And so yes, this was mentioned as something Prince was working on near the end, as well as an instrumental album, by what were they called? NPGQ? The jazzy quartet/orchestra thing, I forget their name !

im sure there will be a few gems in these albums but im not expecting any full length album masterpieces.

That's a strange comment. What pointers could a near 40 year veteran in the music industry, an undisputed icon, take from someone in their mid-20's who, at the time, had only been in the biz for a couple of minutes?

Back to the question of the thread....yes I've always wondered that too. Personally, I had the thought that Prince was looking for a sound the last few years of his life. He may have just been doing what was interesting him at the moment but there were wild swings in styles: 3rdEyeGirl, Hit and Run I (electronic and then more organic Hit and Run II), the NPG big band format and Piano and A Microphone. Then we was messing with Mono Neon and co. towards the end.

If there is anything that is complete however, I hope the Estate does release it. Sometimes I feel like the Vault material is kind of moot since so much has been bootlegged for so many years.

This sums it up, and he said it would change how he made music from then on, and he planned to release a lot of material that way. What he meant by it, beyond Baltimore, we don't really know though. He could have always made a guide track for the orchestration, so there had to have been something deeper going on. He had to know he could have any instrument transcribed into orchestrated notation, and he had to have done it in the past (maybe with Parade?) but I guess something about finding a partner that unlocked something creatively for him helped.
