one day i hope the estate release a singles compilation

most notable artists have a singles compilation.

prince just has a handful of pointless best ofs

i mean, i like the hits the b sides but its just too much for a casual fan, and the ultimate prince and the other one are fine for casual fans who just want the big hits but a singles compilation, in chronological order, would be great, just to follow his career

i dont think it would be worthwhile doing it after 1995/96, once he left warners, but a comp from 78 to 95 would be so good.

could also be a way for the estate to milk the fans too by releasing a big 7" box set so hey, its a win win for everyone! lol

There really is a place for this. With the plethora of extended versions and b-sides (which had a 7" and 12" version), there's a great place for this. BUT, it could be too extensive. I think sticking with just the 12" versions of the A or B side for the set would be best. I don't need a 7" version of "When Doves Cry" or "Let's Go Crazy." Do I need the 12"? Fuck yeah, I do.

It gets weird when you get into the EP stuff ("Gett Off," "New Power Generation," "Cream" etc). But yeah, just like 1978-1988 would be a starter.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

No no, singles comp has to just be the single edits or album versions, not 12" versions! Not least cos several of those long or alt or bonus mixes are cool but many are also just not that necessary.

A 12" set would be a diff release (plus they kind of did it on the ultimate prince bonus disc already)

Something like this -

I would love to see an anthology of all the related artist material like The Time, Sheila E and others. And the songs he wrote for others like Chaka and Shenna Easton. Tracks from all the Prince proteges. Kind of like "R-Kive" from members of Genesis a few years back. Most were on Warners anyway.

I'm still waiting for the cd release of Anthology 1995 - 2010 though.

.

Nobody gives a shit about that. Want that? Make a Spotify playlist or whatever. But if TH/TBS is "too much", such a singles collection would be as well. And outside of some hardcore collectors, it would feel as a rip-off to fans who already have all that. It's wasting time and energy on something of little importance. Hell, 4Ever already basically is what you want.

.

The Estate should focus on the contents of the vault, as well as getting things back in print that have been OOP for decades (= the non-Prince releases in the Paisley Park Records catalog), but enhanced with bonus tracks (remixes etc. released on non-album releases) and outtakes. Instead we're now getting close to SIX MONTHS of zero output post-SOTT SDE.

Lol. Six whole months? How will we cope? You know these days releases arent always announced months in advance. I'm pretty sure something will be coming soon. Also pretty sure that it will be something dull like crystal ball, an album we all have.

Waste of time. Useful for lower grade musicians without the pedigree

The legacy needs to be based on the breadth of accomplishment and musicianship. Not on outdated 1980s metrics such as hits

Feels like another troll post

RODSERLING

There is already 5 singles compliations from the 1978-1993 era!
What would be the point?
What was needed, instead of 4 EVER, was The Hits 3 that run from 1994 to 2016.

Or a huge compilation from 1978 to 2016.
Else, it would be pointless.

Nice job! Now this I would purchase if there was a physical release. I hope the Estate is reading this.

Everyone else may disagree, but I would love a compilation of 7" edits. I enjoy listening to them and they make me appreciate and value more the slightly longer or differently mixed album versions which I've heard more often. Some edits have never been officially released on CD or digitally so it isn't possible to make a playlist of them all on streaming platforms. I do have this fan-made collection https://prince.org/msg/7/342405, but they are all vinyl rips and the volume levels are a little uneven. So while I have all the edits somewhere on my hard drive, I'd buy a complete and properly remastered compilation of 7" versions as soon as it was offered for sale.

There's something to be said for comprehensiveness, but I don't think 1-800-New-Funk and NPGMC exclusive releases really fit the bill as singles.

Now that's comprehensive!

But this is the prob when you start bringing in alternative and extended versions. It just gets too massive and sprawling. Also a lot of the later singles, they just dont tell a story of a career in the way the earlier ones did. After 95, his singles also got dull. Less risk taking. A set like this would have to have a fixed end point, maybe 95. It maybe even just the first decade, so 78 to 88. Thats when he was a great singles artist as well as an album one.

There should have been a Hits 3, with all the forgotten hits from WB era that weren't in the Hits 1 and 2

The Hits 3 :

4. Love Thy Will B Done ( prince version)
5. My Name is Prince

12. Holy River

Only 1 song from "1-800-NEW-FUNK" is on this set and that is because it featured Prince. The rest of the singles, MPLS, Margie Cox and Mayte are on the associated artists set. Plus the NPGMC singles were, in fact, singles so they are on here. He didn't stop releasing singles in 1995 so I just kept going with every single released. I totally get the earlier stuff was MUCH better but a single is a single whether I like it or not. Whether it was a physical copy, a promo copy or a digital download single I added it. It's funny how comprehensive I made my sets and people are still finding things wrong with it lol That's ok. Take what I made and edit it down to your tastes. That is what makes Prince so great!!

