He was a real macho motherfucker though.

Wouldn't want to be in fight with him.

Chicano Heroes Become Aztec Gods: The Art of Jorge Garza

Jorge Garza (aka Qetza)

The art of Jorge Garza (aka Qetza) pays homage to the Aztec art style via his illustrations. His illustrations adopt the sharp angles, vivid colors, and mythical icon focus of Aztec style. However, his illustrations do not depict the Aztec gods of the past, but instead Qetza has applied these stylistic features to the “gods” of our modern pop culture.

One “god” that Qetza has honored and revived in the Aztec style is the beloved cumbia queen Selena Quintanilla. Her image is one that is loved by Latinos everywhere and Qetza’s spin on the classic purple jumpsuit is one that iconizes her in a way that honors her god-like place in the hearts of Latinos. Qetza’s illustration depicts Selena squatting in the classical Aztec position with arms extended and prone.

However, instead of holding a weapon like the Aztec gods of old, she is holding the microphone that she used to slay the cumbia music scene of the 90s. Her purple jumpsuit, bright red lipstick, and striking black hair are presented in an angular and color-rich approach that mimics the icons of the Aztec gods.

This East Bay artist turns coffee into portraits of Prince
Jarold Cadion makes portraits of celebrities like Prince and Frida Kahlo using coffee.

Everyone’s spilled coffee before, but unlike most people who are only inspired to grab a napkin, East Bay artist Jarold Cadion saw it as a Eureka moment that led him down a new artistic path.

One morning eight years ago while he was working a “paper-pushing” job in New York City, the stain patterns on his paper coffee cup inspired him to begin using coffee as a medium (see his art in the slideshow above). He’d already been creating watercolor portraits of celebrities, but found this to be more versatile.

“With watercolors, you get one shot, but with coffee you can sort of manipulate it after you put it on the paper,” says Caldion. “You can still reactivate it. The reason I really like using it is the staining properties and how it blooms in certain spots. It leaves a certain effect, and I like how that happens naturally.”

Although he was initially inspired by a simple spill, Cadion’s no longer just using regular brewed coffee. He places coarsely ground, dark roast beans in a jar with vodka and lets the mixture sit for a month to develop a molasses-like texture. Then he’ll dilute it depending on the tones he wants to achieve.

Yep. I think it's (all) art.

Art is in your head. It's what can you make of it, if you want to and if you are willing.

If it's good it'll shake and disturb your daily routine, feel, and look at things.

''Art Should Disturb The Comfortable And Comfort The Disturbed.''

Also, weird art is a ticket towards reality.

Sure I have opinions that are very specific.

But not to put in words. Certainly not her, not now.

I'm a contemporary artist myself (I'm on instagram, YOWANVICTOR)

That might explain some.

LOL

Meh.

I'm a difficult person when it comes to art.

For me personally it isn't 'dirty' enough. wink

But let's say if I passed it on the streets, i surely would make a picture of it,

just like i'm saving it now in a folder of Prince stuff. wink))

^^^Lemme fix the aspect ratio on this one.^^^

Also, really cool posts on this page. I like the ones that you can't immediately identify from the photos they came from. It's next to impossible to do a portrait of Prince without photo reference but it's cooler when artists make something new out of it.

They like both Prince and Michael Jackson, strongly associate them with each other and may be gay?

I thought they were kind of cute and funny.
