did singing in falsetto limit princes appeal?

Many ppl, esp white rock fans, do not like falsetto

But that has always been a part of male singers in rnb and gospel

So I guess that might have been just his singing preference but its also his way of keeping some rnb in his music even when it was a song like when u were mine

But I do think yeah, if he really wanted to get a bigger audience, I'd have had done less of that maybe

He obv knew it as on purple rain theres less falsetto
Same on Atwiad
Also parade
Sott too

Prince was quoted in early years as saying that singing in a lower register hurt his voice. I'm guessing age and practice allowed him to sing in (what I consider) his normal "Prince" voice.

If there is such a thing . . . his voice and vocal range were outstanding.

A lot of his everlasting hits outside of "Kiss" were sung in a middle range of vocal. But that Kiss vocal cemented any satire of him presented in falsetto.

His falsetto put him on the map in the early years and also cemented his superstardom with the number one smash Kiss .. in both cases his falsetto broadened his fan base

He started to hit bigger with "Controversy" "Little Red Corvette""1999""Delirious"

Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Raspberry Beret, Pop Life, Girls and Boys (I used to hear that on top 40 radio and sung by peeps in the halls), Sign 0' The Times, U Got the Look, Batdance, Alphabet St, Thieves in the Temple, Cream, Get Off, Diamonds and Pearls....

Kiss seems to be his only falsetto mainstream hit am I forgetting something?

I do remember some guys in high school making fun of the falsetto, and they didn't make fun of When Doves Cry.

If you look at the 90's, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World was almost entirely falsetto and was a pretty big hit for him in that era as well.

Yes.
I have many friends who disliked Prince JUST because of that.
Fans of rock, hip hop... I remember the performance of Facedown at Chris Rock, when I show it to so some of my friends who liked hip hop, they really liked it until he did his falsetto " Hee hee".

It clearly prevented many of my friends to take Prince seriously.
For us, singing in falsetto wasn't singing, whereas objectively it shows he has many ranges in his voice.
.

His gimmick vocals are what prevented many people to take Prince seriously, just like Michael Jackson.

Most people prefer sober singing, such as David Bowie for instance.
It made me wonder if some songs weren't wasted by his gimmick vocals. Sometimes he surely did too much.

TMBGIT was only number one hit in the UK. 'Kiss' was also in falsetto and was obviously a hit globally.

Yes, but in the end he maybe did too much of it. Cause in the end there was like 50.000 people in the world who bought his albums. When Bowie always sold one or two millions of his albums.

I think his most sober album ever was Rainbow Children, and when you think about it, it wasn't so sober than that!

I have many friends who disliked Prince who really loves News. Because you don't hear Prince'voice.
A friend-fan told me his wife thought the same thing about News.

Some songs (imo) didn't lend itself to falsetto. His cover of Led Zeppelin "While Lotta Love" comes to mind. I know it was a live performance, but I would have loved to hear him sing it in the same vocal manner as "The Ride". Overall, his falsetto was, according to one publication when he first came out as the best in "RB since Smokey Robinson. I liked it for what he did with it most times.

As it relates to Bowie, his vocal register was different after the Ziggy Era as he transitioned to Plastic Soul for the the albums prior to the Berlin Trilogy. His Ziggy Era albums had a snarly, whine vs the lower sound of his later albums. Just my opinion of course, but huge fan of both.

But... If they truly disliked Prince, why on earth would your "many friends" even bother listening to an hour long instrumental album, consisting of four 14 minute tracks? It just doesn't sound very plausible to me.

It's a great question and whilst I love many of his falsetto tracks such as Scandalous and Adore, my favourites are the ones he delivers in his lower register.

I never really cared for International Lover until the live version on 1999 SDE which is far superior in my opinion.

Exactly. His Falsetto is part of his complex musical toolbox. It is thrilling when he uses it for dramatic creative effect...check out "U Know" and "Give em What U Want"...brilliant vocals.

Prince had the third best falsetto known to man (just behind Al Green and Marvin Gaye). It's my favorite Prince "voice".

Other honorable mentions:

Snokey Robinson

Curtis Mayfield

D'Angelo

Eddie Kendricks

Thom Yorke

Michael Jackson

Jeff Buckley

Freddie Mercury

Phillip Bailey

Andy Gibb

Little Richard

Roy Orbison

Del Shannon
