If 1999 was only 1 LP

What would have been your tracklist?
To me, the album didn't deserve the 2 LPs treatment.
.
1999
Little Red Corvette
Let's Pretend Were Married
DMSR
Something in the Water
Free
Lady Cab Driver
.
With Lady Cab Driver as the third single

Yes, but they opted for Delirious instead of DMSR

Free is a great song, but I must confess this is badly produced. We don't feel the greatness of what it should have been. We just saw a glimpse of it.

Bingo. Let's whittle down Emancipation's bloated nature, or even Crystal Ball. But 1999? GTFO.

Because a double album of great Prince music doesn't serve your needs?

Weird.

I guess it would have sold even better as a single album. That's all you're really interested in, right?

This gives me a idea to make a 1 LP emancipation thread
Very curious as to what everyone's configurations would be

There have been hundreds of threads about Emancipation here.
My recent threads are a tribute to these very topics.
But it would be interesting to open another one.

In fact it would have sold less as one LP.
The 2 LP treatment gave him a larger exposure as an accomplished artist.
.
And this piece of crap of Delirious was a hit in the US... In the rest of the world nobody cared about 1999 until Purple Rain was released.
The b-side How Come You Don't Call Me was better than some unnecessary long tracks such as Automatic, Delirious ( the single version was already too long for me), International Lover...

Very interesting question, but that deserves a topic in itself.
I would have been fine with "only" 1 disc of 80 minutes, because I think that 45 tracks of sometimes average or clunker songs is too much for me to digest.
.
I still didn't digest the Vault CD3, only listenrd to it 4 times ( your brain needs at least 7 listenings to be able to judge objectively if you like it or not)

When I bought Emancipation I was like 15 and dug and loved listening to it repeatedly, even the average songs. It would have been a blasphemy to skip even the covers.
Now, I m 34 and I m not able to enjoy that anymore.
Moreover, I think most of the best tracks were on the 1998 Crystal Ball.

No - you're wrong. (Not to mention sarcasm impaired.)

exchange Delirious for DMSR and we have a perfect album IMO.

Nah, it's already a perfect configuration.

If you really wanted to condense the album, just whittle down the lengths of the longer-running tracks.

Here's an idea: Do a search on the site. That one's been done ad nauseum. I once had it whittled down to two disks, and it was great, although it had no title track.

That would certainly be an option as well, it would have made 1999 more concise album. Although personally I enjoyed most of the longer tracks on 1999.

That's really the best approach. Prince was having a Linn orgy on the album. Most of the single versions would suffice, and cutting down others to 7" versions would certain (probably?) help. An LP is what...45 minutes? Those would be pretty short songs to fit 11 songs onto a record. That's 4 minutes per song, at most, really. At least "Delirious" is already there.

But, doable. Why would any cut any song from that album?! Emancipation? Sure. But something like 1999 or SOTT to be whittled down... GTFO.

Yikes! Different strokes for different folks, I suppose. I absolutely LOVE "Delirious". And over the last decade, "Automatic" has become maybe my favorite track from the album.

.

But that's Prince Fandom for you! Everybody loves different stuff!
