Love that benefit show recording. The Computer Blue from that gig ROCKS SO HARD. I always thought the story went that the show was the foundation for some of the songs but a lot of the parts were re-recorded or overdubbed. So the finished product is a combination of both the live tracks and Prince doing the Prince thing. Idk, that's what I remember, but it's been so long since I've read anything new about it.

Here's what Tudahl's book says about the Sept 13/83 studio session (1pm - 12:30am):

.

"Now that he had wrapped up work on 'Baby I'm a Star', Prince refocused on the title track. For the first time since mid-August, he began adding overdubs to the song. For seven hours he corrected mistakes he heard in the live mix, including rerecording parts of his own solo, which were probably overdubbed during this session. "Prince knows what he wants," explained Peggy McCreary. "Any leader of a band does." Prince was ruthless with anything he felt could be made better, and like he'd done with 'Baby I'm a Star', and other songs from the live August benefit show, he replaced parts recorded by the band members with his own."

Is this implying that on all 3 "live" tracks he completely replaced all the Revolution tracks (i.e. none of the keys or drums or bass are from the show?) or that he just fixed the mistakes?

Do you have Tudahl's book? Because there is too much to reproduce here. Prince spent hours and hours in the studio fixing, overdubbing and rerecording. I would think that some of the band's playing is still on there, but it is not the live First Avenue performance -- does it sound like it?

.

Baby I'm a Star:

"After a dinner break he added another 2 hours of synth overdubs to replace various parts of the performances of Lisa Coleman and Matt Fink. "I think that he thought he could do it best," explains Fink, "and that musically he felt like he could get what he wanted because he could do it himself. He would always know what he would like because he knew he could do it. I'd say it was the control aspect. Having complete control. That was one thing Prince always had to have. I know that."

I do but I have to find it. I moved since I bought it smile

That makes sense esp on Baby I'm A Star cuz the synth vamps at the end have never sounded the same live as they do on the record.

The guitar solo, and the vocal are from the First Avenue show, at the very least .

The key word is "parts". I know the solo is edited. But it's obviously from the show. There's exact matching feed back. The vocal is edited, but I definitely think it's the entire live vocal.

This entire interivew is a joke.

  • She starts saying the piano in the room is the piano used on Purple Rain. Purple Rain was recorded in the live mobile truck at 1st Ave; only the string overdubs were done later at Sunset.

  • She wrote Glam Life and Manic Monday???? Songs that were recorded in FULL (and we have the files) before she came on the scene? Yeah.

  • She wrote the "Spanish" lyrics to Mia Bocca? Which are in Italian???? And no, she's not conusing with with In A SPanish Villa, because her story about the Mexican restaurant is basically her trying to re-tell the real story that Jill has told about theym calling an Italian restaurant when they were working on Mia Bocca.

Any real Prince fan can see the obvious bullshit throughout.

Wait, we have the Vanity 6 version of Manic Monday?? I only knew a few elites had a *good* copy of the A6 version that was almost released!

According to Brenda Bennett, Manic Monday was a Vanity 6 song. When Vanity left, Prince gave the demo with her vocals to apple to overdub. I think some folks need to realize that just because we don't have a bootleg or copy of something, doesn't mean it never existed. Prince recorded all the time -- Dylan sometime wrote on toilet paper. Brenda was there. Regardless, apple never co-wrote the song -- didn't even pay for her studio time.

[Edited 6/6/21 12:47pm]

Yes, I'm aware of all that; I'm specifically asking about the highlighted portion of the quote including, "(and we have the files)" that GaryMF posted.

I didn't mean to be that specific. I was still in shock at hearing Apples say she "wrote" Glamorous Life!!!

I was probably thinking about the fact that we have the Prince demos of Glam Life with his vocals (the leak and then the Originals version) and I've heard the Appollonia version of Manic Monday but when I typed this I might have been thinking it was sung by Vanity. I don't have a Prince only version of Manic Monday.

I love how she pulls out a purple notebook and says "look here's the pages that are ripped out that are where I wrote it!" and even the pages before and after the "ripped out ones" are all BLANK!!!!

