saying it charted. And if it peaked at #3, I'd say that's a pretty good stat for a song about questioning a person's last remaining years on Earth and considering there wasn't a physical single. It's not like it's 1984 all over again.

In fact, it didn't impact charts of the album, because it wasn't released yet at the time.
Last December peaked on December of 2001 on this radio, but the album was available only one year after.

Surely these Tokyo guys are huge fans of Prince.

Everlasting Now being #87 also on December, means that sometimes, the two songs were played together!

Also The Work peaked at #31 in January of 2002, staying 12 weeks on this chart.

Yeah not bad for an album that was that allegedly wasn't even released. I seem to remember that album getting a staggered release schedule. It was kinda all over the place.

In France in the end of 2002/ early 2003 , there was a lot of promotion, tv and radio adds, huge press coverage... It sold only 25.000 copies there.

The single here was She Loves Me 4 Me.

I often wondered who payed for this.
