I think you may be in the minority with this.

To capture the energy of the live sound for the film performances in the same way he did with the back end of Purple Rain.

Live version is still better, thumping groove in the studio or not.

It is worth releasing but so was Possessed and Moonbeam Levels and Dance with the Devil and so on and so on.

The studio version is a well produced demo, at most. Jesse's guitar, Jellybean's energy on drums, etc etc all make the live version highly superior.

Probably because it was presented as live in the movie. The reason he didn't include anyone else on the Purple Rain "soundtrack" is he didn't want the attention diverted from him. Not dissing, but that's just a fact. He had something to prove and it was his project, so he called the shots.

The live version is better in every measurable way, I think. I do like the studio version though.

Studio version should've been the b-side to the Bird single. or a version on the 12".

Why didn't Prince release (insert 500 different songs here) instead of (insert entire albums here)? *shrug* An abundance of wealth in that department, more or less. Too much to choose from and too much freedom in choosing led to some questionable decisions. I never wanted Prince's artistic vision to be controlled or censored, but in hindsight I think most of us agree that he could have used a trusted voice (or ten) in helping him decide which songs should have ended up on albums or been released.
