Per Nilsen, The Vault, etc

Hello, guys!

It's been a decade since the last time I tried to get The Vault book.

- Is Per Nilsen still doing Prince-related research and publications or articles online?

- Was The Vault ever published again? Or released as an ebook?

- Is there any website that offers the level of information that book did? Especially the information on sessions, unreleased tracks, etc etc

Thank you!

Thank you, Nouveau! I was actually checking out that page this morning, the Purple Rain section. I remember reading back in the early 90s in one of Nielsen's books regarding all the tracks recorded but not included in the album. I don't see any reference for that kind of info here. Is there a separate section for that kind of stuff, do you know?

Thanks!

Carlo

I have A Documentary from i think 1990. I loved so much that book. Then came MusicSexRomance. Can't recall if I bought it. Then The Vault. I remember fans would call The Vault the Prince bible. It was a fat book full of info.

Would love an expert on Nilsen here to tell me the difference among these books. Was it just updates of the same? Different focus or type of info? All i know Vault seems major compared to the other two.

I’m pretty sure Per Nilsen stepped away from Prince related research quite a few years ago. He is now a professor of implementation science at Linköping University in Sweden. A google search can find his contact details if you want to ask questions but he’s likely a busy man focussing on his research interests.

Th Prince Vault site has a wealth of detail, perhaps not what might be a modern day website but my gosh, any Prince fan can spend hours on there.

With regards to sessions, the Duane Tudahl Purple Rain era studio session book will help. A follow up Parade and Sign O’ The Times era one is due next year.
There may or may not be something coming!

Thank you so much, Frankie!

Funny you mention Tudahl. Just learned today about his two books. His first one revised soft cover is in my Amazon cart already. smile And saw the new one coming out next year. Something that cought my attention is that the second one title/description does not mention Around The World In A Day. Was that album included in the first book?? Or do you know if it will be fully skipped??

Per Nilsen has moved away from work on Prince and made the decision after The Vault to focus on other things. He does not work on PrinceVault and the book was never republished or issued as an eBook.

The various books that he authored / co-authored are listed here, together with many other books:

http://www.princevault.co...bliography

Prince: A Documentary (1990) - Per Nilsen
http://www.princevault.co...918163.jpg
This first work documented events in Prince's life in chronological order up to the end of November 1989, with sections at the end covering officially released albums, singles, compositions for other artists, recordings with guest appearances by Prince, some cover versions of released Prince songs, unreleased material etc., audio and video tapes and a bibliography. It also includes images of Prince, released recordings, posters, magazine covers etc..

Prince: A Documentary (1993) - Per Nilsen

http://www.princevault.co...931798.jpg
This was essentially an updated version of the 1990 edition with the main section now accounting for events in Prince's life up to October 1992

Dancemusicsexromance. Prince: The First Decade (1999) - Per Nilsen
http://www.princevault.co...719233.jpg
Rather than presenting events as a chronology, this book relates the story of the first 10 years of Prince's musical career based around many interviews with associates. There are sections at the end of the book that again document recording sessions, live performances, recordings etc..

The Vault: The Definitive Guide To The Musical World of Prince - Per Nilsen & jooZt Mattheij with the UPTOWN Staff

http://www.princevault.co...15482X.jpg
The Vault reverts back to the style of the earlier publications up until the end of 2003, and in considerable detail, but with no images included.

The title to the second book, Prince and the Parade and Sign "O" the Times Era Studio Session: 1985 and 1986, doesn't mention the album because, although the first book is titled: Prince and the Purple Rain Era Era Studio Session: 1983 and 1984, that Purple Rain Era also covers the recording of the 'Around The World In A Day' album - so you can read all about that in the book you've already ordered.

For example, the entry for December 24, 1984 refers to the recording and editing of final parts to three of the tracks and the compilation of the album.

BTW, Duane is a member here and sometimes posts, and you can join his Facebook group: "Prince: The Complete Studio Sessions book series".

Try reading Princevault, look at the titles of the books and use a calendar.

Yes he is, but he's keeping it super-duper secret.

No, it a Dutch guy (Joost?) who apparently also did a little bit of stuff with Per Nilssen and Uptown back then.

For some reason that rings in my head that maybe I've heard that before.

Sure, but the point of a discussion formum is to engage in a dialogue... ya know, exhanging information through converations. That's what I'm doing.

Depsite what Bart says, there is no shame or laziness or lack of merit in acquiring info through conversation/interactive text. The idea that reading information in pre-existing, static text is a superior forum of learing, compared to reading that same information in an interactive forum, is demonstrably ridiculous.

Asking a question where the answer might already exist in a static format on the internet certainly doesn't require anyone to "do my work for me". No one is obligated to answer a question I post here. However, many people come to a discussion forum because they, ya know, enjoy discussing Prince. These people might actually enjoy answering questions, rather than pointing people to pre-existing static responses, because they like talking about it too.

And yet going as far back as Usenet people invented the FAQ so people would stop asking the same questions over and over again. Betcha that upset you, right?

Then demonstrate it.

Oh please, in the past book threads were lucky to get a second page before auto-closing after three months. Meanwhile a thread of the same old pictures of Prince's peen would get to ten pages in an instant.

.

Well, we're six days later, and you've gotten no answer. So how's your "let someone else do my homework for me" strategy going?

I'm not active at all in the Prince world, aside from buying all the releases and checking into prince.org. I'm not doing any Prince research - that stopped in 2004 or so when I did The Vault book. I'm still in touch with some Prince followers, incl. Duane Tudahl. However, research has been my main focus since 2002 or so. I'm a professor of public health and social medicine, with particular focus on implementation science. That's it biggrin Saw the speculation and thought I'd clarify. Per

Many thanks to you Per for the clarification and for everything you've done for the community until 2004 biggrin .

Nowadays, Duane and others are doing the work you did back then and we're all benefitting from this corpus of research you guys unearthed.

Per, thank you. You wrote two amazing books and left us wanting more. That's success, by any measure.

Thanks so much for clarifying! It's cool to know that you're focused on other stuff and still checking out Prince stuff a bit.
