Lovesexy The Album (Not Just The Song)

IN my opinion this album is the epitome of what made Prince so special. The artist that created this masterpiece followed no trend, wasn't limited by any religion, was free from all bondage physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This is where Prince delivered his mission statement like Bruce Springsteen did with "Darkness On the Edge Of Town". Like Bruce with "Darkness" this album represents what Prince was doing it for.

The album was really special to me because I learned to appreciate his music by learning the Prince album through a friend. On cassette. I felt like a music conusseur by getting a cassette copy of Lovesexy to learn on my own.
Does it count if I had the cassette and not the album? Previously I owned the Purple Rain album and the Parade albums.

I find it unsatisfying. Still an 8/10 for me, but it feels like Prince arrived at the destination when I was more interested in the journey.

My favorite album.

I will sometimes resequence to replace Glam Slam with Escape. I like Glam Slam, but sometimes I'm more in the mood for Escape and the song fits great there.

it's the album that stopped me being a fan and made me look at his music critically. I still don't like the album, although there are some strong songs on it. The preaching is atrocious, the tour was the type of scripted mess that was so against what I liked about him, which, I guess irked him as well, as he really started to do aftershow often, not being able to musically stretch much during the regular show.

.

It's a divisive album....

.

Once again, the first single sounded nothing like the album, like Kiss did with Parade and the song, is, again like Kiss, a simple blues as far as chord changes go. But this time, he kept the bass and, dayum, I'm grateful for that!

Your opinions are wrong lol

I don't think it's divisive. Rainbow Children is divisive

CAL3

As a concept, a loose narrative combined with a healthy dose of stream of consciousness, a thematically-cohesive statement, a start-to-finish fully-immersive headtrip of an album... one that deepens upon repeated listenings... especially through a pair of good headphones...

.

It is second to none in the Prince discography.

.

My personal opinion, song-for-song, Purple Rain is unbeatable in the sense that every single track can be pulled off, isolated, and still work completely on its own (whereas I like some of Lovesexy's tunes mostly within the context of the full album). PR, as well as others including 1999 and Sign, are also far stronger as zeitgeist-capturing experiences.

.

But Lovesexy, as a whole, is THE masterpiece of among the many towering achievements in the Prince body of work. Not a wasted moment. And so richly detailed, I have never tired of it after all thes years.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

At least Rainbow Children had his best music in a long time on it, Lovesexy follows albums that are all better than it, even Controversy... cool

The preaching on this album is tolerable. It's positive and inclusive, not putting down non-believers, and it's vague and ambiguous, so that a listener can take whatever message they want from it... in other words, the opposite of the preaching on Rainbow Children! (For the record, I love the Rainbow Children. I'm just pointing out that for those people who were turned off by the preaching in Rainbow Children, Lovesexy's lyrics should be far more tolerable.)

Though I do agree with you that the Lovesexy tour was over-produced and over-choreographed. It lacked spontaneity and improvisation.

Yes. Like Parade, can listen all the way through. Never tired of those two albums. I will admit to sometimes skipping Dance On. Bought a tracked copy for that very reason. lol

Absolutely! If you listen carefully, the drum beat constantly changes it's pattern. Guarantee when you actually hear the changes, you will look at Dance On in a different light.

True. It's hiccupy. You have to be in right mood for it. Besides it's hard to dance [on] when you're hiccupping.

The album is great. I wouldn't change the tracklisting, although I do love the extended musical section of Glam Slam on the 12".

You can do that edit in Lovesexy SDE... (coming up real soon now?)

I can list the albums wink

To me, indeed, Lovesexy is the first album that doesn't hold up. Sure, on the Black album, things derail with 2 Nigs, but the rest of the material is strong. On Lovesexy, the production simply hurts my ears and it is extra obvious the moment When 2 R In Love comes on. It's a totally different soundscape. It doesn't fit. There's other problem points, like Dance On and also a yet again totally different sound on Alphabet Street. There's weak songs like Glam Slam and the tape problem (I think) at the start of Anna Stesia. It's a hastily cobbled together mess of an album.

.

Case in point... Eye Know.. listen to the way it builds up over the different takes that are out there. It's fun and funky and breathes, until there's the glossy spraypaint thrown over it that just suffocates it.

.

Anyway, it's not all bad and, as evidenced in the thread, there's plenty of people that love it front to back. My opinion is just one.

If The Black Album had been released as plans, it would have been a downgrade from SOTT. I feel slightly the same way about ATWIAD . . . it's a great album, but of course following Purple Rain it's nowhere near as good.

I love the themes and sounds of Lovesexy.
