People used to give 'mixtapes' to their friends. It was a great way of discovering new artists.

That's how I became a Prince fan myself. Now there's Spotify playlists.

My first boyfriend used to make me tapes all the time. This was around 2003/2004 so tapes were kind of dead at that point but I discovered loads of new artists* that way. Bon Jovi, Mary J Blige, Barry White, Guns & Roses, George Clinton, Sly Stone etc. Of course, he'd try to sneak a few Prince songs on there but I'd skip those because I was sick of hearing about Prince at the time. Musicology was either just released or just about to be released and he was very excited and would talk about it endlessly. It drives me crazy thinking about what I did with those tapes. I know I wouldn't have thrown them out but I can't for the life of me remember where they are. It would be kind of cool to listen to them again now, almost 20 years later. Or introduce my daughter or little sister to some of that stuff. *Well, they were new to me at the time. [Edited 8/2/21 16:08pm]

I kept them all! (they're at my mum's in France though). I haven't heard them since the early nineties but would love to listen to them again. That friend who gave the tapes to me used to include a lot of Sheila E songs, Prince B sides, Al Green as well as many others things like Evelyn Champaign King and Luther Vandross, Alexander O'Neal, etc. He also sent me a very early copy of the Black Album on a tape - the sound quality was awful but it was really exciting to have. I really miss those times.

I’ve even failed at converting the person who converted me back to Prince after they gave up around D&P.

If someone asks me for a recommendation on something, I give them one. I don't try to convert people though because I sure as hell wouldn't let someone convert me into liking something I don't like.
