Informative interview with Peggy McCreary about Prince...

This is a great and infromative interview, done in February by the Sunset Sound folks, with Peggy McCreary, who was a main sound engineer for Prince during from Controversy through the Revolution era. Fair Warning: one of the interviewers really wants to steer the conversation to Van Halen, and says frustrating things like "The beginning of When Doves Cry sounds like Van Halen. Did Prince and Eddie ever meet in the halls?". Regardless, I assure you all that there is a big chunk in the middle where Peggy tlks about Prince at length. It's very good, and has new info.

Awesome video - thank you. That interviewer is Dweezil Zappa - Frank's son.

It absolutely is a great interview... The Sunset Sound folks said that part 2 is coming tonight and it's ALL about Prince.

  • I like her, she's so down-to-earth, not self-important.
  • Ole Dweezil has the 'hots' for Edward.

it was interesting that Dweezil asked about Prince's guitar playing on When Doves Cry. I have long loved that and have always felt it was not celebrated enough. Although Dweezil seemed to call out how great the playing was, he seemed to call Prince just a 'great player'...like he wasn't one of the best.

I'm probably being an over-sensitive fan.

It seemed to me that when Peggy would mention Prince, Dweezil wanted to return to talking about Eddie.

Did he imply that Prince may have 'borrowed' from Eddie re:WDC?

There's a part two, on the channel, too! I haven't watched it yet, though...so I have no idea how much of the chat is about Prince. Nevertheless, given the quality of the first chunk of the chat, I'm sure it will be as informative and interesting.

And, yes, Peggy McCreary is so wonderful.

You are. Prince wasn't one of the best by a mile. There are guys in every town I've lived in that could smoke Prince strictly as physically handling the instrument goes. His ideas and songs set him apart, not his physical skill in manipulating the instrument. I love Prince as a guitarist. Don't get me wrong. He didn't change the instrument or introduce anything new, though. He didn't even take what someone else has done and do it better than them. He's a legend because of the entire package, not because of skills on any one instrument.

This is a good listen. I'm not an audiophile and don't always understand a lot of the process so quite insightful. Especially fun as always hearing what a pain in the ass Prince could be.

I agree that Dweezil always seems to want to steer the convo back to Eddie Van Halen and why it bothers a few people here. But it makes me wonder how many of the Van Halen fans are listening to it wishing they'd shut the fuck about Prince.

Prince..."White people don't have any rhythm" when Peggy would inadvertently bop her head to his music.

His father was also a "Great Player"...wudve been interesting if Dweezil had any Prince/Zappa anecdotes.
