I've seen Prince a few times here in the UK, the lovesexy tour, D&P tour and nude tour, but I never saw anything like this W2A concert. I have had it for 2 days and I've watched it six times. Everything about it astounds me. I can't comment on the musicianship as I never played an instrument in my life, but I can't imagine this performance being matched anywhere by anyone. Just amazing. So warm and yet full on fierce. Prince's interaction with the girls pestering him showed a side of him I'd rarely seen. So full of joy watching this and yet a creeping sadness as well that this great showman is gone. Love, love, love it.

You prefer the W2A tour to Lovesexy, Nude and D&P?

I know, seems like insanity. But yes.

I'm not sure what the strategy is behind those "exclusive to overpriced boxsets DVDs and BluRays". It's obviously a way to get people to buy the whole boxset, but I think many will just happily get a pirate copy because they're gonna listen to the audio albums on streaming networks and, while they would gladly buy an individual DVD, BluRay or digital file of the show to have it in perfect quality, in a case like this, many will be satisfied with a lower quality pirate rip (and those pop up online the day after the boxset is released, so if you want them, you get them).

.

I can only hope that these shows will be rereleased individually in a few years, as in "y'all had the exclusivity for some time with your boxset, but now that 5/10 years have passed, it's time for the rest of the world to be able to buy it at a reasonable price".

.

+, Prince made a point of keeping most of his catalogue out of print in his lifetime, maybe the Estate doesn't need to continue this trend, and can make sure things remain available once the boxset's first print is OOP (it is the case with all the audio files, since -except for the odd 7" single- they're all available for digital purchase and streaming, so what's the matter with these video live shows?)

Can't agree more.

I know the estate is in the best possible position considering there wasn't already a remastering campaign in the 2000s (or ever).

I think this concert is incredible! From beginning to end, and even if other people are singing songs, Prince was very much bringing the energy on guitar.

Anyone notice the fact that he bookends the concert? The very first thing he says before he sings Joy in Repetition is "More than this there is nothing" at the very beginning.

Then I played it..& again..& again ....it's frickin brilliant. When you read 'play that funky music' & hollywood swingin' your reaction is meh...however on the DVD his versions are FIERCE!

Listen again. They're actually singing INGLEWOOD Swinging!

Full of special moments for me... For example, at one point he asks for his guitar to be turned up and the little thrilled laugh he gives when it kicks in is priceless.

It's not a coincidence. He is framing the concert with a concept. My interpreation is that it is his commentary on the whole party atmosphere and repeat nature of a tour, and his job ("I'm working here."). He said "There is nothing more than this." then sings "There is joy in repetition". then does the whole musical party concert as the "Prince" party beat perfomer, then comes back at the very end completely switching gears back into his "real" persona to sing "There is nothing more than this".

I also really like the Blue-Ray concert A LOT!

The concert is incredible like it is with all the girls singing, the band and yes with Renato!
Renato brought so much additional color and flavor to Prince's music, i always enjoy him playing the keys.

I have been to 13 concerts myself, i don't want to compare the W2A performance with all the others but i had a blast watching it twice in a row.

To me, the Blue Ray is the best thing from the whole W2A package, the album is nice to have but the concert a must have in my collection!

First, the sound and images are great.

The, the concert itself...

Yes the setlist was pretty good.

Prince looked good.

The editing and the filming is also good.

But it is not 'incredible' to me.

I was like most here very happy to see the show, and just to see Prince perform.

I was suprised he played that fantastic Roxy Music Cover, but it certainly is not better than the original.

-

I mostly compare Prince's concert's with his earlier career, and now I start to understand that it is wrong to do so.

He was so energetic back then up to 1988, and so wild and so far ahead in the pop and rock world.

Concerts he did from 1989 on, to me, are mostly just 'concerts' with little new or surpising elements.

He had achieved his best level of skilled muscian and dancer, performer etc.

But after that he started to trust on his hits and used a sort of automatic pilot to please heis audience.

Did he becoem to big ? I don't know, possibly...

There is a serious lack of improvasition. And with that i mean, Prince basically on stage thinking out loud what to do the next second. Nothing that much planned, just super happy and full of energy going for whatever crazy thing he wanted to do.

-

The reason why I watched the concert is just to check the level of ;

- the usual hits list

- ''clap your hands and stomp your feet' annoying chants

- the singalongs

- ''turn the houselights on'' demands

- people invinted on stage

- songs with background singers on lead vocals

- acoustic breaks

- cover songs

- any Larry on stage ? (lol)

- some dancing by Prince himself

- costume changes

- Prince only on guitar and keys (no drumming or bass)

- The Purple Rain chants

-

Well most of them were there.

Some good, some bad.

in 2010 Prince already left behind/ gave up the licking of his hands and hair, tearing up or opening his shirt, showing his bare chest, sexually teasing the audience, lying on the floor fucking a mic stand, etc. And that is understandable. They guy got older.

