Why did Prince murder ‘Data Bank’? I get it was entering a new era of music, the sound on the radio was changing, but thats no excuse to disrespect this jam! The unreleased original is the shit!! Did Prince intentionally make it awful for The Time version in 1990? I don’t understand

Yeah, I don't get it either. The songs was basically ruined. The Time's version doesn't even sound like a Prince song, even though it's supposedly one that was only Prince and Morris involved. How can adding Morris Day take a funny song and make it serious and boring? Bizarre. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

He'd do that sometimes. Just keep working over a certain song for whatever reason. I read an interview of his where he said "I wish I could get it to sound like what I hear in my head" which, as an artist myself, hit home since my drawings and paintings never quite hit how I've visualized them.

By this point you'd think he was purposely sabotaging his mid-80s output (e.g the "jazz version" of Old Friends 4 Sale). Thankful that "Joy In Repetition" made it through relatively unscathed. [Edited 12/20/20 10:36am]

Why would it be unusable? IMO the 1986 version is far superior. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

The Time's 1990 version should have been given the original Wally treatment... "I like to watch."

lol it's true, same with We can Fu(c)(n)k. A bunch of great versions already in the can and he releases the worst one in an attempt to stay relevant.

Guys, you know you can't just take All My Dreams and throw it into Diamonds And Pearls as such. Corporate World was P's attempt at sounding new jack swing The 1986 arrangement was unusable on that album or any other early 90's Prince project, period. It's not about good or bad, it's about cohesiveness. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

And Prince's original versiom of 'Data Bank' is circulating in excellent quality anyway.

Well, Jerk Out and certainly Chocolote sound like straight up old school Minneapolis funk to me. Why not leave Databank untouched? RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I only started enjoying Tick, Tick, Bang after I heard the original version, it's like I needed to hear that version to make sense of the Graffiti Bridge version. I enjoy it now!

Glad to see that you are still here and that Prince didn't murder you! If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Guys... Really? Precisely because DB86 is NOT as mpls sound as the other two. And it's a live band recording with the Counter Revolution. How LESS new jack swing can you get? . Besides, Prince wasn't even gonna use Chocolate and Jerk Out on the album: the band picked them after P bailed out. . It's not about how old it is, it's about how it sounds. If you don't hear it, just take our word for it. It didn't work. Period. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
