You are claiming that Prince had nothing to do but keep Apple entertained in the studio -- Peggy McCreary who was actually an important person in the studio would disagree.

You're putting words into two people's mouths with that.

Can you even admit Apples was in the studio with Prince? How far does this go?

And the idea Prince's copyright credits told the full story in that era is nonsense.

Apple going on about 'Smunday' on this program when the song was already written is nonsense. I don't need to admit anything - Brenda Bennett and Jesse Johnson have already spoken on it. Apollonia was handed a ready tape to overdub her vocal -- she was not handed a 'sketch'. And once again, you don't get to assign yourself credit for an artist's published work.

.

Prince wouldn't have been the only one who found Vanity glamorous - he did put her on the cover of Rolling Stone with him, instead of his band. Who do you think styled V6?

.

I also don't think the lead actor in Last Dragon has lost his mind in claiming that he chose Vanity to be his co-star. Not exactly supporting Apple's claims either. Are you familiar with Sony and Cher, Desi and Lucy? They were married couples who were artistic partners for years, had their own successful shows. Apple compares herself to these couples in her relationship with Prince. So clearly some will go to any length.

There is a Pattern with those songs and Ladies. I think prince pulled songs from the vault for reuse also to woe the ladies sometimes. They feel connected To these songs and I can understand why.

What? I have no idea what this is in response to but it pretty much sums up what happens in any topic involving Vanity even peripherally. You even brought up the Last Dragon? LOL

We're talking about the possibility Prince used some expressions or lines of poetry from someone else in his circle that he was working with. Why does this induce freak outs to think Prince borrowed and was influenced from people he was around? Ripping out pages from the book and all that, I don't know, but it's not like he didn't change lyrics or record with scratch lyrics too.

I will say, in a couple interviews Jill (who has been catty about her) also implied tat Prince took care of Apple here and there over the years.

I didn't bring up Last Dragon -- Apple did. Prince put quite a lot into Vanity's career, Apple was hired to replace her character for the film.

.

Prince didn't hand Apple sketches to apply her poetry or come up with song titles -- she received the completed song to over dub her voice, like Paul Peterson received a cassette with the fully formed 'Nothing Compares 2 U' to replace Prince's vocal. Brenda is also on the released Bangles version of Manic Monday, so not sure why her claims about the song being written by Prince (not Apple) should be dismissed.

.

Who do you think styled V6? Do you notice any similarity to A6? But Apple would like to give herself credit for styling Prince and bringing glamour to Minnesota?

.

Here is some glamour for you:

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/princes-hot-rock-the-secret-life-of-americas-sexiest-one-man-band-67501/

.

It is nice that Prince took care of Apple here and there -- she wasn't married to him, and she wasn't his creative partner like Sonny was to Cher. He also didn't give her rights to his intellectual property.

.

Louis Wells, Prince's ‘...times.com)

Despite his decades long career with Earth, Wind & Fire, Wells is widely associated with Prince’s “Purple Rain,” which he worked on with his longtime collaborator Vaughn Terry and the costume designer Marie France. While Earth, Wind & Fire’s Egyptian and spiritualism-inspired identity was inherited by Wells and Terry, Prince had not established his on-stage persona. After Earth, Wind & Fire’s management (Bob Cavallo, Joe Ruffalo, and Steve Fargnoli) started representing Prince, they tapped Wells and Terry. “They said, ‘Go work with the kid. He’s going to be someone big.’ Begrudgingly, we went with that...

.

Taking over from a local seamstress — the sister of Prince’s bass player André Cymone — Wells and Terry were at that time transitioning from groups with “very cartoony imagery” to more stylish statements, Terry said. Their six-year run with Prince helped to define his international influence. “I would say we influenced the world of fashion with Prince. You would characterize Prince’s influence with the ruffle shirt, the purple trenchcoat, the fitted pants with the shearing up the side, the diagonal fly with the big, 20-mm. buttons, certainly the leather jacket with the scarf with the tassels and the motorcycle,” Terry said. “Even now, we’re still using it. I do storyboard references at Coach [where he freelances] pulling out Prince pictures. It’s still influencing fashion tremendously.”

Besides all the quarels and doubts here...

Drew, the interviewer said something interesting (at least to me) at the very beginning.

That (a guy named) 'Matthew Betone' (or something like that) was there a few weeks ago, listening to tracks for the Re-issues. He even played the piano track only of 'Purple Rain', 'while they both were looking at the piano in the studio...'

I don't know who he is, does anyone of you know ?

This gives me that tiny bit of hope.

Yes I know there's a SDE coming with W2A, but that should be in the can right now for production reasons, if i'm not mistaken.

Are they possibly working on a another (re)release for the end of the year ?

I might dream, can I?

I had to go to the full interview to even figure out what you're even talking about.

Apples is saying she was originally cast, and in a diva moment, Vanity called Barry Gordy and stole the Last Dragon from her, as a tit for tat. That's hilarious, and I hope it happened. Apples sounds like she admires it.

