The W2A rollout and reaction has been an embarrassment for all parties involved

To start, I'm sick of these papers that wouldn't even give this guy the time of day while he was alive suddenly dropping to their knees and fawning over this record. Review after review is exposing nothing more than how ignorant nearly every one of these knuckleheads are when it comes to pretty much anything past 1989. This is unavoidable, perhaps, and something that was a problem in Prince's lifetime too, but it's still obnoxious.

I'm sick of the "fans" who are upset their precious 80s records aren't being released instead of this, the ones that wouldn't admit they like anything past Batman even for a million dollars. You're no better than these dumbass music journos and I don't know why you waste your time complaining about women who aren't Prince singing on a record. The majority of this guy's music is not from the 1980s, so get used to it! I think this release was godawful (read: the release, not the music itself) and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves, but it's not because this is a record from 2010. Some of the reactions I've seen from people are utterly meritless and speak more about them than the quality of the album itself. I'm all for negativity when something's bad, but at a certain point you're just deluding yourself because you want to be mad for no reason. Either that or these folks are too inarticulate to explain what they dislike about the music aside from "Why wasn't Evolsidog released instead of this?"

I'm sick of this estate going nearly a goddamn year between releases. I'm sick of the releases being "vault disc" grab bag bullshit that doesn't do the material any justice, or how about leaving a side blank on the LP version for the same artist they want to hype up as one of the most prolific in the world. I'm sick of them running around with their hair on fire with no plan whatsoever and I'm sick of people like Howe and Carter serving as psuedo con-men giving press runs acting like they ever gave a shit about this guy's music and doing nothing but spinning yarns, all the while actively ignoring the only people on earth who should be handling these releases and spitting in the face of the people that have trailblazed for years giving this guy's recording history the documentation and respect it deserves.

Felt like I needed to say it. This release has exposed the worst of the community and of the people who are running the show.

youre embarassed its gettting good reviews?

WTF/LOL

dont expect critics to be super prince fans like you. they listen to much more music than you do, most likely. and far beyond prince.

the reviews ive seen are actually wildly over enthusiastic, and therefore not that accurate, but i thought fans would love that stuff.

the vault curators are switching up eras because they dont want prince just to be seen as a heritage 80s act, i.e challenging the same people you say you hate cos they dont know prince post-batman. not sure what the beef is there.

To go through your points....

The music journalists can only respond to what they're given to listen to and, if to them this is the best thing they've heard since his 80's heyday then so be it-surely that's not a reason to be angry?

The 80's was and always will be his most successful period both creatively and commercially bar Diamonds and pearls.

Also, just because someone likes his 80s material more than what came after doesn't mean they can't still be a fan-You don't have to like everything!

In regards to the estate releasing only one lp a year well,Prince only released an lp a year so why the anger there?

It gives them time to compile it,remaster it,give it promotion etc and it also gives more chance of the rest of the public to be interested in it rather than if they were pumping out releases every 6 months.

At the end the estate doesn't owe anybody anything.

Imagine your inherit a house and other people start telling you what to do with it and get angry if you don't do what they say?

Uh, well, Prince's 80s material is genius level greatness. That opinion is shared by most people who follow Prince as fans -both casual and rabid- or just critics in general. That should mean something BUT I do get your angst. I've very much liked (not in love) some of his post80s albums like Symbol, Gold Exp, 3121, Planet Earth, HitNRun Phase 2.....and to my surprise I'm really starting to dig W2A........but compared to Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, Lovesexy? Not close. I think Prince lost it when he started following trends with D&P. Sure, it worked for awhile but Prince had his sound in the 80s because he was inspired and hungry. Almost all artists have a Top Tier era in their career and very few manage a second or third. Bob Dylan achieved it but Dylan has also release a ton of mediocre slop just like Prince did. Maybe Prince would have reached his second Top Tier period had he lived.

Flipside the estate isn't entitled to anybody's money.

If they want it, they have to work for it.

I think this is where you drop the mic.
Ancient Egyptians postulated 7 souls.
Top soul, and the first to leave at the moment of death, is Ren, the secret name...

Agreed. The SOTT and 1999 box sets were heavenly gifts and while I think the promotion and hype for this collection is overboard but what do I care. Not my money and I get some nice looking stuff to add to my music racks. The more of this stuff we buy, the more they'll put out.

Well if thereā€™s one thing Iā€™ve learned over the years, you canā€™t please everybody. I think this album is fantastic. I donā€™t expect to have another ā€œPurple Rainā€ or classic Prince album. Prince did something different in each release. I appreciate we have prince music that continues to come out. Iā€™m thankful for everything and anything. Because trust itā€™s better then nothing at all.

Agree. They did a great job with the classics (1999 and SOTT) and itĀ“s the right decision to release them first, and now are releasing a Ā“newĀ“ album from Prince. I only dont think Originals and Piano were that important to be released so soon (and they werent that careful with the artwork too)
