I mean, as many have pointed out, it was a single. It's corny as hell but I always felt it was quite ahead of the times, all the late 90s Backstreet's Back-style songs come from this don't they? Kinda post-New Jack Swing pop.

There were so many tracks on the album that could have been hits...
There were 7 singles + Daddy Pop had almost been a single ( music video + commercial s at the superbowl).
All in less than a year.

Because it makes my ears bleed.

I wish someone was around to say, "Prince, please slowly step away from the recording console....if you lay down one more vocal track, you will break the space-time continuum."

I like Thunder. It has a nice build and great vocal layering from Prince. I don’t think a song mentioning Jesus could’ve been a big pop hit though, realistically speaking.

With regards to it not fitting in with the NPG band sound on the rest of the album, there’s a few tracks don’t really fit in, minus the Tony and Rosie vocals.

Daddy Pop uses some similar percussion sounds to Thunder: electronic drum sounds with synthetic percussion lines. Thunder sounds like synth clave sticks, and Daddy Pop sounds like a synth triangle. There are definitely some similar things happening in those songs to tie them together.

Gett Off, Walk Don’t Walk, and Push also don’t really sound like band productions if you take away the guest vocals.

That’s nearly half the songs that could’ve been Prince solo tracks.

In terms of Thunder not being cohesive with the rest of the album thematically, what is really the theme of the album? It just sounds like a musical and thematic hodgepodge to me. Live 4 Love ties in with the message of Thunder, so the rest of the tracks are bookended by 2 spiritual songs, but that doesn’t really create a strong theme. To me it just sounds like Prince trying to be commercial, catchy, and maybe a little restrained or conventional.

I believe...it's kinda cold and not the Prince we like.....but..the Joffrey ballet version is very warm-hearted 2 c.

but imagine...Prince..or you ..dancing to this....so cool

It was the last D+P single released in the UK.

There are lots of naysayers when it come to Thunder. It's odd to me, as some of the criticisms people have for Thunder (simple/beneath him/juvenile/etc.) are frequently heard about other songs. But, for some reason, Thunder seems to bug people more than other songs similarly characterized. Maybe all that thunder gets people fired up, whatever their opinions. : )

I'm one of those who loves the song. All through the night, let's hear Thunder!

Have you seen this Joffrey Ballet Thunder performance?

Thunder starts at 16:10 and goes through to 27:00.

Now I get to be the naysayer, 'cause I'm not too crazy about the first part of the dance. But I do like it much better as it gets further

along, and it's cool to hear what happens with the dance music that combines with the song themes to extend the Thunder dance to nearly 11 minutes.

a big portion of prince's fans, at least here, are God haters and struggle with his spiritual content mightily. some are able to name it and own it, others dismiss it and others still are in denial of where their animus about such songs comes from. but yeah, the Joffrey KILLED with Thunder as an opener! Gave me even greater appreciation for it. it's "theatrics" translated well with that medium!

God help them....

"Thunder" is okay, but probably not a good single choice,at least not here in the States.

I always felt that "Live 4 Love" should have been a single.

I agree, I always thought Live for Love would have been a great single choice, with a good music video.
Just after MDM2N.
