Ranked and rated:

Raspberry Beret: 9.7
America: 9.6
Paisley Park: 9.4
Condition of the Heart: 9.2
The Ladder: 9.1
Pop Life: 8.5
Tamborine: 7.9
Temptation: 6.2
Around the World in a Day: 4.3

"Around the World in a Day" is my least favorite Prince song from the 80s, by quite some distance.

Rating songs effectively out of 100 is fun? funny, doesn't make any sense, is not worth a hill of beans, and is probably the result of a bad dream. And some music critic once mused that the middle eight in Around the World in a Day proved P had to be genius. So maybe it's not the worst P song from the 80s. But each to their own.

"Temptation" is terrible.I remember one critic saying it sounds like "a bad acid trip." biggrin

I've definitely gone back n' forth with the song. I get the grindy-bluesy slow burn of it. But I always felt it was maybe a bit too slow. It's not just gritty and dirty, it's like one of those prisoners who writes their manifesto on a jail wall with their own poop. I think "Darling Nikki" comes across better as a dirty gritty number than "Temptation." It feels like a rockabilly 45rpm playing at 33 1/3 or 16.

That said, it's still a fun number. I would love to hear a tighter, slightly more upbeat version. Once I edited out the ending, it feels slightly stronger.

You can speed up the track a bit.

There's easy software out there that makes it possible, without changing the 'tone'.

And that faster version you sent is near perfection. It's a bop!

1. Temptation (Easily the best. Stunning vocal performance showcasing Prince's range)
2. Around the World in a Day
3. America (Could have been a little longer)

4. Paisley Park
5. Pop Life
6. Raspberry Beret (Never understood why this was such a popular song, but it's not bad)
7. Tamborine
8. Condition of the Heart (Great beginning. Starts to go downhill half way through)
9. The Ladder (Just dull)

Around the World in a Day

Prince reused the beat on Glam Slam

I love this one from the start. Loved the background story, love the other renditions. Anthemic. Purple Music

Paisley Park (extended) I wish this one opened on the album as on the long version.

As always I keep being amazed how the individual rankings/ratings differ on this forum. Prince was a very diverse artist and as a result the purple army is also a very diverse bunch.

Here is my list:

1. Condition Of The Heart (masterpiece)

2. Around The World In A Day (love it)

3. Paisley Park (love it)

4. Pop Life (love it)

5. Tamborine (like it a lot)

6. Raspberry Beret (like it)

7. Temptation (sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it)

8. The Ladder (alright)

9. America (boring, repetitive, bad political message)

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I didn’t say the title track was the worst of the 80s, just my least favorite. I’d never presume that my opinion represented anything more than my own enjoyment. Happy that the song exists as a lot of people love it. Just not me.

The Ladder - I'm surprised that it's so low on quite a few of your lists. Just curious... for those that don't care for this song, what are your opinions on some of the live versions? I love this song; and felt it was extra special live.

ATWIAD seems a massively devisive album. One persons favourite is another persons worst. I think the album did what it supposed to do.

What a wonderfully weird album.

1) Paisley Park

2) America

3) Raspberry Beret

4) Tamborine

5) Pop Life

6) Condition of The Heart

7) Around The World In A Day

8) The Ladder

9) Temptation

There's a version of The Ladder on the Lovesexy rehearsal footage with just Prince and a piano which is absolutely amazing. I find the studio version a bit overproduced. Much better stripped down.

I can't rate or rank the songs. This is one of those albums I take as a whole, from start to finish, because I like everything on it. It's my favorite for taking a walk around my neighborhood because it lasts exactly three miles. (Sort of like Parade lasts exactly the length of the drive from Dodgeville to Spring Green, Wisconsin - which was a spring ritual I did every year for 20 years at my last job.)

If pressed, I'd say Condition of the Heart is my favorite song on the album, but that's as far as I'll go.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
