songs you would love, but one element ruins it for you

Are there songs that there's much you love about that, but there's one element that ruins it for you? Here are some examples of songs that would fall into this category for me:

Letitgo: I love how the chorus starts off but after he sings "Bang on the drum and lover so-and-so" there's a keyboard hook that I think it like nails on a chalk board. And what's worse, after he sings "But now I've got to let it go" he comes in with a backing vocal that sounds like a goat bleating: "Le-eh-eh-eh-eh-eht it go."

(There’ll Never B) Another Like Me: I like the grove and think the verses are funky, but the chorus, again, ruins if for me. Part of it is the fast-talk approach, but it's mostly the effects on his voice (reverb, echo?). If he just stang it straight without trying to sound like a choir it would be much better.

Sticking with MPLSound, Ol' Skool Company: I hate the spooky keyboard riff that underpins the entire song. Fortunately during the chorus the guitar drowns it out.

I could also list a bunch of songs from the late '80s/early '90s that I think are ruined by the cheesy production techniques that were in vogue at the time.

In other words, a song that you think to yourself: "I can't listen to that song as-is, but if I could make one minor edit, every so slightly remix/rearrange it, it would be a great song."

It could be a lyric too, not just an instrumental or production element. If there's one line I hate buried in a verse I can usually look past it (e.g. "Make you feel like your stuff ain't brown tonight" in Baby Knows). But if it's a line in the chorus that gets repeated and is central to the song, it's harder to overlook (e.g. "Making love is like surgery" in I Love U in Me).

Obviously there are a number of songs on Diamonds and Pearls and the Symbol Album that would be better without Tony M, but those are too easy to list and have been discussed to death.

Pop Life - Hate the part where it pauses for crowd noise.

Too many to list. Arms of Orion comes to mind. Great piece of music, awful lyrics.

Let's pretend we're married.

This is one of my favorites from 1999.

The song is going along great then Prince for only Prince reasons decided to take vulgar to a new level in the early 80's.

I know Prince wrote it etc... but I feel like he just torpedoed that song for no reason

I know he has others but off the top of my head that one I remember.

Obviously lurker316 got the "Baby Knows" lyric wrong...Prince is obviously referring to me when he says "...make you feel like you're Stephanie Brown tonight..." (I tend to use "obviously" too much...obviously)

"3123...that's next door to where the party be..."

That's one of the moments that made me a fan. For the life of me I actually couldn't believe someone said that in a pop song, on a single for that matter. That line shocked me in 2016. But a good shock, not a bad shot like some of the skits on those mid 90s hip hop skits.

Cosmic Day. The effect on the vocals drives me nuts.

Blanche. The hard left panning on the drums is distracting.

IIMYH. The flanger effect in the vocals drives me nuts. Better done on Pop Life, or at least it's less noticeable there.

The finger cymbals on We Can Fuck are distracting sometimes. Someone mentioned them here once and I can never unhear them.

Crucial. For some reason, both Prince and the Estate have denied us the full solo and I don't understand why. It does harm my enjoyment of the song.

That fucking cowbell. You know the one.

That one threw me off as well. Just looked it up on Princevault. "If It'll Makes You Happy" from 1999 SDE.

So many songs from the 90s. I strain to listen through all the dumb sound effects, the over production, and yeah, the hippity-hop rap breaks. If I had to pick one though, I would go with...

Dolphin. I love the beginning, the guitar solo, most of the lyrics, and the production. I hate "you can cut off all my fins but to your ways I will not swim". It's putrid, and reminds me of the poetry a 16 year old goth would write in 1995. It's also part of the chorus, so it's hard to ignore.

Those are songs I've edited. And believe me, they're 100% better without the wannabe rappers on 'em.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Well I'm not saying they aren't. WCF is probably my most listened to song since it's release, for ex.

These are just my pet peeves. I can't think of any prince songs I refuse to listen to except for The P.

This too, yes. If mother-memory recalls well, some commentators said Camille was back...this is no more Camille than I am.

songs I really don't like because fo theyr lame choruses;

The P

The Pope

The Jam Of The Year

Gett Off (Prince should've kept rosie and Tony off the chorus imho)

Get Your Groove On

Emancipation

+ some others i can't think off right now.

"Love 2 The 9's" ruined by the Tony M/Mayte rapping their corny exchange:

"Sex symbol to many, but I really got a beautiful mind"

"fine fine what sign U are?"

' How many books U read?"

"Dance girl lemme see that booty boom"

smh...gobbage