Sheila needs to slap her across the face 1 time, but she's stayed above the fray since the Lemon Cake scandal.

I've also been thinking about the interview some more. While I think that Patty is sincere in her beliefs and what she says.. it just emphasises that Prince was a manipulator. There have been several people that believe that they inspired/co-wrote songs. Probably not least because that's what Prince told them. He was basically bigging them up. Made them feel talented as fuck.

.

At the same time, he did take inspiration from any and everything around them, so the stories, phrases and words that people used/told came back in what he wrote.

.

In this case, it seems like Patty believed some white lies Prince told her and probably misremembered some other things. I'm sure the Mia Bocca lyrics story is about In A Spanish Villa (I wish I could get an instrumental version of that song!)

.

There's a long history of conflicting stories about songs from the Prince camp, not least from Prince himself. I guess he thought it helped the mystique and I'm sure it wasn't bad to keep people motivated if they felt more ownership of whatever project Prince had them be the face of.

It's not. because Jill told the story about writing the ITALIAN lyrics and calling an Italian restaurant for Mia Bocca. She's just copying the story and not getting it right at that.

Apples...just doesn't seem very bright. I used to think she was at least sweet, but then she went in like an asshole on Sheila during Lemon Cake-gate. Sorry Apples, but calling anyone "he-she" is just fucking rude.

Remember, Apples also is the one who apparently doesn't even know the sound of her own voice, as she had no idea until like 2017 that Lisa Coleman made Take Me With U somewhat listenable.

I like Apollonia.

Is she lying ?

I like Sheila.

Is Sheila lying ?

I like all the protegees.

Are they all lying?

Yes, sure.

No, Not exactly certain.

Probably and possibly the biggest liars in the center of it all was lil' Princy himself.

But that's beside the question right now.

Lemme say this;

People who constantly spray and use words like 'truth', and 'the truth' (all the time) have an agenda.

If not two or more.

One doesn't need the word truth to be used to put strenght on what they are saying.

It's as simple as that.

-

Apollonia seems ok. Do i believe her ?

I just believe her as much as Prince mysteries.

And that's pretty doubtfull.

wink

She totally looks like a Prince girl, and their interaction at the beginning of Insatiable doesn't look manufactured. However, since Apollonia has proven herself to be a story embellisher, to the point of straight up lying, we now have to take everything she says with a grain of salt. But I could totally see it.

I just watched this interview. I have to say, she's very credible. I think I'm most surprised at her friendship w/ Prince for so long, and their interactions. The girl brought notes! She wasn't playin'. The fact that she brought the little book Prince bought for her, and we saw the torn pages of her lyrics or poems that he used in the songs... that's a cool artifact. I wonder if those are still lurking around somewhere.

A lot of those lyrics, like, "...standing in the section marked 'if you have to ask you can't afford it' lingerie" makes more sense. There's a story behind them now. Same with her take on schmundy and "fun-day" from "Manic Monday." Those are very random bits about which to make up a story.

I never knew she dated David Lee Roth (probably because I just never kept up w/ her story over time). I feel like maybe I knew she hung out with JFK JR, but I can't be sure. She's led a very interesting life. While she's not out there winning Oscars or Golden Globes, she's been in the business a long time.

I love that she stated, "I'm outside, smoking weed with Robert Mitchum!" Mitchum was such a bad boy (and fucking sexy as hell).

When I made a post about Perceived Feuds, this is one of them. I never thought Prince & Apollonia were feuding. I just didn't think they were friends or much kept in touch after the film.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I agree. Regardless of whether some of her claims maybe untrue or embellished, I get the impression she had genuine love and affection for Prince during his life and really cared about him. That’s enough for me. He needed people like that more than anything else.

I had the same reaction. When I think about him in the house alone, and who he could have called (if he wasn't trying to be alone, of course) she is one of the few I can even see recognizing a serious moment and doing the right thing, just by judging how she talks about him. I usually feel the opposite, with every interview people give, and I typically think "well they loved him, but I get why he wasn't reaching out to that person". I say this knowing full well she'd had contact with him towards the end and didn't do anything either. But you can tell she at least loved him as a person.