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

yeah no disrespect meant to you - its great you put in that effort.

im just saying, thats LONG! lol.

a definitive 12" versions comp would be cool too.

i just think its a separate thing to a singles comp.

i mean, i like the hits the b sides but its just too much for a casual fan, and the ultimate prince and the other one are fine for casual fans who just want the big hits but a singles compilation, in chronological order, would be great, just to follow his career

i dont think it would be worthwhile doing it after 1995/96, once he left warners, but a comp from 78 to 95 would be so good.

-

I do give a shit!

But only if it can be delivered in a new contemporary excellent execution, with new interesting extras,

and that doesn't necessarily have to be extra unpublished songs... (although I would looooooove some contemporary remixes done by those who rule the charts now)... or it also can be never seen photos, interactive info, more deep and detailed information, or whatever us long tiem fans can please ...

WHy ? This probably never will be the case with those hypersensitive, extremely cautious, banal commanding 'The Estate', as if it would be the most secretive decision in the universe to take...

I personally find The Estate's behaviour worse than the info about Michael Jackson in his heyday.

-

Like you say bart. Six months and nothing.
Actually, how dare they ?
Again, why couldn't they released at least a one off unreleased track or demo like they once did.
I mean, SOMETHING!
-
And I don't understand the bootleggers either.
Why can't they give us some of the so-called "elite" shit that everyone here wants so badly?

Especially as a counter (move) to the lazy uninformative Estate?

-

Why didn't The Estate communicate with us during these lost six months?

Just a lousy French interview that made no sense, and didn't tell us anything new?!

James Brown had 11 volumes of singles collections released, I think they can do a few volumes of Prince. It's a specialist market but nothing wrong with that. It's about time they copped that Prince isn't going to be having anymore big hits and they should cater to those who are interested.

And a lot of that stuff was OOP etc. With Prince most/all of the important/relevant things are easily available. The Estate should focus on the stuff that is OOP or rare or in need of a remaster (when it comes to previously released items), and that is mostly the 12"s, and it is clear by now that we'll likely only gonna get those as part of SDEs.

.

If they want to do a box set collection like the Depeche Mode one -- https://www.discogs.com/D...ase/243800 -- there would be some value, but it would still be only a relevant release if the price is kept low, since most of its contents will already be part of existing SDEs or of future ones. I don't see such a release becoming a major seller, and thus it's likely not a priority for the Estate.

.

Of course the real problem is Prince failing to curate his back catalog which caused fan releases of vinyl rips because that was the only way to obtain those tracks. Such collections should have been released decades ago; I can only be happy that in the early 1990s Warners Europe released a bunch of CD singles with several 1980s extended versions, but unfortunately those were a scattershot and vastly incomplete effort until the likes of T's "12inch Archive". Now it's 2021 and still many of those tracks are not available on CD, in part because the Estate is failing to come up with imaginative releases.

Whenever anyone suggests a singles collection, the compilations look great until the mid-90s when it all goes a bit south. They throw in everything.

The cost of a physical release of these would be astronomical.

Ah to have them all in the one place present and correct in the right edit would still be worth having and worth doing. Of course doing it without errors would be quite the task, you'd want experts like Ace records or similar to be involved and there's no way the Estate will be doing that. The James Brown ones were limited edition and sell for a premium these days, lets be honest, they could gouge us fans and get away with it if they are willing to do the task well. I don't have major faith in them actually managing that though.

Maybe they can do it in stages like Vol 1 (80s), 2 (90s) and 3 (00s). In chronological order too. I wouldn't prefer to have a song like Eye Wish U Heaven followed by Black Sweat.

There is a market for it and it's an established genre of release. Such releases are also good documentary uses of the CD format for those looking for a more academic view of a career. I see it as a limited edition thing rather than the next major estate release. Well actually I see it as never happening but if it was to happen that's how I'd see it.

No idea what OOP means...

but I agree on what you say.

-

I've been saying this for a long time in several treads here.

The gigantic lack of imaginative one off's or inbetweenies by the Estate, just to keep the $ rolling towards them from us older and hardcore fans whom are getting thinner and thinner, must be something they're aware of too.

What seems to be their real problem?

We still get no proper comprehensable answer from anyone involved.

Of course it's always about money, but...

Call me naive, I'm certainly no expert, but am I wrong thinking that The Estate & Paisley Park Enterprises (or how it's called) are seperate money sucking companies...

Do they actually get along ?

the hits comps were nice, but they werent in any real order, and they also had some album tracks, and some new tracks, which made it all a bit all over the place. maybe it played better, idk, but a chronological singles comp would prob still play well, and tell a cool narrative too. its 38 songs from 78 to 99, which is quite a bit.
