Better change the title to "When 2 R In Love," before Bart jumps on your jock and rides you like a horny pony.
As to the song, while it was recorded for The Black Album it fits so well on Lovesexy, an arguably lighter-toned album. I'm sure many babies were created during that song.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

I think I'm all alone in hating this song. It fits ok on Lovesexy but grinds TBA to a fucking halt. I don't see what's so different about this song from the hundred other slow ballads he wrote. |

For me, there are a good handful of his ballads that are great, and then there are some that are specific to that era and just belong there. Like - "Do Me, Baby" still sounds modern in many ways. Yet "Slow Love," sounds like an 80s song. "The Beautiful Ones" invades any decade or year and fucks up the listener in ways they weren't expecting. "Insatiable" is like - okay then. But then "Scandalous" makes everyone wet. Yet "When 2 R In Love" sounds out of place anywhere else but one Lovesexy. It doesn't always bode well on compilations.
For me, it's not his strongest ballad. Not his worse, not bad, very much part of Princestory. But if I had a top 10, it may just miss the list.

That's about how I feel about it. I don't HATE it and it works great on Lovesexy as a tempo switch, like you said, but Prince writes these ballads in his sleep and, to me, a lot of them really sound the same.
Then again, his ballads aint really my thing and when that's the case, a person has a tendency to think that "all that stuff sounds the same" as if it were fair music criticism. Like, if you don't like country, classical or rap the typical derogatory observation is that "it all sounds the same" - so I acknowledge being guilty of that and it probably says more about me as a listener than it does the music. But, hey, all I got is my ears. I'm not a musician.
But songs like "Damn U", "I Hate U", "Dreamin About U", "Scandalous", "The Beautiful Ones", "The One" and a few others have something that makes them stand out to my ears. Not this one though.
I like a lot of ballads btw. Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Fiona Apple, Aretha, ..."Overjoyed" by Stevie Wonder is one of my favorite songs...so it's not just me hating slow "ooo, baby" music. I just find Prince's template to be often repetitive.

I'm not too sure it was recorded for any particular album, but I confess to not knowing much about what drove Prince to actually release TBA or what went into that process. Did he conceptualize TBA during the SOTT sessions like he so often did with records? Who knows. |

Yeah, I mostly agree with you both. When 2 R In Love works much better on Lovesexy than on TBA. Insatiable felt like Scandalous Part 2 and all the slow jams he made after that are just more of the same although some of them are still good. The thing is, we heard When 2 R In Love before we heard all the other ones, so back then it was still fresh! [Edited 4/23/21 9:37am]If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am. |

I just love the atmosphere and subtle chord changes in the song (and vocal layers. Also the Harp sound sets it apart from his other Ballads - Barring The One!) - as well as the romantic/sexual power that Prince was so good at. Great song IMHO! works better on Lovesexy. [Edited 4/24/21 4:06am] |

I didn't like the song so much when I first heard it in the context of TBA. It just didn't really fit the flow of that album. In the context of Lovesexy it fitted better and I found some more appreciation for the song. Over the yeras I have warmed up to it more and more and now I really like the song. It's got a great beat and the lyrics are pretty cool. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time... |
