Stand Up and B Strong versus Stand Up and Be Strong

Not sure what I feel about the P version, didn't really grab me but intrigued me enough to listen to the original.

I've never been a big Soul Asylum fan (find them overblown and humourlessly self-important), but I actually liked their version, definitely better than the Prince one, which is hard to listen to afterwards.

I think I enjoyed the SA one because of the Prince one. The powerful delivery suits the song way better and it's weird coz P can belt out a song when he wants to and could maybe have torn this to shreds, but the pop-gospel singalong style is way weaker for this. His guitar solo's good but not one of his more amazing ones.

Anyone else listened to them back to back? What did you think?

I loved Stand Up and B, from the first listen. Hadn't heard the original, but like you, thought I'd seek it out and give it a listen. Found it to be very much a standard little grunge track, with not much going for it. For me, Prince took it to another level.

I'd be interested to hear the rumoured rock version that Prince has in the vault.

RIP sad

Remember the "Runaway Train" (Soul Asylum) vs "Holy River" controversy?

Strange that this happened years later.

The first boot I got was, Welcome 2 The Beautiful Experience. At the start of the last track, None of your Business, he calls out Soul Asylum, I get the impression they were there.

Hadn't heard about another studio version--my thought on listening to P's version (I checked out the Soul Asylum before Prince's) was that it might have taken off a bit more in live performance. Too bad that didn't ever happen.

I'd never heard the original until recently, as Soul Asylum aren't my cup of tea, so no surprise I prefer P's version.

.

After hearing pre-release this was a cover and it wasn't all P on vocals I didn't have much hope for it but it's probably my favourite song on the album.

.

I love the shared vocals, the guitar and organ and the lyrics are both powerful and moving to me. The 'taking too many pills' and 'stand up and be strong, find another song' seem so fitting looking back now.

Prince allegedly ripped off "Runaway Train". Probably unconsiously.

Just listen to the two songs back to back.

I've been listening to both songs since the '90s and still now I can not find similarities... And I love them both! My first purchased CD ever was The Gold Experience, the second one was Grave Dance Union by Soul Asylum...

Both still in my heart. biggrin

Supposedly, they have the same pace, song structure/chord relationship, and similar melody to the lead vocal.

The version on Welcome 2 America has a similar feel to me as the live version of Still Would Stand All Time from the Trojan Horse aftershow. I like it.

As this version seems to be a live rehearsal, I’m wondering if the clicks and faults are because it was recorded to tape originally and that had the audio errors, then it went onto the CD-R. Possibly there is no better source for it, so better to have it than not.

Anything with Prince, Sonny T and Michael B as a trio is worth listening to, so let’s hope the other version gets a release (perhaps as a B-side to this as continued promotion for W2A).

One final thought, as this is a cover, I wonder if this was just a place holder on the configuration on the CD-Rs that were “found”. Is it possible Prince intended to replace it with something with a similar feel to it, but never did as he moved onto something else. Are other configurations of the album known by anyone, even if by Morris Hayes?
There may or may not be something coming!

Good point.
Why not Rich Friends and other tracks from the era included in the hyper expensive deluxe set?

I m so disappointed this song to be a cover, because it s by far the best song on the album.

From the first lines though, I thought it was too well written for 2010 Prince. Then I read it wasn't his song, then why do it?

It certainly is frustrating to have a 4th empty side of vinyl especially after listening to everyone on the podcast say how amazingly prolific he was during this era. That said, I appreciate that this is an album and he had a vision and suite of songs for it. Still......... biggrin

Maybe he recorded it because the lyrics struck a cord with him.
I don't know why it would disappoint you though that he didn't write the lyrics. If it's good and you like it why should that matter

The original is corny to me. Prince’s is corny too, it would work well in an animated movie where the little hero needs to summon up their courage.

I agree, it’s such a beautiful song in Prince’s rendering. (I had never heard the original before and didn’t like it all now). It starts off a bit too meekly but when it gathers pace and becomes all gospel… It really moves me.

Indeed.

Or as the intro to a Tony Robbins presentation or at a political Convention.

It’s a song that could only be performed with a straight face by an American artist.

If you look closely he did change some of the lyrics to spin it more as his own so there is that...for example the original does not have the line "when they lie to your face put them in their place", etc. There are a few other lines changed as well...
