I agree that the connection between Prince and MJ is tenuous and doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

But they'll forever be lumped together for being fairly effeminate black artists who were plastered all over MTV and shit and were selling records by the boat load at the same time. I get why people do it (people even do it on this board) but I never thought the comparisons held water either beyond superficial elements. I think being black had a lot to do with it to be honest. I don't remember a ton of comparisons between Elton John and Bowie for example - two gay/bisexual chart toppers with a penchant for androgyny - but, unfortunately, being a "black" artist is a category all itself for stupid reasons.

Beyond some of Prince's pop efforts, I never found them all that similar.

I still think the painting is cute though.

It's just plain simple.

Michael wrote great songs. Sold loads adn loads, and was longer in the business than Prince.

Extremely poppy Michael, no rock god, dispite the leather and chains.

Prince wrote thousands of songs, and fantastic hits too, and just kicked off early eighties,

wore high heels and female clothes and make up.

Yep, Prince sold a lot, just not like Michael did.

Michael wanted to be understood.

Prince never wanted to be understood.

But both loved mysteries.

Only Prince was soooooo much more than a popstar.

Prince never was a posterboy.

In every sense of the word he was music.

Michael was just a huge popstar.

Prince was the personification of sex with a fancy rock 'n funk.

Michael was an incertain full grown child with a golden voice and crowned himself as king.

I took a look again at these images.

They are such big oposite extremes, that it becomes silly humorous.

Rediculourly humorous even.

And the fact both were black has little to do with the comparison.

As does the eighties where they both come from.

The press created the dispute and the fights. They both appreciated eachother professionaly and probably personally as well.

I was just writing about how a large percentage of people view them and the lens they use to do it. I'm with you and think they're more different than similar. I know a lot of casual fans (or non fans) of both that sort of kind of lump them together. It happens on this very board quite a lot. The Chris Rock bit about "who won", etc.

It is what it is. But I think their connection is cemented for better or worse.

Bill Sienkiewicz is a legend in illustration work. So cool that he made a Prince art, although this one is far from his best work.

Agree. Most of what I see is cheap, corny copies of photographs. In this thread, most of it is tasteless, but I m here to see the occasional cool stuff, not expecting much.

Do you think most Prince art is cheap corn or tastless?

I started this thread, because I noticed a lot of Prince art was basically 'corny copies of photographs'

There is some good representations, but 1/10 stands out as far as an artist trying to express 'Prince', like the Andy Warhol

I do like certain 'watercolor' like representions. I think those are staples.

Some that are just photo copy likes of Prince with a bunch of meaningless or non connected imagery don't work for me

Unfortunately, most Prince art I saw over the years is corny or photo copies, but this thread actually brought some real cool artwork. Even an Egyptian-like Prince that I loved. Congratulations for this thread because it contains all kinds of Prince art.

I know what you mean. It was actually made in 2014, a hand screen print limited to a run of 70 for an art gallery. Its a real head turner in the flesh.

This image is a 2019 redraw, but I own a 2015 hand drawn original. Spencer's hand produces stunning results. I can see why Prince loved his work.
