I believe it would've, and should've, been a better opening track than " No." I can hear him shouting "Welcome 2 the new power generation!" at the beginning, rather than the "rain is wet..." stuff on " No," which should've been an opener for side 2.
One of the P&B crew suggested this, too, but someone else countered that starting with the strongest, most energetic song could make everything else that comes after it sound weak in comparison. It's better to have the song later in the sequence because everything is building toward it. It's the perfect climax for the album.

I had no idea this song was so well loved. When I stated this thread I assumed the responses would be mixed, as they are for most songs (we Prince fans have a very wide range of tastes). But it looks like there is literally only one person so far who's said they don't think the song is all that great.

I do agree with others that Lovesexy is one of his best...All of the different aspects make it have a real magical quality. |

Hope so.
I would hope so, too, but I can't see them issuing Lovesexy SDE any time in the near future. It's a shame because it's my favorite album.

That I would want to hear. Isn't there a glimpse of it being mixed in that Paisley Park doc video?
I am dying to hear the original version of the song too, before he quickly remade it for the album version.
There's something about the album version that doesn't do much for me. i like the lyrics, and the craziness at the end... but not the arrangement. |

The arrangement is the best part. That's what makes the song.

When I hear 1999, Lovesexy, and Fury back to back, I hear a certain similar musical idea in the heavy slow motion lead line keyboard intro. With Lovesexy there's something heavy and clockwork about all the patterns that doesn't have that bounce to my ears. Fury the studio version also has a flatness to it.
But 1999 has energy and bounce.
For religious joy, the sound of Eye Know or The Line really capture energy for me.

^^I agree^^...When I first heard the song "Lovesexy", the tempo, energy and synth-horn stabs reminded me a lot of the song "1999". Great song from a great album. |

Take a listen to "Higher Than High" from Tony LeMans Paisley Park album.
Which is a great album if you haven't heard it, I recommend it.
https://www.youtube.com/w...aze6TfBqw0
That's the Lovesexy refrain. Wikipedia says that track had Sly Stone input. Released in 1989. I wonder which track was written first.

The best song on the album to me. I always favored Princes uptempo experimental productions with crazy vocals and climaxes. I feel that is why I even fell in lobe with his music.
The loud boisterous horn stabs and crazy midsection. Its a wild ride I am always holding a ticket 4. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records. |

And the title song is so unbelievably fucking great, with all the layers... unearthly unique!

I wonder if there is an extended version in the vault?!
To me this song screams for a three times longer version.
With all these layers and melodies on top of each other... it is worth a (re)MIX at least.
Love to have all these seperate tracks, please release them.
I can dream on, right ?

There is a remix. You could hear pats of it in a lovesexy documentary |

besides...actual loveseats dont "swivel"...and you cant swivel in or on one... he's clearly talking about a sexual act. and distorting the vocals to give it ambiguity...a tactic Prince used several times throughout his recording career |

he follows it by saying "you want me to write my name on your walls...dont you baby" as she moans and makes sex noises... just like people write their name in the snow while peeing, he's talking symbolically about writing his name in her anal walls with his urine...very nasty, but very Prince...again, listen on vinyl if you can and slow it down...go back and forth on the word (like a hiphop DJ on the scratch) ...he's clearly saying swiddle...its a sexual slang term used predominantly by older black people and in black pornography back in the day...remember, he himself said he first learned about sex by reading his mother's porn novels |

Going with you there for the sake of consideration, why anal and piss rather than vaginal and come?
He seemed to be more interested in the latter. He never titled an album Piss or a song named Anal Contorl. |

It's a real standout and would have made a great single IMO. Also a real highlight of the live set.
I've posted this before but regarding the lyric "leaves my name upon my thigh", if you have a cassette version of the Lovesexy, take out the sleeve and hold it up to the light so u can see thru it. Perfectly superimposed over Prince's left thigh is the . In the credits, you'll notice that : Prince.
It fits too perfectly to be an accident. |

Uhhh....no lol
It's a reference to Alphabet Street where a known technique for giving cunnilingus is to write the alphabet with your tounge (this works btw). He's saying "write my name on your walls" by spelling "Prince" with his tounge on her vagina.

that has nothing to do with swiddle or swivel in a loveseat...its two totally separate songs and two separate sets of lyrics...i promise im not gonna go back and forth with the same old usual RJ antagonists...you can think and hear what you want to...im done with it...the proof is in the vinyl. |

That's some presecution complex complex you have there. If you post here a lot and feel picked on too much, perhaps the problem is....your posting? And not everyone else?
Sugar WALLS is a different song too but the reference is the same. This isn't complicated. Prince is NOT talking about pissing up a woman's asshole on this title track.
Jesus Christ. |

I've always heard "U want me to swim in your love sea."
"swiddle" in yo' love seat from the Urban Dictionary: Swiddle The act of urinating into the rectum during anal intercourse. I was having a nice butt f**** with my wife and I thought I was almost there and I wound up swiddleing all inside her anus
This is preposterous. Prince sang about a lot of freaky sexual things throughout his career, but he never sang about pissing into a girl's asshole. There's no chance that's what this lyric says or means.
Also, each lyric in this part of the song is a euphemism. "You want me to walk right down your hall..." "You want me to write my name on your walls..." So why would be so explicit in that one and only sentence and use a verb to mean urinating in an anus?
Cleary he is being consistent and using a euphemism. Granted, "Swivel in your loveseat" is a bit weird. I always thought it was "Swim in your love sea" which I interpreted to mean cunnilngus.

i'm usually an RJOrion defender except when he's going on about prince's dna or some shit, but there's no way there's a line in this song about urinating into a woman's anus. |