Pretty sure it was you who already linked to a LipstickAlley post by accident before changing it to a direct link. The Vanity discussion there is so touchy, and catty that it may explain exactly what's going on here because nobody is even slighting Vanity in the first place. Prince had other women in his life he played off and liked both romantically and professionally. Deal with it.

Nobody dissmised Brenda's claims or said Prince didn't write the song either. Saying both can be true shouldn't be too much nuance.

I don't know what you're referencing with the costumes or glamour, but I'm not sure if Prince was doing fur until Purple Rain. He definitely did borrow actual clothes and style from the women in his life.

Aw okay, you didn't even listen to the whole interview. Yes, she'd like to take credit for Prince's world class design and styling team, amid everything else. There is nothing more catty than claiming you were offered the lead role that Vanity is most known for -- she is conveniently deceased. And this is simply not true -- unless you are suggesting that we take granny apple's word over the lead in the film. I didn't link any Lipstick Alley post, and not sure how that would even be relevant regarding the content of discussion.

.

She also has no claim on Prince's intellectual property -- we don't even need Brenda or Jesse's testimony to know that. If she had a career of her own that anyone cared about (other than perhaps yourself), over and above her 15 minutes with Prince, she wouldn't have to be pulling such stunts.

I didn't have a problem with any of the claims she was making about having written songs or whatever, but The points Moody is making on this thread have me reconsidering now.

I thought she seemed off for other reasons. Primarily the stuff about Shelia E.

She was the one that freaked out on Shelia E. on her own facebook page, and the the thing she freaked out about was Shelia saying that she used to make Lemon Cakes for Prince on occassion. That was the conflict according to Apollonia. Shelia E., to her credit, hasn't acknowledged or responded to any of the drama that Apples started.

In the interview she's asked "What is the beef between you and Shelia E.?", and she says something like "I guess she just has a problem with the fact that I wrote Glamorous Life."

Now, Shelia has never publicly called out Apples for anything as far as I'm aware. She hasn't acknowledged the Facebook posts where Apollonia talks shit, nor the resultant press that magnified her post for months afterward. All this conflict is one sided, and it's over wether Shelia baked a cake or not. Petty.

You guys, Apollonia is toxic as hell. She's working out 35 year old beefs over petty bullshit. Trying to get late period vengeance over who knows what.

I find it really tacky.

Kudos to Shelia for staying out of it.

Yes, unlike Applesauce Sheila has a highly respected career at the top of her field... She spent years on Prince's stage, did 3 albums with him that nothing to do with apple, was his musical director and top soloist for the SOTT tour -- what would Lovesexy have been without Sheila? Prince's honoring at the Grammy's on the 4th anniversary of his death turning into lemon cake gate speaks volumes.

.

Here is the lyric sheet she purchased to pass off as her own for the Foxla interview:

Did anyone from Prince's camp side with Sheila E. during that whole Lemon Cake, Purple Rain Cruise stuff?

Apples was doing to much with that, but they all seemed to back her in their own way.

Last Dragon wasn't like some masterpiece.

Yeah it's relevant that you did really edit the original LipstcikAlley link, because it's the same nonsense happening here where Vanity is placed on a pedestal, a topic that isn't really about her is treated like it's about her and an afront to her, and then every woman who got within sniffing distance of Prince is attacked, with a pecking order.

It's also off topic.

She's not claiming Prince's copyright, even if she's claiming to have contributed. My guess is there's some grain of truth in there.

Has anyone in Prince's inner circle not claimed to have helped create his hit songs at this point? It would take time to think of one.

You don't find it weird that apple would claim she was offered the lead to Last Dragon, while making up some nonsense to shade Vanity? And you are complaining about Lipstick Alley? And her claim clearly isn't true. Whether or not Last Dragon is a masterpiece is irrelevant. You sound too desperate.

.

Anyone who comes out and claims they should be credited for his work does not get to be taken at face value. Nobody will be getting their 50% writing credit for When Doves Cry, I Feel for You, Nothing Compares 2 U, The Beautiful Ones, Sign of the Times...etc. Claiming applesauce should get a 50% writing credit for Glamorous Life is nonsense. Prince was a musician's musician -- Miles Davis and Maceo Parker called him a genius. And hopefully fans will recall that iconic 1999 Triple Threat Tour, which Vanity was an important part of -- hence why Jesse would be speaking about her at all.

.

And sure, Sheila is a top shelf musician with a longstanding career, highly respected in the music industry with her own legion of fans. So sounds like a simple case of jealousy. Because there is really no other explanation for pretending that she isn't relevant or trying to boycott one of his longstanding musicians. Anyone who thinks a public outcry over lemon cake should take precedence over Prince's life being honored at the Grammy's cannot be taken seriously as a fan. I had the pleasure of seeing Morris and Sheila doing a joint concert after Prince passed -- I doubt he has any issue with her... too busy with his own music.

It's plausible Apple was cast in Last Dragon. It would make sense coming off Purple Rain, instead of Vanity who had only done B movies. Vanity had the workng relationship with Motown so it's certaily a possibility but also possible they would have just cast her and it was always inteded as a vehicle for her. We don't know.

