When Eye Lay My Hands On U never worked live When i seen the reports of Prince playing When Eye Lay My Hands On U live i was happy cause i always though that song along with Jukebox With A Hearbeat and a few others was a good example of when that Emancipation NPS Rave style of production actually did work. It had kind of dreamy ,hypnotic Portis Head trip hop kind of vibe with great bridge and Santana refference. But live versions were a letdown for me.Too big, overblown,it sounded rushed, with melody lost. In my opinion it lost that vibe it had on the studio cut.

Did you hear his version in 2009 @ Montreux? I thought it was mesmerizing. One of his most erotic songs.

I remember being there for The Forum 21 Night Stand May 14th when he opened with that. It was not exactly the opening I was expecting.

The best version 2009 for sure. I hated the demo NPG site version (Always loved the song). 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

The Forum 21 Night Stand May 14th is my favourite as it seemed the passionate than the Montreux 2009 versions and missed out the bridge melody which I was never partial to (the bit beginning nobody knows like I knows)

It really was one of the coolest sounding recorded songs in the 2000s. It is so trippy, funky, and raw. I only have heard the Montreux version of his concert recordings that I recall, which I liked but no match for the studio version.

I am one of those who think most of the NPGMC stuff is weak and just filler but "when eye lay my hands on u" is probably my favorite song and the best song he recorded in that time period. Songs like vavoom, peace, high are weak..but that's for another thread...or IS IT? [Edited 11/28/20 22:35pm]

The studio version is absolutely fantastic. The Montreux 2009 version is excellent as well. If I had to keep only one version, it would be the studio version, though. I don't have to choose, fortunately.

Although I have witnessed the 2 Montreux versions live in person, go listen to the one from the Fabulous Forum, April 21st 2011, great building up until the final boombastic guitar solo...Hoep this shows up in soundboard one day...

For me, the live versions were amazing, the studio version, however was lacking and forgettable. 3121... Don't U Wanna Come?

The Montreux Show 2 performance is one of my favourite Prince performances. Had he recorded a studio version around that time with Lotusflower style production, it might have been one of his all time greats. Hundalasiliah!
