The Prince song inspired by Cocteau Twins

I'm surprised at P's modesty saying he would never do anything like Cocteau Twins. Pile more layers of sound into TicTacToe or Love Thy Will Be Done and you've got dream pop. Layer it thicker still with a heavier beat and you got shoegaze. The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!
If you can add value to someone's life then why not. Especially if it colors their days...

I seem to remember that around the time of Parade he was listening to them. No doubt someone will put me right.

I honestly had no idea he actually said Tictactoe was inspired by them but I can see it. Always liked that tune on an otherwise really uneven album.

Yes, he was a fan of them back in the 80s. The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

I like the Cocteau Twins, came to them through another artist. Would not have linked tic tac toe to the Cocteau twins but I can see it. It also harkens to some of the softer ballads of the sixties. Tic tac toe and another love were always two of my favorites on that album.

I think I read somewhere that it was W & L who got him into the Cocteau Twins. With the greatest of respect tho, I bet they had a good laugh when the PP offer came thru. Stablemates with Tony Lemans, Dale Bozzio, and Jill Jones? No thanks.

if you like prince, what would be some good CT songs or an album to check out?

It's funny the articles says "Love...Thy Will Be Done" was "compared" to the Cocteau Twins' song "Fifty-Fifty Clown". Isn't there literally a sample of "Fifty-Fifty Clown" running through L...TWBD? It was a little bit more than influenced by them and there's more than a comparison there.
But it did show how Prince could take their sound and make it more commercial.

Pre Manchester Maine Road concert in 1990, he played a song by the Cocteau's, can't remember which one though..Turned out he was a big fan. Check out the album Treasure if you want a treat... Or my favourite single..Love's Easy Tears... [Edited 4/6/21 2:51am]

Cool, I didn’t know this. I remember in the 80s they used to play this band on NY’s new wave radio station. I looked them up to see if I remembered any of their songs, but I didn’t. I do hear the same beginning notes in ‘Fifty Fifty Clown’ and ‘Love thy Will be Done’.

Prince was doing the heavenly ethereal sound in 1978 on For You: (2) For You - YouTube
Cockteau Twins' 1982 debut album Garlands: (2) Cocteau Twins - Blood... - YouTube
But I do love CT from Treasure (1984).

a bit of a silly article. No doubt perhaps he liked them back in the day but I dont hear them in Tictactoe at all.
Check out Heaven or Las Vegas or Carolyn's Fingers. Elizabeth Fraser is a unique singer and the airy dreamy music is beautiful.
I hear it more on "Love thy will...' and maybe "Imersion" on Bria's album comes close? [Edited 4/12/21 6:05am]
