Is it safe to say the Diamonds & Pearls album sounds like Michael Jackson?

After repeated listenings of the album, to me, it makes sense. I believe Frank Dileo managed Prince to promote the album (while Michael's Dangerous was also on the charts).

People say that Michael Jackson's Blood On The Dancefloor is inspired by Prince but maybe they were just thinking of Prince's late 80s/ early 90s work which involved Michael's staff.

You need to listen to music outside of the top 10.

Yes!
I always thought that.
I m an MJ fan, and my first albums were Emancipation and D&P, and I loved it because it sounded like MJ.
.
Lovesymbol sounds a lot like MJ too.

The lame ass "people say..." argument is bullshit. Site a source! Dileo consulting on the D&P promotion is not managing Prince, nor does it lend to the sound of an album. The last place Dileo is going to get his fingers is on Prince's soundboard. D&P came out in 1991. MJ's most recent album at that point was 1987's BAD. And technically, D&P was out almost 2 months before Dangerous. Dileo also wasn't working for MJ by the time Dangerous was out. They ended their working relationship two years before. Again, site a source for Blood on the Dance Floor, a largely remix album, was in any way inspired by or perceived as a threat of Prince's music taking over. You start talking about "staff" people influencing a record by an A-list artist is just obtuse and ridiculous. The "staff" isn't around when MJ or Prince is hearing a song in their head, and putting it to DAT. Stop these nonsense posts.

But to answer the question of D&P sounding like MJ: Not at all. At the same time, MJ had Dangerous out, an album filled with New Jack Swing and Teddy Riley production efforts. D&P wasn't that sound at all. Not that one of them was trying to bounce off another in sound. D&P was a beginning point of Prince doing a lot of heavy production, too many fucking tracks. Things like "Daddy Pop," "Jughead," "Live 4 Love," and "Push" weren't typical production from Prince. It was a new direction. Also, the lighter fair like "Strollin," "Willing and Able," "Walk Don't Walk," and "Money Don't Matte 2 Nite" doesn't sound like anything Prince ever did.

The closest thing I can hear MJ maybe trying to record is "Cream," only because it's such a straight forward pop song. It compares slightly to something like "Remember The Time."

If you go to MJ's previous album, BAD, 1987 had an entirely different sound than the early 90s (read: new jack swing, rappers on pop songs). You certainly couldn't put something like Parade or SOTT against BAD (fite me) and say "this sounds like MJ" or "that sounds like Prince."

And while I'm comparing these two albums, I believe it's a safe bet to say these two mega stars purposely stayed out of each other's lanes with music ideas and production sounds. Sure there are similarities like a record scratch, or maybe the sound of glass breaking or whatever, but when you get to the nitty gritty essence of a song, there are few similiarities between them. I think that's good. They were good for each other as far as staying away from each other musically.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

No.

Just one reason is the feel that Prince's vocal range gives to D&P.

Not saying MJ didn't use his range, but it gives a very different flavor, IMO.

Not in this or any other universe.

Also, your post directly contradicts your thread title. If "people say" (what people?) Blood on the Dancefloor was inspired by Prince (as you assert), then the correct thread title would be "Is is safe to say that Michael Jackson's Blood on the Dancefloor sounds like Prince?"

But I suspect you phrased it as you did because you knew a thread with that title would have been moved to Music: Non Prince.

D&P and Dangerous were both albums that were pop mainstream oriented with a touch of funk and rap. These two albums were also very eclectic, when what was working at the time was album that were one-genre-oriented ( Nevermind from Nirvana for instance, also released around the same time).

They were released almost at the same time, so the comparison is subconscious.
.
Never heard about BOTDF, but it s true that Superfly Sister always made me thought of Prince.
But IIRC, the CD of BOTDF shows the kind of pearls that were part of the visual art of D&P. It always struck me too.
.
I said it before, but I m not sure if Dileo had real output in D&P, like he was on Bad.
.
First, Dileo only had power in the USA.
He was fired by MJ because he wasn't able to make a deal to release Moonwalker in theaters in the US. Consequently, the eight and ninth single from BAD weren't released in the USA, but were nonetheless hits in Europe.
.
Dileo "released" 7 singles from BAD in 16 months. But he "released" 5 US singles
In only 9 monthsmonths for D&P.
So the pacing and strategy wasn't the same.
.
In fact, Gett Off was released 4 months before the album, which killed like 3 months of potential sales for the upcoming album.
.
Considering that, there were in fact 4 singles released in 6 months for D&P, which was way too much and a commercial mistake.
.
Also considering the fact they hesitated with releasing Willing and able ( I think there were even advertising for this upcoming single around the Superbowl), it was way too much for people to follow.
.
So, outside the fact that Dileo knew the tricks of payola and all, it s hard to say if he really had a choice chosing the singles, with Aboth MJ and Prince.

LOL. I've never heard anyone say this. D&P while having some roots in 70s/80s radio R&B doesnt sound ANYTHING like MJ whether Off the Wall/Thriller/Bad or Dangerous era. Where did this idea come from?

And Cream was a straight fucking rip off of Get It On (Bang A Gong) by T Rex from 1971, though Prince might have been inspired by the 1980s hit cover of it by Power Station. D & P sounds like nothing MJ ever did. Who cares? Apples and Oranges.

I think I know what you mean: the lush, conventional, full band feeling of the mix of much of the album, and the very normal, mainstream friendly tone and reverb of the majority. It's as if Quincy Jones produced a Prince album. But the following album also had much of that sound to it.

You mean Thriller or Bad era stuff.

Anytime an MJ fan wants to discover Prince, I advise him D&P. And it works. It s a very accessible album, in the same vein of what MJ did throughout his whole carreer.

If it makes OP feel any better, I think the cover art to Prince's '92 album was influenced by Michael Jackson's '91 album.

But no, even though D&P is one of the most commercial sounding albums P did, it still doesn't sound like Michael Jackson.

However, I would say 'Dangerous' is the closest MJ came to making a Prince record (if P had done it I wouldn't have questioned it). It's a brilliant album regardless.

No! Because Prince's(r.i.p.) "Diamonds & Pearls" album NEVER gets the respect it deserves. Even though it was one of his highly successful albums.

Taking this with some humor. Assume you meant it that way. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

Help me out identifying people here. 1) Do Caucasian people say yay or nay to D & P sounding like Michael Jackson?

2) Also, are you stating your preference for Caucsian people not giving any relply to threads about nonCaucasian artists? This question is sincere, just in case it sounds otherwise. We have despicable history here in the U.S., and we need to reckon with it.

This is a good point, Purple Rain might be a better album but for the biggest album of a pop star's career it's pretty ragged sounding.

"No.
