Was Prince working on a specific new album when he passed? Sorry if this is already common knowledge, but I was wondering if in any interviews or posts before his death he mentioned a new project planned. I do know he would be recording all the time, but I’m curious if something specific was in the works. I don’t know, a HITNRUN phase 3 or something.

To my awareness it was Black is the New Black and a new MPLS sound album featuring a full orchestra. Also a live album of one or both of his final Piano & Microphone shows in Atlanta.

LMAO...WTF? No joke. Prince said that he and Michael B. Nelson were working on arrangements with horns and orchestra and that would be the new Minneapolis sound. Baltimore gives us an idea of that sound. Unfortunately, he didn't live long enough to develop it. [Edited 2/17/21 12:00pm] If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

I believe this 'new sound' he found was recording, say, a guitar solo for a song, and then removing the guitar from the track, and orchestrating what the guitar played, and using that in the track, such as is evidenced in Balitmore.
Man I love that song. It gets a rough time round here, but I think it's fantastic.
And so yes, this was mentioned as something Prince was working on near the end, as well as an instrumental album, by what were they called? NPGQ? The jazzy quartet/orchestra thing, I forget their name !

I remember a video leaked from Paisley Park in March 2016 and you could see Studio A and some funky music playing. I suspected it was Hit n Run Phase 3. . My understanding was any or all of these were coming out or in the works . 1. Hit n Run Phase 3 and possibly up to Phase 5 (Mainly new recordings and workings of old vault tracks). 2. The Michael B Nelson Horns/Orchestra album 3. Another 3EG album 4. Live set of the Piano and Microphone tour 5. Black is the New Black - New Prince solo set of funk styled music 6. New Protege albums? - Judith Hill, Ida, Joshua Welton, Liane Lahavas and Paloma Ayana. I got plenty good loving for ya baby

. Lianne La Havas? LOL. She sent him some songs to get his reaction, but she said in an interview that she didn't even sent all of her music because Prince could be a very judgemental asshole. © Bart Van Hemelen

“That time in my life, knowing him, was so surreal and special. It didn’t hit me for a long time, the reality of his passing. He’s very missed. I also wish that I could have sent him this new album, because I feel like that’s what he was always wanting me to do: make something that I was really proud of.”

Jeez people are uptight in this place. Christ.
Back to the question of the thread....yes I've always wondered that too. Personally, I had the thought that Prince was looking for a sound the last few years of his life. He may have just been doing what was interesting him at the moment but there were wild swings in styles: 3rdEyeGirl, Hit and Run I (electronic and then more organic Hit and Run II), the NPG big band format and Piano and A Microphone. Then we was messing with Mono Neon and co. towards the end.
If there is anything that is complete however, I hope the Estate does release it. Sometimes I feel like the Vault material is kind of moot since so much has been bootlegged for so many years.

I bet Prince was that prolific there'll be a "Black is the New Orange" album in there and also "Black is the New Wack" The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

LOL Even from the grave he triggers you and you still hate him with a passion. Yet you trawl the internet every waking hour seeking news you can re-post all over. Quite strange and sad . You hate him because you love him, but you can’t love him because you hate him.. LOL

He was working on a jazz project with MonoNeon. I heard some of it at Paisley during a tour last year.