But I still miss the elements of surpise any concert pre 1989 had.

I don't know, the choices of songs, the arrangements (that used to be so refreshingly new even and still recognisable)... also the sound choices of his synths live are flat to me.

As are the unique Prince sound drum machine sounds. He sometimes adds a handclap to the drumming, and i can't help but think like how plastic/uninspired it sounds.

Every song though is perfectly played. Yes some guitar solos are amazingly good.

But overall, it is a concert that I was expecting, with the decades old use of the same tricks, and more or tles the same line up, show elements and encores, etc.

-

What also could be is that I've seen too many Prince concerts in my long life.

Or i'm spoiled to death, and can't be surprised anymore.

I completely have to disagree on these points.

In my opinion (and many others from people that i know), Prince has improved his guitar playing and especially his singing a lot with almost every year.

And with every year he got more songs to add to a concert and almost every concert was not like the one before. He always changed set lists, sure some concerts and tours had more or less hits included, but is it a fault to please his audience?

You talk about Concerts from 1989 on are mostly concerts with little new or suprising elements?

What about The Gold era with The UltimateLive Experience tour? THAT was unique!

The whole One Nite Alone tour with all the soundcheck access via NPGMC and aftershows and the jazzy touch also have been very unique to me.

Also the 3rd eye girl concerts with all the new versions of Let´s go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, Something In The Water, She´s Always In MY Hair etc etc

The Piano And the Mic tour also was unique.

A lot of unique special non hits concerts like Dakota and Montreux 2009 and so on and so on...

I don´t see nothing of an auto pilot...

Agreed. And I attended all of those tours with the exception of Piano and a Microphone.

For me, Prince was at his very best live from 1993 onwards. And there were plenty of surprising song choices in all of his later tours, particularly from 2002 onwards. No one night I saw of a concert was the same in terms of the setlist, even when I saw several from the same tour, the only exception being the 1998 NewPower Soul gigs, which were still great in terms of the performances themselves.

To me, something like the Purple Rain concert video, outside of "Irresistible Bitch / Possessed" and "I Would Die 4 U / Baby I"m a Star" doesn't function well or seem remarkable in terms of the arrangements, performance, and antics. It all falls flat or contrived. It felt boring to me when I first saw a VHS won by a friend from a radio contest before it was even released - EXCEPT for those two parts which are discipline. I do appreciate all the guitar antics on "Purple Rain" but around that it all seems like a vaudeville act.

But on this new concert even the energy and concept of including "Brown Skin" kept with a discipline of cohesive, slowly rising intensity. And his bookends of "More than this there is nothing." is that last cherry on top. I only noticed that he puts it at the beginning when I re-ran the concert.

I'm alway rolling my eyes at chants and such if they are just not working for me personally. But for whatever reason, in this concert, everything worked in just the right proportions; like a mutli-course meal prepared by a chef specifically with the fresh ingredients of the day. The band is solid, thick but funky. Mixing in the mic'd audience crowd call backs is better than I've heard before.

It could be a combo of things, even the entire day leading up to a viewing that factor into how a show hits you. I know that I've seen Prince shows on the same tour (Jam of the Year he kept circling around my neck of the woods, and I saw 3 shows and 3 after shows) and I would notice that out of three shows, one show really worked. The others fell flat in terms of a full sequence.

I feel like this particular show it all just came together, including random moments like the lady stalking him on stage: "I'm working here."

I completely have to disagree on these points.

In my opinion (and many others from people that i know), Prince has improved his guitar playing and especially his singing a lot with almost every year.

Prince has been a fantastic singer from the moment he recorded 'How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore' and sang 'International Lover' live for instance. He just always was a great singer.

Yes the guitar playing improved. But it went the up the 'perfect' way, and somehow lost the edgy... i don't know how to put it, but perfect isn't good to me. It's is just that; 'perfect'.

'Computer blue' long version, now that is guitar work i never ever heard him play again, just saying.

And with every year he got more songs to add to a concert

To be honest, he bascially never played songs from his new released album that he toured, come on; Jus ton, maybe two, three songs at best ?!

and almost every concert was not like the one before.

He always changed set lists, sure some concerts and tours had more or less hits included, but is it a fault to please his audience?

I do not agree. Sure his set lists changed, but the Hits were always there. That's a safe thing too, he has so many. But always little or no support of a new released album.

Think of Lovesexy shows or SOTT shows, or all the other albums before that... they excisted of the intire album in one live show, with encores of his previous written hits.

You talk about Concerts from 1989 on are mostly concerts with little new or suprising elements?

What about The Gold era with The UltimateLive Experience tour? THAT was unique!

You're right. True, and i've seen a lot of these shows.

He indeed got back on track. But left short afterwards again for the 'hitters 'n runners'.

