"When You Were Mine"......From Another POV

Haven't been on here in a while, so I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed:

Has anybody ever thought about this song from the perspective of a lesbian couple? I sometimes think about these lyrics from the perspective of 2 females in a relationship, & one of them is bi-sexual. Has anyone ever thought about it from this POV?

If so, what are your thoughts? Am I reaching with this topic?

I am a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, btw. So, I hope that I am not offending anyone with this topic.

Peace & Love.

"Goin with another guy" when sung by a man doesn't really lend itself to a song about Lesbians.... but the Cyndi Lauper version could. She purposely didn't change the gender of the lyrics. Not sure if he approved her version.

But it can, if the previous relationship of one of the women, was with a man prior. Hence, the "bi-sexual" reason I brought up, previously. shrug

I think it could easily be sung by someone who is lesbian or bisexual, and really shake up the lyrics. I don't think it was written that way. Prince teased sexuality a lot, but if that scene, Prince was huffin' and puffin' by himself on the side of the bed while his gal pal and her other man were doin' thangs under the covers that were unseemly. haha

I'm kinda surprised any lesbian or bisexual singer hasn't played with this song.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I am tired now but the OP is brave for bringing it up but it could provoke some orgers and I'm not up for a fight right now, so I'll see how I feel tomorrow. (The Org is more conservative now)

Maybe I'll orgnote.

for 1, i still dont believe John Nelson threw his teenage son out because he caught him with a girl (what black father does that??)... i beleve he caught him with a male (Andre?)..and i think Prince hints/reveals his bisexuality on multiple songs

Sexuality
Jack U Off
Sister
Anna Stesia
When U Were Mine
If I Was Your Girlfriend
Vagina
I Would Die 4 U
Uptown

etc.

Prince was either gay or bisexual (or gay for pay) at certain points in his career.

"you wanna know WHY you wouldnt make it?...because you wouldnt pass the INITIATION.."

what initiation, P?

this recording industry is a very dark place...especially near, or at the top

I don't hear it. "Another guy" implies there's a first guy and it's quite the stretch to say that this first guy is not the singer in the song.

Having said that, these songs aren't academic essays so if you want them to be about what you want them to be about who is going to stop you? When I was 15 I found a way of making every song about my life, specifically lol

Many artist have played with the gender dynamics of this brilliant song...including LGBTQ artists Ani Difranco + Tegan and Sara.

I thought the lyric was,

"I never was the kind to make a fuss

when he was there (he harmonizes with himself as if to say two males present)

sleepin' inbetween the two of us"

"Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends"

"religious" or not...black men (shit, other races either) dont throw their teenage sons away for experimenting with sex with young ladies...if anything (right or wrong), its celebrated...especially if your son is as pretty and effeminate as Prince was...no way John Nelson threw him out for having sex with a girl...nah

I also don't think Prince had girls swirling around him then. This is Prince 'lore'. He was shy, small,

and said himself that many of his early lyrics were about what he wanted to happen, not what was happening. He was eternally grateful for that one kiss in high school. He was not a player as a young dude.

As of this time on the Org., most will only allow these two narratives:

-Prince was 100% heterosexual

-Prince took opiates for 'hip pain' only

If one questions the above, be prepared for attacks.

This is what I mean by 'conservative'.

Re:' When U Were Mine', I thought it had more to do w/Prince accepting 'crumbs' from the woman just to be close to her. A bit of a self-esteem issue.

I always thought P meant the emotional baggage of the other guy was always hanging around them. Especially in the bedroom. You could assign any meaning you want really. That's the beauty of his lyrics

This is 1980 though, the Prince mystique is in full effect. He meets Vanity around this time, he's met Sheila already, and we've heard Lisa's account of first meeting him. I don't think we've heard any of the old bandmates talk about him struggling with girls.

As for the lyrics, wouldn't you have to think Prince was writing sincere confessionary literal songs about his sexuality and that he wasn't writing wry word play to be provocative, tongue in cheek with word play?

You gotta go upthread to read my statement in the context that I meant.

  • My above statement was in reference to 12 y/o Prince being thrown out of the house for messin w/girls. I doubt that happened. He was way too grateful to get one kiss in high school (his biography) to be a player @ that time.
  • I also stand by my analysis of a guy (in that song) who was essentially hurt by his GF's actions
  • He talks about giving her all his money, her not having the decency to change the sheets, implying she was sleeping w/a bunch of guys and it 'hurting him so'...sounds to me he was willing to take whatever she offered just to be close to her.
  • It was only a few years prior that Prince was being over-looked by girls in high school.
