New Power music of 1989ish period
Prince had a lot of music coming out of Paisley Park in this period. In so many directions. Margie Cox Anna Fantastic Robin Power and the Uptown Dames Kahoru Kohiruimaki . I've put together a playist of songs from the list above, including a few the Time piece, Brown Mark, Jill Jones, Are You My Baby(W&L)-just because and Madonna It paints an interesting background/behind the scenes picture
Prince’s new, powerful, minimalist approach reduces his past innovations to passing (but often pivotal) references, trashes the notion that a song must address only one subject and obliterates barriers between musical styles.

Can you describe more of what you mean by "less melodic"? I've seen the quote before but I don't really understand it in relation to his previous music. Always just felt like sour grapes from Sheila.

an arrangement of different notes in structured patterns on lead instruments, bassline, and lead vocal.
As opposed to repreating the same single note, or repetitious short note phrases like a mantra (very popular today) and emphasizing the beat. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Perfect answer. . 88 89 era have strong melodic hooks on instruments but there is no melody in the vocals .i think Prince was chasing a new ground .a new experimental phase of his career where the melodic content is carried within song arrangement and not the voice like it usualy is

Always just felt like sour grapes from Sheila. Love 89 for example. Theres things happening but not a melody and chorus to ride on...Love 89 which is built off of The Line is an odd one as well because The Line itself is a much more melodic and interesting track. Lemon Crush, Batdance, The Future are more musical experiences than melodic tracks and funk workouts. He was more so having fun in the studio with new equipment in my opinion rather than pleasing the crowd. However, he will have a brief period of righteousness with "Get Blue" for example. A sexy and seductive slow jam he eventually gave to Louie...and "Allegiance" given to Howard Hewitt, and "If Eye Love U 2Nite" to Mica. Not sure why he chose to give those away when they are clearly gems and would have worked on any album. This issue is probably why he chose to put out unreleased songs on Grafitti Bridge. I think he was overworked and needed a break. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I think maybe he had his eye (and ear) on New Jack Swing which was blowing up at the time and trying to develop his own verson of that. New Jack Swing isn't super melodic and puts the focus squarely on rhythm.

The sessions with Margie Cox I think had a good chance of making some headway in 1989-90. He should have put the effort he put on Carmen Electra into Margie. According to PrinceVault they did open for Prince a few times
1. R U There? 2. Brand New Boy 3. Warden in the Prison of Love 4. Bed of Roses 5. Good Man 6. Whistlin Kenny 7. We Can Hang 8. Curious Blue 9. Girls Will Be Girls 10 Good Body Every Evening

He ran out of Vitamin D and when you run out of Vitamin D you run out of melodies- what happens when you lock yourself in a studio and avoid the sun. YO MISTER
Oh, mister how's your daughter?
You really ought to know For every thing you taught her Don't matter when she's all alone My crazy friend named Cara
After all of us told her, ?No? S-s-she'd get another spoon ball Now, she's going no where slow Her papa caught her for the first time
And put her out on the street Cara told me to remind him That she was only seventeen Yo, mister how's your daughter? how's your girl?
You really ought to know Every thing you taught her It don't matter when she's all alone Cara got hooked up with the wrong kids
Then s-s-she started skipping school Then Cara got high to make disappear A world full of fools In her eyes her father was the biggest fool of them all
And she was speeding, that's what she?d say Maybe, maybe, maybe she wouldn't talk so stupid If she knew how much she needed this fool today Yo, mister how's your daughter?
You really ought to know For every thing you taught her Don't matter when she's all alone She needs you right now mister
?Cause she ain't got long to live It?s so easy to say, ?I love you? But it?s harder to forgive Her father cried when I told him that Cara twice got knocked up
He said, ?Just like her mama, aha, she shows her body When she wants to show love, she tried that stuff with me And I beat her down, there's no way I could let her stay Couldn't let her stick around ? ?Cause I tried so hard to raise her right
He said, ?What made her turn out this way?, I don't know What made her turn out this way, I don't know, I don't know And I said and I said and I said Yo, mister how's your daughter?
You really ought to know, every thing Every thing you taught her Don't matter when she's all alone But she needs you right now mister
She ain't got long to live It?s easy to say, ?I love you? But it?s harder to forgive (How?s your daughter tonight?) Yo, mister how's your daughter?
(How?s your daughter tonight?) Yo, mister how's your daughter? (How?s your daughter tonight?) Yo, mister how's your daughter?
(How?s your daughter tonight?) Yo, mister how's your daughter? (How?s your daughter tonight?)

Love '89, Flesh and Blood are a bit rubbish by P standards. There's better music recorded in the vault around this time. The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

I actually love listening to Love 89. Very high energy. If feels like it could have been a B side to Dance With the Devil (if that was released)

I love this era quite a bit for some reason. I dug the new sounds he was using; while they aren't perfect, they all try something new....you can hear him searching or maybe just getting the last bit of drum machine addiction out of his system before fully immersing into the NPG. - There's something about the Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic '89 project that entices me. I imagine this period replacing Grafitti Bridge and entering him into the 90's a lil mo' betta. - I feel like if that album had been carefully and artistically compiled he could've build off the commercial appeal from the Batman album. Combining the best of the updated vault tracks from GB and adding some highlights from this era would've been fantastic. - & the '89 SNL Band was a fucking treasure and a worthy successor to the Lovesexy Band. Margie Cox, Patrice Rushen & Candy Dulfer is just *chef's kiss

I feel like everyone is dancing around the issue with this era though... "less melodic" = the absence of Wendy & Lisa. Yeah, I said it.

well i don't connect W and L as the melody providers. but the melodic contect got weak 1988-1990

Yeah, love W&L and the music they created with Prince, but there are tons of great melodies which predate them
