the beauty of art is its subjectivity right. the songs u mentioned are more (seemingly) relational to me but your take could be enlightening. I think the titles i give the "spiritual" label to, even with varying degrees, are more readily identifiable as such

The Word and Let's Go Crazy
For years I didn't know Prince was referring to the elevator as the devil and going crazy is believing in God.I believe it was the Chris rock 1996 interview

We all know that Prince lyrics could be taken in many different ways. In that respect the song It from SOTT could be a spiritual song. He could be singing about praying.

The ‘titties swinging like a door’ line in Acknowledge Me is especially spiritual

lol

Great pull! To each his own, right? Prince has a LOT of "thank heaven above" for the Human Body lyrics. This sure isn't one of my favorite of P's praise-and-gratitude-for-the-sensual lyrics : ), but for what my opinion is worth, I do really like Acknowledge Me.

-----------------------------------

As far as P's thoughts on what may be filed under "spiritual," he did say sex is spiritual union.

From that view, a LOT of Prince songs could qualify as spiritual.

It's "de-elevator" not "the elevator".

I see this argument a lot. What is the confirmation that he sings 'De-elevator'? I always assumed it was 'elevator' because he suggest punching a higher floor.

"Beautiful, Loved & Blessed" has lyrics straight out of the Bible but it isn't an obvious one.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Just check the lyrics in the album.

"de-elevator"= not uplifting = devil/evil

Prince's explaination was that "devil" wasn't allowed on the radio, hence the lyric and the play on words.

Never really got what Prince meant by that. A bunch of songs frequently played on pop radio mentioned the devil. Coud P have meant that songs that referenced the devil somewhat seriously (vs. songs such as Devil with the Blue Dress On) were unlikely to get pop radio play?

Also wonder how many people realized Prince sang de-elevator (vs. the elevator) before reading the lyrics? I didn't realize until I read the lyrics, but maybe my ears aren't the best. : )

Whatever the case, I LOVE P's play on words. Wish I had known it was "de-elevator" from the first time I thought I heard it! And if any limitations of pop radio encouraged this play on words, then IMO limitations produced something great. For once! lol
