what was princes greatest James Brown tribute?

sexy mf?

the work?

musicology?

Something else?

lyrically the work is probably the better of the three, but its also too slick and classy.

so i vote sexy mf.

but i hate the lyrics.

so i vote for a possibly non existent instrumental version.

musicology also sucks quite badly on record, as the lyrics are quite bad, but live, he really gets something funky out of it, much funkier than on the album.

have i missed any JB tributes?

im not including housequake as its obv JB influenced, but its not trying to sound like an old JB record.

Personally, i like a lot 'The Work', more i'm listening to this song, more i like it, it's in my personal top 20 of his songs now,

but i'm not sure this is a completely James Brown influenced song, the songs of James Brown, for what i know about them, are on a more hypnotic repetitive register, and are related a lot on the rhythms, rhythms which have a somewhat independance with the singing,

'The work' seems more complex melodically in its structure, and is more related to the melody in its composition,

however the comparison is real anyway, in the fact that there is in this song, like in the James Brown ones, strong elements of jazz and funk rhythms

Prettyman. Maceo's appearance doesn't even try and hide the fact it's a JB tribute

I wouldn't feel comfortable calling it his "greatest JB tribute," but Blanche is a great song JB would have done brilliantly. It's like Papa Don't Take No Mess on steroids. I love it.

I don't think this is his best, but another JB style song to add to the list:

"Make Yo Mamma Happy".

A couple other songs that are a bit JB-ish: "Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful" and "2.Y.2.D."

I was listening to G-Spot and the extended jam section at the end where Prince growls in a JB voice “Maceo blow your horn, don’t want no trash, gimme some popcorn”.
I always wonder did Prince ever get Maceo to add some sax when they worked together in the 2000s?!!!

He played Sex Machine live throughout the years.
He played Talking Loud and Saying Nothing on the Jam of the Year Tour.
And the way he danced, the way he used his microphone standard, the way he directed his band... His whole carreer was one big James Brown tribute.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

theres a diff between a 'tribute' and just showing the influence of someone (housequake)....

sexy mf, the work, musicology - all obviously songs where he is saying 'i am doing a JB style song here'

Why wasn't Prince invited onstage together with JB in 2003 on the BET Awards show? But MJ was?

Prince is not a show-off, he didn't need to do that.
MJ stole the show from JB, that wasn't a good thing IMO.
But yes, it would have been cool if Prince and MJ came on stage to award JB.
