I have to agree with you here to a certain extent. By the time we reached the mid-nineties for sure Prince was no longer 'cool' and 'in the Zeitgeist' like he was in the mid-80's. He started following trends instead of setting them. I was often embarrased by his looks, his antics and a lot of the music that came out in the 90's. He was no longer leading the pack and although I still was a fan, I would certainly not play a new Prince album when friends came over to chill at my place. I would listen to his new albums alone, and maybe dig 2 or 3 tracks at most.

A lot of Prince's music and the production of it sounded embarrassing to me at that time. I much prefered styles like house, techno, triphop, drum & bass, big beat etc. during the 90's. In all truth I guess the pop format was played out for me in the 90's and I favored the forefront of electronic music and the whole lifestyle that came with that scene.

I really don't think Prince in the 90s took a dive in quality, considering the amount of output. I like a lot of a dance music, Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, The Prodigy and creme de la creme The Orb.

But Prince was never really going to do electronic dance music. He did hiphop really well in my opinion, tonnes more funky music, more great ballads, and a lot of R'n'B which you could argue was derivative, but still sounded relevant, if not always essential.

1984-1995, slight cheat as the Gold Experience infamously sat on the shelf for a bit.

But, 1999 aside (album not year), that’s his truly greatest period bracketed within just a tad over one decade. If he was on the slide after 1988, he still didn’t meet or even glimpse anyone else on the way down until after 1994.

I prefer the old org question....his golden era....which is 80-90 and 92-96