Apples went on to do Falcon Crest which was big, but nothing really impressive ...Vanity went on to get other films including Action Jackson.

Yeah, people here are totally saying she deserves 50% credit... Are you okay? Calling her "applesauce" says everything.

You really felt the need to cite Miles Davis opinion of Prince? Like his genius is in question here? What does the triple threat tour have to do with any of this? It's getting weirder and weirder.

I hate to disappoint, but Purple Rain was also a B movie. Can we agree that Vanity and Taimak Guarriello were actually cast as leads in Last Dragon? Why should we discredit Taimak?

.

Taimak Guarriello Talks V... - Essence

ESSENCE.COM: While you were many women’s object of desire your leading lady Vanity had a legion of male fans. Were you one of them?

.

TAIMAK: (Laughs) Of course! Who didn’t love Vanity? I was 19; my boys were like, “You’re the man.” In fact, I picked Vanity. During the callbacks for her role there were several women there and Berry Gordy pulled me aside in a room and asked me which one would I want to play the role, and I was like, “I pick that one!”

....

I have to admit though that apple's story is quite a bit more colorful -- Vanity discovers when dining with apple that she was cast for the lead in the film so V excuses herself to use the restaurant phone -- she immediately gets the head of Motown on the line and starts yelling so loud that apple is embarrassed. And V ends up with the lead. Wow, what a powerhouse.

.

Did you listen to the interview? Apple claims she is entitled to 50%. Are you okay?

Applesauce, lemon cake... what is the difference? She called Sheila much worse, so relax a wee bit.

....

I guess we all have different definitions of weird. Here's mine:

.

Prince: I need for you to write a story in Spanish
Apple: Okay
Apple: So years later, I approach my sis Jill Jones... You know Mia Bocca?
Jill: Yeah
Apple: Those Spanish lyrics - I wrote those.
Jill: Hmm... Because Prince told me that he got the lyrics when he called a Mexican restaurant.
Apple: I'm the Mexican restaurant.
.
Mia Bocca:
'Tu vuole la mia bocca' - means 'you want my mouth' in Italian.

How much money it made at the end of the day is irrelevant -- Purple Rain was a B movie. Prince was a remarkable individual -- financed Purple Rain from his own pocket -- never acted a day in his life. All the more incredulous that anyone would give applesauce's nonsense the time of day.

I might dream, can I?

sounds a lot like

Thank you so much !

I looked to find some info :

The guy indeed has some serious collectables.

Could it be him in Sunset Sound ?

Why would he listen to Prince's music there for an upcoming release ?

Is he involved (for the artwork) ?

Distributed by Warner Brothers and grosses $72M worldwide.

Soundtrack is certified 13x's platinum.

Wins an Oscar.

Added to th Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Am I talking about Purple Rain, or Tanya's Island?

I wonder what Miles Davis would say.

This is silly.

How much money it made at the end of the day is irrelevant -- Purple Rain was a B movie. Prince was a remarkable individual -- financed Purple Rain from his own pocket -- never acted a day in his life. All the more incredulous that anyone would give applesauce's nonsense the time of day.

I think it may have started as a B-movie but at some point in production it morphed into something bigger. Aside from some stilted acting scenes there's little B-movie about it. It transcends its limitations through sheer force of will, something Prince never achieved on film again. It's the only Prince movie a non-fan could actually sit through and enjoy.

I thought this the most interesting part of the whole thing too, although I presumed it meant they were in the early stages of prepping a Purple Rain 40th Anniversary SDE...

Maybe she did have a dream of kissing Valentino

Prince is rumored to have nicknamed his dong Valentino. I thought it was him trying to make a lady say something nasty without her knowing. You know, like the asshole he often was.

entire interview:

After watching the entire interview.......I have 2 say the she is 100% believable.

[Edited 5/29/21 21:09pm]

.

I believed her at first, but then she started taking credit for writing half of Prince's songs and designing Sheila E's entire look, and everything else.

.

Not to mention all the other hit songs that Appolonia wrote for herself, in her solo career, and for other artists. There must have been 100 of them.

.

And she sounded very catty, laughing at Sheila for wearing lingerie instage. At least she didn't show her titties to the entire world, on film. (And I love that scene (and those boobs), so nothing wrong with it, but just sayig....)

It was always a B film - which doesn't mean 'bad'. Al Magnoli had just graduated from film school, Prince and Bob Cavallo financed it, nobody had acted -- Warner's eventually bought the film from Prince and Bob Cavallo, but this doesn't mean it was no longer a B film. The film was great and did very well, that isn't the issue.

You just described an independent/arthouse film.

A b movie means it was meant to be the second film in a double feature. They're exploitation films more often than not.

I mean, she put out solo records and was credit for writing. 2 singles were top 20 dance hits (I'm surprised too).

She's credited with writing lyrics for Prince songs. On of them is in Spanish. One of them is shared with Sheila.

Prince was generous with credits but there was usually some rhyme and reason.

Might be some truth even if she's overplaying it.
