Have you ever failed at converting a friend to be a Prince fan?

I did but only once
A friend of mine said he was eager to get into Michael Jackson's music
He knew I was a major fan of his.I told him MJ music is great but Prince music has more variety
He told me he was into hard rock, grunge, metal music..he said his favorite guitarist was some dude named "Buckethead". He then requested just MJ hits..i thought there is no way he is gonna like the MJ hits of he prefers metal.A week goes by and he tells me he loves the MJ hits cd
So I then sent him a Non hits cd of Prince's most hard rock tracks like Endorphinmachine,Bambi, even let's go crazy reloaded
He said he didn't like it very much
To this day I am still amazed And puzzled that someone who likes grunge and metal prefers MJ over Prince.
2 notes to add-when I first told him about him prince,he first said "isn't be gay"? And he was impressed by the "while my guitar gently weeps* performance

Any of you have any stories of unsuccessfully converting your friends or family?

If his favorite guitarist was someone named "Buckethead" you probably had little chance of converting him anyway smile But nice try....

Why? Buckethead worked with Bootsy and Bernie Worrell and from them to Prince is only a small step.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

In truth, I've never really tried to convert anyone to being a Prince fan because I know how annoying that can be. My ex is a huge Prince fan. He used to try to get me to listen to all sorts of Prince music but I had no interest in it. And it bugged me that he'd keep trying. Obviously, after we broke up, I did start listening to Prince music but I'd rather find these things myself, not have them thrust upon me.

Having said that, I do play a lot of Prince music around the house these days and my husband is most definitely NOT a Prince fan. I don't try to convert him, it's more a case of me just bombarding him with it. I know he hates (most of) it but I don't care whether he likes it or not. He's going to hear it one way or another.

Yes, none of my friends became Prince fans, but I was surprised when one of them told me he was watching the LA 2004 concert last Sunday (and I didnt send the link). The others only care about the hits and one or two occasional songs

Some ppl just have bad taste or grew up with bad taste family and friends. My Dad drilled me from birth with JB, Stevie, Motown, Stax, Al Green...Prince was a natural progression. Some ppl were given Paul Anka and Pat Boone during their formative years. 😂

One of my oldest friends was always making fun of me since our high school days (80s) for liking Prince. He dogged everything he did without giving his music the slightest chance. Fast foward to the One Night Alone show back in the early 2000s and I had an extra ticket so he came with us and kept saying we was only going to get drunk and wait for it to be over...my other friends and I were like just wait. Well, he became a fan that night...dude went nuts and was dancing all over Everlasting Now of all songs. We were like eek eek eek lol After that night he dove in head first.

He just told me a few weeks ago that he pre-ordered Welcome 2 America. So there you go...

I've never tried. I'm not the proselytizing sort.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The only person I ever tried to convert is my other half, but she has never liked anything beyond the hits.

Back in 2002 she begrudgingly agreed to come with me to the ONA tour, so I contacted Prince beforehand and asked if he could help me if I proposed to her at the NPGMC soundcheck. He agreed and asked us if we each had a favourite song. I picked 'She Loves Me 4 Me' because it was apy and I knew he would have no problem with a new song. I asked the other half what song she would most want to hear live and she said 'Little Red Corvette'. I lied and told him 'The Beautiful Ones'. You gotta read the room.

Well, conversion wasn't my goal, but I did drag three friends to see Sign 'O' the Times. The movie we wanted to see was sold out, and I really wanted to see the Prince movie, of course, so the guys reluctantly agreed.

It didn't start off well, as my friends were white dudes, and one of them was obviously uncomfortable being the only ones in the crowd. A second one complained afterward that he thought the beat sounded similar through the whole movie. The third, a musician, said he liked some of the music.

None of them knew that it was a concert film. They thought it was gonna be like Purple Rain.

I felt a little bad, but they disappointed me.

I like my friends as they are. Trying to convert people? When you're a certain age is just plain weird.

Sounds like you're stuck into a "keep your enemies closer" kind of deal.
Or was it "with friends like these"?

Back then, when Lovesexy came out, I used to play it really loud for my neighbours to hear. Not sure what the outcome was but they never complained even though they normally were rather difficult neighbours who knocked on our door if we ran the hot water tap after 10pm (boilers were a little noisier than they are now lol). I also took a work colleague along to several aftershows during the 21 Nights in London ; which he thoroughly enjoyed. He also started listening to Prince a lot - at least during that period. I generally don't tend to get along well with people who don't like Prince, but that won't necessarily mean that I get along with all Prince fans either!

A stupid girl I’m no longer friends with liked the when doves cry cover from Romeo and Juliet, and when I tried to tell her it’s originally a prince song and it was popular, and that I was surprised someone our age doesn’t know it. Didn’t help her get into him, I guess cause I was a music snob that time

Nah...It's all good.

People like different shit.

SOme of my best friends worship at the alter of artists like Metallica, Rush, Zappa, Grateful Dead (ugh)...punk....Led Heads....No "enemies" here.

Motherfuckers that just can't feel the funk or what my man is laying down but I love them anyway.

And, let's face it, Prince can be challenging to like and/or be an acquired taste. His personality alone turned some people off. Often, it takes something like "The UNdertaker" or "Exodus"..."The Truth"..."ONA Piano"....to turn their a head or two. My former in-laws got tricked into liking "NEWS". Different strokes and all.

Funny thing is...even people I know that DO hate him always acknowledge how talented he was. He just doesn't float their boat and I aint trying to force it on them. I've never heard any of these people say that he was complete shit but somehow it just never clicked for them. That's OK.

I like anchovies, for instance.

Also, NOBODY likes having music, film or art forced on them. Myself included.

Think about it in your own life - when some friend you have keeps pushing a movie, album, band, TV show or whatever on you That You Just HAVE to Watch. Often, that pushiness has the opposite of the desired effect.

Yes, it´s true. But, at the same time, it´s kind of frustrating for me as a fan to see that most people dont know 5% of what he did, and these people love other artists that are worse than he was or geniuses too (in this case, I think ´if you can appreciate Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan, why not Prince?).

.

And I am glad when I discover an artist or movie based on recommendations from others. But the ´preachy´ thing is very boring and the reason why I stopped doing.

.

I always tried to show my friends Prince music according to their tastes. For the most pop ones, the hits and catchy songs. For the musicians, I usually showed stuff like NEWS or some of the 90s work with the NPG. But I admit it´s not easy to love Prince. His music has something ´weird´ for most people.

People used to give 'mixtapes' to their friends. It was a great way of discovering new artists.

That's how I became a Prince fan myself. Now there's Spotify playlists.

^^^Oh, definitely^^^

I remember in college that was the thing. Buy a 10 or 20 pack of cassettes and do high speed dubs with your friends when there was something u liked. The high speed dubbing boom boxes were the the shit.

Oh, for sure. I found the best way to do that is just to have something playing while we're driving or whatever. Something unexpected that makes them ask "who's this?"

My first boyfriend used to make me tapes all the time. This was around 2003/2004 so tapes were kind of dead at that point but I discovered loads of new artists* that way. Bon Jovi, Mary J Blige, Barry White, Guns & Roses, George Clinton, Sly Stone etc. Of course, he'd try to sneak a few Prince songs on there but I'd skip those because I was sick of hearing about Prince at the time. Musicology was either just released or just about to be released and he was very excited and would talk about it endlessly.

It drives me crazy thinking about what I did with those tapes. I know I wouldn't have thrown them out but I can't for the life of me remember where they are. It would be kind of cool to listen to them again now, almost 20 years later. Or introduce my daughter or little sister to some of that stuff.

*Well, they were new to me at the time.
