The core of that band would later do the Nude tour, except that the role that later Rosie would take was now filled in by Patrice Rushen and Margie Cox

Mustve been a dream for Prince to get Patrice Rushen in his band. I wonder if she was asked to make it permanent.

I believe it's Michael B. who told the Prince Podcast that his understanding was that she was, but that she chose to focus on her own career instead, which I guess made sense.

She actually met Prince very early on, during the recording of For You, on which she played some keyboards uncredited, but at that time she was a recognized star while Prince was still an unknown kid from Mpls. Given the nature of their relationship, I can only assume that she played on SNL as a favor but that becoming Prince's employee would have been somewhat awkward, despite her career not being what it had been anymore in 1989.

I'd love for her to tell her version of the story though, Michael didn't appear to be too sure and I believe Levi also said in his own Prince podcast that he didn't know either what went on exactly.

I would imagine everyone knows Prince's past with Patrice Rushen and their ensuing mutual friendship and admiration.

This SNL performance always felt like an in-between band. The Lovesexy band had long since been broken up, and the only real remnants were Fink, Miko and Levi. It was Michael B. and Candy Dulfer's debut with the band. You couldn't even really see Patrice in the performance, which is unfortunate. But it does seem she sat in as a favor for this performance, since she was nowhere before or after (that I know of) playing live with him. Of course, they could've toyed with the idea of her joining for a while.

Same with Margie Cox (unless I'm just forgetting something). It's odd that Margie Cox sorta hung on for so long. This was 1989, yet she was still recording songs w/ Prince, and had a release years later on 1800NewFunk. They were still far and few between, so one wonders what she was doing in between those times.

Patrice would've been an interesting addition but probably wouldn't have lasted thru the D&P and prince era.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I would have loved a few more shows with this band doing Batman era/connected songs.

She discusses it on Questlove's podcast.

Agree with the bolded part especially.

As for Margie Cox, she'd already been around for years by that point as well. Similarly to Jill Jones, it seems he'd express interest and get someone hyped only to lose steam until the person figured out alternative means.

Pretty sure the 1800NewFunk track is just from the Flash project Margie did back in 89/90. Prince just held onto it for so long, still wish that project saw a full realization.
