Bruh this is one of those songs that sounds like he wrote it in his sleep…. And in that category , this is lower in the list… definitely not top shelf of that category……

That "Oh hot summer" sounds like something preloaded on some midlevel Roland synth. This song is definitely time stamped by that sample pack. Don't love the song. It could earworm its way into a road trip play. Definitely nothing I'd share with others. It be's like that sometimes.

- W2A song is good, Born2Die is absolutely excellent, but have to say I'm not really liking Hot Summer, yet, but maybe it'll grow on me. All just my opinion of course. Looking forward to the album.-

John Mayer drops an entire album with a huge 80s vibe and he’s hailed as an innovator. An actual 80s rock star drops one track that if had it been released in 83 would have charted easily. Hmmmmm I guess…. I love it for what it is. [Edited 7/24/21 17:04pm] 1 over Jordan...the greatest since

lazy, cheap and uninspired. Weird that it's been rereleased, especially as they must know no one liked it the first time around. It's the type of song/music that was the antithesis of Prince back in his prime. The type of music i loathed and mocked and made me a prince fan in the first place.

I think the problem with all these songs is the lazy uninspired chorus. The hook is embarrassing. The music itself on all these tracks is good, sometimes great and so is the verse, but there’s no real hook. That worked on songs like A Love Bizarre and Dance Electric where the groove was so strong, the hook was in the music and didn’t need a strong chorus. But this sounds more like Life of the Party and a couple of others where he’s trying too hard for a catchy chorus and ends up with something bland. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

master said: It's a good song. He edged his bets, saying he thought it was gonna be an hot summer. But he got it right again. This Welcome 2 America album was ahead of it's time. He's speaking about the present from the past . Genius from beyond the grave. [Edited 7/17/21 10:12am] Two of the three released tracks are Curtis Mayfield “influenced”. Just because Prince says something is futuristic doesn’t make it true.

It has that same pop throwaway quality as No More Candy 4 U and Everybody Loves Me. Third year running, P couldn't help himself! But the live version shines so there is that. The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

I actually prefer those two as they feel intentionally juvenile for a bit of fun. Hot Summer seems to take itself seriously. Cringe. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

If Prince was making music like this in the 80's, none of us would've be here today and prince would have never been famous.

Framing people who dislike a song as "haters" is pretty reduductive, why are you "hating" on people not liking one song? . . By which I mean, I'm a Hot Summer Hater™ because the song is thin, weak, boring, flat and low effort, and he's already done a bunch of these thin, weak, boring, flat and low effort songs in and around the same period and they all sucked too. . Hope that was 'hater' enough for ya!

He gave that to The Bangles though. Plus Manic Monday -although not a personal favorite of mine- is a much catchier and better executed song than Hot Summer. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

It’s kind of got the same tempo and everything. Singers are a bit perkier, gives it a brighter feel, and I’d say the production on Manic is better. But they are both ear worms. 1 over Jordan...the greatest since

Hope that was 'hater' enough for ya! I was referring to people who hated the song Hot Summer. I didn't ask why do haters hate hot summer. I just wondered why this particular song got so much flak. Personally I hate Let's Have a Baby but I never see that song criticized. I'm not suggesting Hating one song in particular makes you a Hater

It's repetitive and shallow, but I don't hate it. If it started at the 1:40 mark it would be way more enjoyable.

I dont hate it (actually I enjoy it), but, when you think it was chosen as a single....I remember George Michael saying Prince didnt edit himself. It´s a nice song, but not on Prince´s level of greatness. . On the other hand, I loved ´Born 2 die´. Nothing revolutionary, but good song with good lyrics, production and vibe.