The whole One Nite Alone tour with all the soundcheck access via NPGMC and aftershows and the jazzy touch also have been very unique to me.

Also True, i have to admid.

Also the 3rd eye girl concerts with all the new versions of Let´s go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, Something In The Water, She´s Always In MY Hair etc etc.

To me these were the worst 'wouldbe' hard-rock shows i've ever withnessed from Prince.

Not my thing At All! Sorry. smile Peace though.

The Piano And the Mic tour also was unique.

From the boots i've heard, i liked them too. But unfortunately the bad quality and electric piano sound could not convince me completely yet.

Prince had a way the last decades of using a very plastic sounding electric piano that differs quite a lot from a real piano sound (like, listen to HCYDCMA, or P&M '83 short album, and you know might understand I mean).

A lot of unique special non hits concerts like Dakota and Montreux 2009 and so on and so on...

...often filled with covers that created a low point in the excitement of the show (to me).

I don´t see nothing of an auto pilot...

Then you don't understand what I mean, but that's alright.

Peace still to all of us. smile

I really do appreciate and like these sort of conversations and personal feels about it all.

True... for thess specific group of live shows. He all of a sudden got big, and... had his head spinning, you know. The Revolution members questioned why all of a sudden there were so many people on the stage without knowing... just sayin'. I feel you on that one.

But on this new concert even the energy and concept of including "Brown Skin" kept with a discipline of cohesive, slowly rising intensity. And his bookends of "More than this there is nothing." is that last cherry on top. I only noticed that he puts it at the beginning when I re-ran the concert.

I do not agree on that cherry on the top. It is a very mediocre version. I ADORE Roxy Music.

Hard to touch high quality music that is so far away from Prince's. Not better, but so different and refined. Prince could never make an 'Avalon' album imho, although his piano album came pretty close.

I'm always rolling my eyes at chants and such if they are just not working for me personally. But for whatever reason, in this concert, everything worked in just the right proportions; like a mutli-course meal prepared by a chef specifically with the fresh ingredients of the day. The band is solid, thick but funky. Mixing in the mic'd audience crowd call backs is better than I've heard before

True.

It could be a combo of things, even the entire day leading up to a viewing that factor into how a show hits you. I agree smile .

For me, it was very nice to see a relatively new show being released on DVD. Prince is dead for five years now, and we haven't been able to see anything of his latest live work since then. Also that element had me longing to see this DVD.

But still, the feeling wasn' all that better after the last tiem I saw him perform with 3rdEyeGirl.

Sorry for that. smile

One thing is for sure, Prince damn looked good in that golden suit and high heels on stage.

And yes his confident guitar playing and singing remains unseen.

He still had that swag and all.

But the concert didn't 'stick' on me, and i can hardly think of what i saw that was 'incredible' or 'waw'.

Just happy to have seen it (once), and that's about it.

I guess my kinda Prince died quietly already much longer ago.

And I think i'm not alone in here.

First, the sound and images are great.

The.....

To me, something like the Purple Rain concert video, outside of "Irresistible Bitch / Possessed" and "I Would Die 4 U / Baby I"m a Star" doesn't function well or seem remarkable in terms of the arrangements, performance, and antics.

kinda agree.

It kind of died because it is rose tinted view of 80s, when at height of fame. He plays better here & this is probably a better show than the early 80s ones with revolution

It's all very personal, our points of view.

Glad to know and (still) hear - and I honestly mean it - that people here still love and adore his life after his fame. Let's say the last two decades.

I hope one day i can get to that level too.

I'm at least open to it.

I bought the cd; and bought the deluxe edition solely because I wanted to see the live perfrmance. Then I had to buy a blu-ray player which did not include the software to run it. Next had to find software and download it, which was great for about ten minutes until the audio quit.

So I spent way too much money and time for something I still can't watch. Very disappionted - I hope more of it becomes available on YouTube.

Must of bought a dodgy Blu-ray player. My player plays all DVDs and Blurays.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

He always changed set lists, sure some concerts and tours had more or less hits included, but is it a fault to please his audience?

Well, he did kind of frame a certain tour as "the last Hits tour" and then proceeded to do basically the same amount of Hits for all succeeding tours, though.

I bought the CD/Blu-ray from Japan and put the Blu-ray in my laptop to play. It’s then I realised it just plays DVDs! Still not got round to buying a Blu-ray player, might have to borrow my son’s Xbox but that’s easier said then done. To be honest, I’m not big on watching videos of concerts, I just want to hear the audio really.
There may or may not be something coming!

Im done wasting time and money on this. I think its mostly due to Apple updates. Everytime the system updatesIlose some piece of equipment (printers, scanners, etc). I don't have a TV and thus am out of luck, but this will be the last time i buy A deluxe edition. And I have paid for every bone of them to support the Estate
