rolling stone's list of 25 essential prince songs https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/25-essential-prince-songs-72097/
this is well written, even if the word funk is used in places im not sure it belongs. when you were mine is influenced by james brown? really?
and the last 3 songs are boring inclusions. TMBGITW? zzz. should/could have been dolphin or dinner with delores or eye hate u. black sweat? zzz. should have been breakdown or way back home. 7? zzz. why not money dont matter tonight, sweet baby or dark?

Rolling Stone magazine has ALWAYS been clueless when it comes to music made by Americans of African descent, and also clueless about the artists that make that music.

It's a list of hit songs, not deep cuts.

By "As much Blondie as it is James Brown" I think they're trying to say "sounds more like Blondie than James Brown, who would be a more obvious influence on a young funk and rnb singer in 1980." Badly worded though. Anway, yeah, I wouldn't argue any of them aren't essential but he has at least 50 essential songs.

except theyre not totally clueless in this case, just a bit off base at times.
but its def a pop/rock prince list. i.e. crossover hits.
if i did a 25 essential funk/soul/rnb prince list it would be quite different, though many of the same songs would be there, cos prince mixed it up most of the time.
