Yes, none of my friends became Prince fans, but I was surprised when one of them told me he was watching the LA 2004 concert last Sunday (and I didnt send the link). The others only care about the hits and one or two occasional songs

Some ppl just have bad taste or grew up with bad taste family and friends. My Dad drilled me from birth with JB, Stevie, Motown, Stax, Al Green...Prince was a natural progression. Some ppl were given Paul Anka and Pat Boone during their formative years. 😂

The only person I ever tried to convert is my other half, but she has never liked anything beyond the hits.

Back in 2002 she begrudgingly agreed to come with me to the ONA tour, so I contacted Prince beforehand and asked if he could help me if I proposed to her at the NPGMC soundcheck. He agreed and asked us if we each had a favourite song. I picked 'She Loves Me 4 Me' because it was apy and I knew he would have no problem with a new song. I asked the other half what song she would most want to hear live and she said 'Little Red Corvette'. I lied and told him 'The Beautiful Ones'. You gotta read the room.

I like my friends as they are. Trying to convert people? When you're a certain age is just plain weird.

I have never failed in converting someone.

Also, never attempted to convert anyone either.

Back then, when Lovesexy came out, I used to play it really loud for my neighbours to hear. Not sure what the outcome was but they never complained even though they normally were rather difficult neighbours who knocked on our door if we ran the hot water tap after 10pm (boilers were a little noisier than they are now lol). I also took a work colleague along to several aftershows during the 21 Nights in London ; which he thoroughly enjoyed. He also started listening to Prince a lot - at least during that period. I generally don't tend to get along well with people who don't like Prince, but that won't necessarily mean that I get along with all Prince fans either!

None of my friends warmed to Prince.

SOme of my best friends worship at the alter of artists like Metallica, Rush, Zappa, Grateful Dead (ugh)...punk....Led Heads....No "enemies" here.

Motherfuckers that just can't feel the funk or what my man is laying down but I love them anyway.

And, let's face it, Prince can be challenging to like and/or be an acquired taste. His personality alone turned some people off. Often, it takes something like "The UNdertaker" or "Exodus"..."The Truth"..."ONA Piano"....to turn their a head or two. My former in-laws got tricked into liking "NEWS". Different strokes and all.

Funny thing is...even people I know that DO hate him always acknowledge how talented he was. He just doesn't float their boat and I aint trying to force it on them. I've never heard any of these people say that he was complete shit but somehow it just never clicked for them. That's OK.

Also, NOBODY likes having music, film or art forced on them. Myself included.

Think about it in your own life - when some friend you have keeps pushing a movie, album, band, TV show or whatever on you That You Just HAVE to Watch. Often, that pushiness has the opposite of the desired effect.

Yes, it´s true. But, at the same time, it´s kind of frustrating for me as a fan to see that most people dont know 5% of what he did, and these people love other artists that are worse than he was or geniuses too (in this case, I think ´if you can appreciate Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan, why not Prince?).

And I am glad when I discover an artist or movie based on recommendations from others. But the ´preachy´ thing is very boring and the reason why I stopped doing.

I always tried to show my friends Prince music according to their tastes. For the most pop ones, the hits and catchy songs. For the musicians, I usually showed stuff like NEWS or some of the 90s work with the NPG. But I admit it´s not easy to love Prince. His music has something ´weird´ for most people.

People used to give 'mixtapes' to their friends. It was a great way of discovering new artists.

That's how I became a Prince fan myself. Now there's Spotify playlists.

I remember in college that was the thing. Buy a 10 or 20 pack of cassettes and do high speed dubs with your friends when there was something u liked. The high speed dubbing boom boxes were the the shit.

Oh, for sure. I found the best way to do that is just to have something playing while we're driving or whatever. Something unexpected that makes them ask "who's this?"
